Hi Lorraine, My eldest son is in England nursing is there any way we can look at council records to see if we can pinpoint the time that they were registrated. I am 62 years of age and the only memory I have is of a Uncle Nick at the later end of World War 2.I have a complete family of Lacy's that I know nothing about. Thank you for your response. Best Wishes. Ron. ----- Original Message ----- From: <LORRAINELKEILAUS@aol.com> To: <BIRKENHEAD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 06, 2002 9:14 PM Subject: Re: [BKHD] New Subscriber. > Hi > I spoke to my brother who is a lot older than me and he said that they must > have moved very early on as he doesn't recvollect the name. Hi Listers, My name is Ron,I am trying to trace my family who came from Birkenhead. Grand-father Nicholas Lacy married to Mary Ellen O'Connor about 1903. I believe they had 5 children. Sylvestor. John. Ellen Mary. who was my Mother born 1912. Kath. Nick. Last known address 10 School Place Birkenhead. Love to hear from any-one,related to this family. I believe Nicholas Lacy worked in the shipyard there. Thank you. Ron McKeon. Queensland Australia..
My husbands family are Catholics, and I have found details of them at St Winefrid's RC Church Neston. They were living in Raby from about 1850. I cannot find a marriage in around 1850 for RICHARD CATON and ANN MAHER or RYAN, as it is not listed in the BMD Indexes, and was not at St Winefrid's. Also I am looking for the baptism of RICHARD CATON about 1820. As St Winefrid's was not around in 1820, would anyone have any suggestions as to where he might be baptised? I have looked at the Cheshire Parish Churches site and cannot find a Catholic Church listed at that time. Incidently, none of this family appear on Census records. I have been through the Wirral and Birkenhead CD roms page by page and they just are not there, despite having children baptised at Neston within a few days of the census. I would be very grateful for any suggestions. June Clough
LORRAINE Do you know if you can pay someone to look up records in the Town Hall if (like me) you are very far away?? Hi Jane No books specifically about that area that I know of but some of the general pictorial books of old Birkenhead might have a glimpse. I am sure one of them has a photo of St Anne's RC church. I think it still stands but has been de-consecrated and it's some kind of community centre now. That part of town had the poorest reputation in town both for the human poverty with the attendant social evils and for the very poor housing stock. My mum you to say, if I was naughty, that I was no better than one of those kids from Back St Anne Street (but she didn't mean it, of course!). Many of the streets and some original housing are still there so if you ever visit you can get an idea of what the place used to look like. Not sure when - probably blitzed by the Luftwaffe in WW2. It lay parallel between Brook Street and Price Street near where they meet Duke Street near Birkenhead Docks. You will find it on the highly recommended 1909 map of Birkenhead (Godfrey Edition, Cheshire Sheet 13.03). This was a strong Irish Catholic enclave and noted for unruliness. Nearest Catholic Church was St Anne's, now closed. Field Street a couple of blocks away (also on the 1909 Godfrey Map) but do not know if it survives.
