Hi, I am hoping to pick some brains out there. When I first started genealogy, back in the Spring of 2000, the first birth certificate I got was my grandfather's. This is when I found out that his mother was (shock horror) unmarried. She did, however, put a father's name on his birth cert. I noticed at the time, but didn't really think anything of it, that both the father's name (Richard Ridge) and my grandfather's surname (Gillam) had lines drawn through them, as if they had been crossed out. I thought maybe it was marks on the paper. They also had numbers by them. Richard Ridge had a 19 by his name, and at first I thought it was his age. But I soon realised that was not the case, as my grandfather's name had 18 by it (I don't think he was 18 when he was born!). I didn't think any more about this until over the recent holiday. My brother came to visit and was looking at the certificate. He mentioned the lines, and when I pointed out the numbers, he suggested that they may refer to footnotes on the page. Yesterday I was looking at this again and noticed something else. After the last column on the right of the certificate, was what until now I had taken to be a signature. Obviously I had never even looked at it properly, as what it actually says is "eighteen, J.K.P(or T), and nineteen, J.K.P." The initials are the initials of the registrar. Does anyone know how I can find out what these numbers refer to. I got the copy of the cert. from the GRO. Would it be any different if I got one from West Derby, would it show any more detail? Hi All, The squiggle competition was where there would be an odd squiggley design put in a square, and to win, you had to draw something recognisable with the "squiggle" in the picture. It was still in the Liverpool Echo in the 1960s......I know - my dad was one of the winners once...and also was a runner-up on a few occasions! I actually came across the cutting of his winning squiggle picture only at the weekend. Happy memories.
