Hello All. In search for my corn porter. I would like to thank you all for your input. Carole, Brenda, Norman, Geoff, Neil and Ian.This has given me another step in learning as I never associated corn with grain ( wheat, barley etc.) I associated it with a wonderful sunday dinner. Mashed pototes, roast beef, yorkshire pudding, corn on the cob,cottage pudding. and yes we could have ( Cole ) Coal Porter in the back ground. All kidding aside, it was hard labor , the moving of heavy sacks of corn or grain. And they likely would not have had a wonderful meal like this to come home too. Again Thank You List. Hello Folks, I'm lost again, I am looking for what was a Corn Porter ? Perhaps a fellow who transported corn from point A to point B ? Am I way out in left field with this ? I have found Corn Chandler, Corn Cutter, Corn Factor, Corn Meter but no Corn Porter. Also was there a lot of corn grown, and was it mainly for the people to eat, or more for the cattle ? I am trying to find out what happened to My Grandfathers brothers and sisters. * ANN OWENS b 1881 Poulton - cum - Seacombe. lived in Birkenhead her child EDWARD OWENS b 1900. B-Head. JOHN OWENS b 1886 B-Head SARAH OWENS b 1894 B-Head. their parents were WILLIAM EYLES OWENS b B-Head abt 1858-61. and HANNAH MOLYNEUX.married 1879.Liverpool. I am wondering if they were "sent" abroad as they were orphaned at a young age. I cannot find Johns Birth 1886 but have Ann and Sarah's certificates. * ANN always referred to as ANNIE. Hi every one I am researching the name BATHGATE in Birkenhead. John and his wife Mary moved there in 1860 with their son John jnr. and then had Peter, Thomas, Charles and Mary. John and son John were map engravers. Thomas Bathgate was a Painter/Singer Sales Clerk Charles Bathgate was a Printer Compositor. Mary Bathgate a Dressmaker. Peter Bathgate a Printer Compositor. I have all the Census details for them and future families and I am now looking for any Directories they may be in. Does anyone have any Birkenhead Directories that cover 1870 - 1900?
