    2. Hello Listers - I had written asking if anyone had a book about English names similar to Seary`s in Nfld I guess its one of those that got lost. I have looked for some English names in Seary`s , Howards and Crosbies,in Nfld but am interested in the name of GLAZEBROOK and GOAT neither of which were in any of their books. 3. Hello List , Can anyone.. tell me anything about the ROYAL ROCK HOTEL ?.. 3. I'm afraid I have to disagree with John's comment that public graves are a polite way of describing pauper's graves. During my researches, I have many ancestors buried in public graves....in Liverpool....and on checking the order books, I've found that some money was paid towards the burials as a contribution...therefore the balance was paid by whoever - church, local council etc. Everton Cemetery for instance has the private and public graves, and just recently I discovered that they also have a section for pauper burials. It's possible that other cemeteries have sections which cover the paupers, but you have to ask at the record office or the cemetery concerned. 2. Dear John, Sycamore Road still exists. It is not located in the main town area of Birkenhead. It is located in a residential area known as Tranmere. For you info the following is directions for getting there. From Derby Road (a main road with side roads leading to Borough Road another main road). From Derby Road turn into Milton Road, halfway down turn right into Sycamore Road. Sycamore runs parallel with Derby Road and Borough Road. Hope this helps you. Dorothy McCrary

    3. Hi Leigh, I do not know whether there is a connection to this family or not, but I have a family also in 1881 living at 1 Birkenhead Cliffs (which I cannot find on a map) and they are:- Ellen Evans, widow 51 born Barnhill, Cheshire Henry Evans, son 22 labourer born Chester John Evans, son 20 born Macclesfield Rachel Evans, dau 18 born Denbigh. I think that the deseased husband could have been William Evans, gent whi is mentioned on his sone Henry's marriage cert in 1894. not being able to find Henry's birth record, I cannot at the moment, marry up the father with the mother! If you go back to 1851 for example and come across a William and Ellen, I would be most greatful. They obviously lived at Denbigh in abt 1863 when Rachel weas born - maybe I should just buy her birth cert and done with it! regards Juliet Evans ----- Original Message ----- From: <YeagerLA@aol.com> To: <BIRKENHEAD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 24, 2002 10:05 PM Subject: [BKHD] Mary Ann JONES and John EVANS, Borough Road, Birkenhead > Hi > > I am new to the list so thought I'd start by posting my interests. > > In 1881 my ancestors were living at 352 Borough Rd Birkenhead, Cheshire > > John EVANS M 52 M Wrexham, Denbigh, Wales > Rel: Head > Occ: Gardener (Dom) > Mary A. 3. I am been lurking for a few weeks and now would like to post my interests in the region. We visited there in 1995, so understand the landscape a little. MANIFOLD and MEAKIN of the county - Bromborough are relevant to Elizabeth Landy and myself. My direct links are to BOSTOCK - BLEASE - WILKINSON - BARKER - BETTS. The web pages below explain. Robert Bostock (1743 - 1793) R.N. was a shipowner (dare I say) slave trader (1779-1793), in the years when all industry, government and civillians wanted it continued for the prosperity of industry, business and dare I say, church buildings. Although the Bostock family are native to Cheshire, they lived in Liverpool in the latter part up to 1846 when my last Bostock name is found. Addresses - Union Street, Bootle and Hope Street, Liverpool. Charles Bostock R.N. and family lived at 30 Marine Crescent, Waterloo and died at Fareham, Hants. However, the Birkenhead light was important to the shipping on the Mersey, with Bostock's flag number 43. I have a 'Sadler' mug c.1778 which depicts the Birkenhead Light and relevant flags.. My maternal Grandfather, Walter GALLOWAY, was born in Birkenhead in 1886. According to some notes I have, Walter's Grandfather, George GALLOWAY was the Headmaster of St. Andrew's Presbyterian School until 1878 when he established Ashford House School in partnership with John BRUCE M.A. In 1881 the partnership was dissolved and George established Clifton Park School. Could someone advise me how to go about confirming and adding to this information? Were school records kept and where would they be now? I've found George and most of the family on the 1881 CD's at 18 Falcon Grove, Birkenhead. Would their residence be the school? They had two young boys, listed as scholars, boarding with them. Any help would be appreciated. In case anyone is interested a brief outline of my family is listed below my signature. 3. Hello Tom, Public Graves are a polite way of describing "pauper's graves", in Flaybrick they usually hold about 25 people, occasionally there is a plaque on the wall to commemorate a person who is buried there ,but not many. I have several ancestors buried in them, but no plaques. Flaybrick is on the side of a rocky hill so there are rock walls dotted about, the public graves seemed to be put against a rock face, unfortunately I don't think that would help you find any other graves. regards John Oliver (Upton, Wirral UK) ----- Original Message ----- From: Webb/Davies Research <gospeloak@hotmail.com> To: <BIRKENHEAD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 23, 2002 6:42 PM Subject: [BKHD] Flaybrick Cemetery Records List , After a 9 month wait, I was finally able to look at the film of "Burials in consecrated ground, 1864-1883" for Flaybrick cemetery. The following entries are the brother and daughter respectively of my great grandfather Thomas Ramsbottom: No. 916 8782 # In Order Book 925 7 Buried 26 Feb 1866 7 Feb 1882 Name Henry Ramsbottom Elizabeth A.Ramsbottom Age 7 4 Months Mode of Burial Public Grave Public Grave Section 8 8 Grave # 187 473 Is there anyone familiar with the records for this cemetery that could answer a few questions: What is the definition of a public grave? Do families own the plot or are people that are buried in public graves just put in the next available grave? Is any of the information from the two records above sufficient to lead me to the rest of the family's graves? 3. I've responded privately but thanks once again to all those who replied to my query about school records. All very helpful. George Galloway was apparently very active in the Church as well as educational life and is supposed to have been President of both the Liverpool and the Birkenhead Teacher's Associations at various times. The advice given may help me there as well. I realized I have some additional information which may help locate the last school he established. My notes say that in 1904 Clifton Park School was amalgamated with the nearby Birkenhead Institute and that Clifton Park was used to house the Junior School. Does this Institute still exist and would anyone know where this Junior School is/was located? Thank you, Jo Anne Gaddy, California jogaddy@saber.net

    3. Hello Annabelle, School records are usually held at local record offices or sometimes at the schools themselves. The Wirral Archives have a leaflet listing all the school records they hold. Most are for Birkenhead schools but others named are in Wallasey, Heswall, Tranmere etc. Other records administered by Cheshire County Council before 1974 are likely to have been deposited at Cheshire Record Office; the majority of these are from Church of England schools. The Archive phone no. in Birkenhead is 0151 647 39965 and their address is: Wirral Museum, Birkenhead town Hall, Hamilton Square, Birkenhead CH41 5BR The school I am particularly interested in is the old school at Hr. Bebington but these appear to have gone missing. If anyone has any idea where they are I shall be glad to hear from them.
