    2. Annabelle Sutton
    3. Hi all, i am very interested in schools as extra imformation on my ancestors.I recently tracked a school in my area ( Devon) through the census returns 1841-1891.and discovered a lot about the owners who also had a sister school 50 miles away run by other members of the same family. My local record office however have no records on it, presumably because it was a private school, they did however have the local church run school records.Birkenhead may of course be different, and i would also be interested to know if ,or what records exist. annabelle@sutton86.fsnet.co.uk

    2. Jo Anne Gaddy
    3. Greetings from Northern California My name is Jo Anne and I have just discovered this list. My maternal Grandfather, Walter GALLOWAY, was born in Birkenhead in 1886. According to some notes I have, Walter's Grandfather, George GALLOWAY was the Headmaster of St. Andrew's Presbyterian School until 1878 when he established Ashford House School in partnership with John BRUCE M.A. In 1881 the partnership was dissolved and George established Clifton Park School. Could someone advise me how to go about confirming and adding to this information? Were school records kept and where would they be now? I've found George and most of the family on the 1881 CD's at 18 Falcon Grove, Birkenhead. Would their residence be the school? They had two young boys, listed as scholars, boarding with them. Any help would be appreciated. In case anyone is interested a brief outline of my family is listed below my signature. 2. Webb/Davies Research
    3. List , After a 9 month wait, I was finally able to look at the film of “Burials in consecrated ground, 1864-1883” for Flaybrick cemetery. The following entries are the brother and daughter respectively of my great grandfather Thomas Ramsbottom: No. 916 8782 # In Order Book 925 7 Buried 26 Feb 1866 7 Feb 1882 Name Henry Ramsbottom Elizabeth A.Ramsbottom Age 7 4 Months Mode of Burial Public Grave Public Grave Section 8 8 Grave # 187 473 Is there anyone familiar with the records for this cemetery that could answer a few questions: What is the definition of a public grave? Do families own the plot or are people that are buried in public graves just put in the next available grave? Is any of the information from the two records above sufficient to lead me to the rest of the family’s graves? 1. [BKHD] Smethwicks Safest Milk
    2. John Farrall
    3. Hello Listers, This is a historical question. I am researching information on a cousin - George FARRALL - who was born in Pennsylvania, USA in 1911, but raised by his family relatives both in Crewe and Oxton. I have a photograph of young George, dated 1925, standing beside a milk wagon. Also in the photograph are seven other staff members with their horse and wagons and all in front of a brick building bearing a road sign reading "SYCAMORE ROAD". The wagon beside young George reads: "Smethwick's Safest Milk" on the front and "Bray & Bailey, Sycamore Road" on the side. Does anyone have a clue where Sycamore Road may be located? Is there any historical information on Smethwick's Safest Milk? I would appreciate any information you might have. Thanks and regards. John Farrall Burke, Virginia USA

    1. [BKHD] White Paper
    2. Dr John Edward Cordwell
    3. I hope this from Gloucestershire's County Archivist may be of use. John Cordwell From: "KINGSLEY, Nick" <nkingsle@gloscc.gov.uk> The registration service White Paper is the product of a very long debate within Government, which has included consultation with a number of archival bodies. It includes a number of measures (such as the proposed transfer of original registration records to local record offices) which the profession widely welcomes. Having said that, the completed document is clearly not as well thought-through as I would have expected, and there are specific concerns about the impact it might have on the research resources of the genealogical community. I am addressing this on a number of levels. In my capacity as Chairman of the National Council on Archives, I sit on the Government's Interdepartmental Committee on Archives. I raised my concerns at the most recent meeting, and have secured a meeting between the relevant Deputy Registrar General and the Association of Chief Archivists in Local Government at which ways round the problems we have identified will be sought. The Public Record Office is also pushing for some changes to the proposals, including a clear commitment to designate the Registrar General's records as Public Records, which would provide a number of safeguards. If the Federation of Family History Societies or other family history bodies have points which they wish to ensure are raised, these can be sent to Jonathan Pepler, the County Archivist of Cheshire <PEPLERJ@cheshire.gov.uk>, who leads on Registration matters for the Association. The National Council on Archives will also be making a formal response to the White Paper, and any views from family history bodies can be copied to me for inclusion in this. Nick Kingsley
