hELLO ALL LISTERS - Woud there be SKS who would be willing to do a lookup of the 1901 census for the above address and let me know who was living at that address. I had asked someone in particular to go and do a lookup for me but they have been unable due to extra work requirements each weekend. I would appreciate just this one address being looked up and the others can wait. Thanks in advance Joyce
Hello Joan - I only just found out the street name when a cousin looked up her mothers birth certificate and told me where her parents lived in 1891 when she was born. I know also that the family moved from Birkenhead about 1902. So they were not there very long and your relative probably moved in after my g`parents moved out. GOOD HUNTING JOYCE
How do I access the Cheshire BMD site. I am a novice beginner, er sort of. Dave Downunder
It's a long shot , but it's worth a try ! I am trying to find any information on my uncle: STEPHEN SNOWDON CLARKE SMITH , that's the name he used when he joined the Army in WW1. He was bap' Snowdon Stephen Clarke Smith , Dob 14 - 9 - 1886 in Southampton , where he spent some of his life. Has a older child he lived in Jersey, C.I. His link with the Birkenhead area, is it is where he enlisted in the Royal Welch Fusiliers , Service No. 4995 [ 291894 ]. He may have been in the Cheshire Regiment before the R.W.F . He was killed in action on 26 - 3 - 1917 in Palestine. Did he live in Merseyside, have a wife , children ? Is there anyone or family that use the name Clarke as a middle name in front of Smith ? Here's hoping. Thanks in advance. Nigel Clarke Smith.
Hi Joyce and anyone else who might be able to help, I noted an address in your recent e-mail; the same one that I have been left as a "clue" in my genealogy search. I have an old letter which gives the name of a relative. Letter was written between 1891 and 1926. Mrs. E. Powell 67 Daker (sic) St. Birkenhead, Cheshire, England. I do not know exactly how she is related to a Charles Arthur Winter, possibly his mother who had remarried. Would really like to find out more about her. Joan Winters in Randolph, Massachusetts, USA
When you send for certificates, be sure to put in your phone number. The Birkenhead registrar phoned me after I sent for two marriage certificates for my great-grandfather. She thought I had made a mistake as the two wives had the same surname. In fact my ggfather married two sisters. ... Elizabeth Atherton
Hi All I am new to this list and am researching the following names, the first two queries are the ones I am stuck on. The other are just in case someone else is researching the same names. I do have more information if anyone is interested. Nathaniel CRAZE married Harriet HANNAFORD around 1893 They could have married in Liverpool, but one of their children Edith Craze was born February 17, 1894 at 6 Alma Street, Birkenhead. I am really stuck on this one! They probably also had a Nathaniel Craze born 1893. I have probably found Harriet's family on the IGI in Liverpool. but am particularly stuck on where Nathaniel came from. I would love to find this family on the 1891 census Margaret Anne FENTON was born at 2 Club Row, Birkenhead on November 4, 1888 Parents John Thomas Fenton and Annie Cochrane (unsure of spelling). Stuck on this one too! I would really like to find this family on the 1891 census. Edith CRAZE married an ADAM BUTTERWORTH before 1913 in Birkenhead Adam BUTTERWORTH married Winifred THARME October 8, 1939 at Holy Trinity, Birkenhead. George THARME married Margaret Anne FENTON at the Parish Church, Birkenhead on November 4th 1916 George THARME was born at 11 Queen St, Birkenhead on September 13, 1878 George THARM's parents were John Tharme and Suzannah McCartin they were married in Liverpool in 1862. John Tharme appears to have been christened in Liverpool, but I haven't been able to find his birth certificate yet. Suzannah McCartin came from Ïreland, her parent's names were Hugh McCartin and Susan ? Emily Owens born 1882. Father William Alexander Emmanuel Owens Cheers Debbie Hong Kong

Hi Joan, I would also be interested in finding out if the banns book or register for Holy Trinity Church in Birkenhead have survived too. Any info please, let's know. tom
Joyce, you say you would like a Blank copy. try this : when you are on the cheshire B.M.D.site, click on the ref number last column on right, get a print out of A certificate.Like you did when you downloaded a copy before. erase with correction fluid the stuff you do not need, and fill in the information that you DO have. registrars although very helpful will NOT do lookups they have to deal first with todays B.M.and D's. you MUST always send the fee with the request or you will not hear back. your fee will either pay for the certificate or it will be returned with a letter telling you why. hope this helps. regards Barbara NORTHWICH. ----- Original Message ----- From: <CRETEYET@aol.com> To: <BIRKENHEAD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 16, 2002 11:52 PM Subject: [BKHD] birth certificates - GLAZEBROOKS > Hello Listers - I . Hello