Hi Monica, I don't know of a Westbank in Prenton, but a bit further along is a Westbank in what is now called Devonshire Park (I knew this as Tranmere, but perhaps it wasn't). Hi Monica it depends what you mean by middle class the area is a suburb of Birkenhead a working class town across the Mersy from Liverpool which suffered a decline on the closure of the shipyards of Camel Laird but I think it is looking up with the advent of CAPITOL OF CULTURE in 2008 for Liverpool houses in Westbank Rd were built around the turn of the centuty very modern for the time with gardens back and front large three story with inside bathroom and toilet a lot of them have been converted into flats fairly good amenities I think most of the district was built by a Welsh Methodist Westbank Greenbank willowbank rockybankand heathbankRds all borderd by Borough rd south rd and north rd I lived ther in the 60,s cheers George Fraser & Monica Taylor <[email protected]> wrote:I have an ancestor who died at 72 Westbank Road, Prenton about 1944. hi Pat and Bill and Helen there was a change in the law about this at some point, although not sure when or what the details were. I think there was another change just after the ww1, to do with secondary education. Dear Helen. It was a tavern which was converted from the old farmhouse and Mill, I know it was at Irby, I will have to ask my sister who lives at Upton, her husband always took us there on a Wednesday night so that he could have his glasses of beer, and she would have 2 whiskys. It was a ritual, they did it every Wednesday night., I was staying with them for a while. My sister is Joan and her husband was Hugh. Graham. Cheers. I like to see a nice mix of genealogy and social history, reminiscences included! Slightly off list, my apologies but I am trying to locate Raymond Holmes who lived in the Birkenhead area during the 1970's. He had a brother Ted (Edward) who I believe died a few years ago and 4 or 5 children, one of them was named Chris. If you recognise this family or you belong to the family please contact me off list. Cheers SH
My g g g g grandfather,William Cox, was identified as a Boatman in the 1851 Census for Birkenhead. I realize that he may have been employed on the River,Ferry or perhaps, less likely, an ocean going ship. I would appreciate opinions as to his most likely vocation? Ray.Jones,Ontario
I have an ancestor who died at 72 Westbank Road, Prenton about 1944. Can anyone tell me what kind of neighbourhood this would have been in prewar days? Was in middleclass, poor, upper class? Was this area bombed during the war? Dear Gordon. Well you have done your homework, Good on you. In my wanderings, looking for connections, I have come to the conclusion that our origins came from Irby, because the Mill (which is now a public house) seems to be the place where they have been living at one time. (I have actually had a sherry in what would have been the kitchen ) I did not know at the time the significance . I am so grateful for any snippit of information, My grandma Youds as we call Catherine who married John Wilkinson the younger, was a Quaker she was born in Bidston, but John Wilkinson was born in Warrington, his father was Joseph, but I don't think Joseph was from Warrington. Catherine and John had 10 children, 9 were sons, many were killed in the 1st world war, I never met them, but I did meet Jack and Jo, so they must have had children, you are spread all over the Wirral, one would be a butcher, some went to sea, my grandfather followed in the footsteps of his father, he was a boilermaker. John Wilkinson played the violin, and played for local hops, and I suspect was in the orchestra for the operas. Anyway, thanks for communicating , perhaps we will eventually find connections, it is good, I think I have sparked a flood of info for others on the list. That much be good. Dear Ross. Thank you for the transcription, itis very helpful and undeniable don't you think ? Would you know if the shop happens to have been a butchers shop? or was it a bakery ? Would you have any idea what houses mentioned in the will consisted of ? Because I went into the house which had been a farm and at one time an inn, it was for sale about 8 years ago, I was visiting England, I live in New Zealand. It was on the corner of School Lane opposite St Oswald Church. There is so much history in Bidston , that I am hungry for more . Thank you so much. Regards, Barbara. Dear Barbara, Yes I remember contacting you, I read your mail quite often, I have placed my list in the hope of finding new contacts, my dwerryhouse is my grandmother she was Harriet Dwerryhouse, she married Samuel Wilkinson in Birkenhead I think in 1899, my gt grandfather was John Dwerryhouse who was a baker, he married Eliza Jane Peacock in 1873, at St nicholas, December 25th, my Dwerryhouse line go back to Alice Kenyon whose father was John, she married John Dwerryhouse in 1789. I think that Alice may have been born in Yorkshire, I have a note of an Alice born to a Jonas Kenyon in 1760 in ? Yorkshire. Maybe thats who it was ? My understanding is that a union school was the local school; not a church school, although religion was taught. The education Act of 1880 made it compulsory for all children aged between 5-10 yrs. Children aged between 10-13 yrs had to stay on unless they passed the satisfactory standard. So it seems strange that your ancestor was still at school at the age of 14 yrs, unless he was a pupil teacher, but then it would state that on the census. A Google search for Birkenhead Union School should bring you information about the school itself. There may even be school records at the central library. Dear Gordon. My Kenyon is John, in 1789 his daughter Alice married John Dwerryhouse, at Childwall, Stanley Youds married Mary Chatterton, they had my gt grandmother Catherine Youds who married John Wilkinson, Catherine was born in Bidston in 1833, married John in 1858, their son my grandfather was Samuel Wilkinson born 1876 in Birkenhead married my grandmother Harriet Dwerryhouse in I think 1899, my mother Harriet Wilkinson married Thomas Jackson Smith at St Anne , Stanley, Liverpool in April 1931, I was born in 1933. that is my grandfathers line, my grandmother Harriets mother was Eliza Jane Peacock, she married John Dwerryhouse in 1873 December , at St Nicholas, Liverpool landing stage. her father was William Peacock and I think not proven yet, that William may have married Catherine Coghlan 1848 at Cork, Ireland. Povall and Barlow are intermarried with the Youds and Wilkinson. I know that are but cannot at this stage find the dates, Barlow was Catherine Youds (Wilkinson) sister in law who lived with her for a time in Birkenhead. Catherine Wilkinson new Youds had a brother 2 years younger than her named Thomas. The Youds lived at Bidston, and I am told that we are related to Robert Youds who had the flour Mill on Bidston Hill. Any connections that you can see ? Cheers, Barbara <New Zealand.Oh! I forgot Wharton, I think he was Thomas, his daughter married William Youds in 1700s. Somewhere there is a connection with the Royal family, not sure who, but it was all hushed up and we were told as children we were not allowed to tell anyone, as Queen Victoria was a cousin Cheers.