Joice, i have an interest in schools and believe it is well worth trying to track down the records. if they do not this is the next best thing. . I tracked a school in Devon through the census returns, mainly because it contained many children born in India. No records exist for the school presumably because it was a privately run familly affair, having said that, i was able to get a general picture of it.The school was familly run and had a parent school in Exeter ,also run by familly members. It was fairly new in 1841and had grown rapidly by 1851. By 1861only two children from India remained,(oviously an effect of the 1857 Indian Mutiny.)although they had managed to take in more local children.By 1871 things were picking up.Somewhere between 81/91it started to decline and in 1901 no longer existed. living in the area i am able to add to this information.I recently did this for someone who had a decendant who attended the school. In the absence of records its the best we can hope for. Another School.,though not in this area,Kensington Proprietry School, did have records, and my brother managed to track them down.although i should add only for the earlier years, the later ones went missing. We were lucky and managed to get the records for two of our decendants.1836-1852. I am trying to find out now, about small schools befor the census began.Anyone got any ideas.?Looking for Macleods. If this reply to the list spreads out, will someone please tell me why.? It drives me nuts. annabelle from Devon.

Hello Listers: I have the following people showing at 1 Booth St. Tranmere in 1881 census, and probably 67 Dacre St. in 1891. Rebecca Glazebrook age 33 James G Glazebrook age 14 Sarah G Glazebrook age 13 William H. Glazebrook age 10 Sarah Cubbins age 68 Would it be possible to rule out the fact that they were or were not at the same address in 1871 I am finding birth records but reference numbers are not all clear. If some of these people are found together, it is possible some additional information may show up along with one or more names. I was at our local LDS office today and they have a few records for 1851 but nothing for 1861 or 1871. I realise it is quite possible that in 10 years they may have moved and I understand if they are not found there, in any case I would appreciate any effort made, TIA Joyce
Hello List, Today is another one of those days were " I am so far behind, I think I am in front" Thank you all for the wonderful responce which I have received on explaning " Poulton cum Seacombe " Ruth, Frederick, Pam, Gordon, John, Barbara, Lyn . I hope I haven't forgotten anyone. Some have helped me before.I find it hard to put my appreciation into words but I am truely grateful for all the help I receive. When you folks come back with an explanation for me it really makes me feel close to my roots. And understanding were my people lived. Many thanks again everyone. Hi John , I just spoke to my mothers cousin and he was able to tell me at least 2 of the carter boys went to Australia one we know was Joseph the other he thinks was Edward he Knows that they were both older then my Grt. Grandpa and that the Carter farm was right on the edge of Whales . ? this family in the Census does look like it would be my family but as I went through the names 3 of my Carter boys are missing William , Samuel, and Joseph Carter who may be the one you found. What scares me a bit is that I was talking to a lady who had tracked her English ancestors back and had worked on it for 10 years to discover she had been tracking the wrong family all along . I want so badly to run with this but I am afraid to with 3 missing boys I just wish there were some possible way to get some facts that I could depend on to get the ball rolling : ( AnitaGet more from the Web. Hello Listers - Yes I agree with Caryl- I would have liked to see the response regarding experience researching schools I might be interested in different areas, but someones experience in one area might be of help to someone else who perhaps hadn`t thought of such enquiries. Joyce
Poulton cum Seacombe is th "correct" modern spelling, but I have also seen it Poolton (after all, the name comes from the "Pool" ie Wallasey Pool, the inlet from the Mersey that separates Wallasey from Birkenhead). "cum" is a Latin term meaning "with" - there are two areas of Wallasey: Poulton and Seacombe. I suppose they were once hamlets, then combined as a township, for administrative purposes. ( the other two areas of Wallasey were Wallasey and Liscard). I'm not sure when Wallasey split up into these three area/parishes/townships - St John's Liscard and St Paul's Seacombe are both early 19th century, I think, but I'm fairly certian that the townships existed efore they became parishes in their own right. Ruth Wilson Wallasey > I would also like to ask here I have seen many times Poulton cum Seacombe. > But what I have here is definitely Poolton was there both ?? Or is this a > misprint ? > Also can you explane what cum means ? I though it was a large building > houseing many familys.
