    3. Hello Margaret, Sorry but none of the names you mention sound familiar to me, have you any thing more about James Austin ? All mine came from Liverpool and London originally and my Fathers family lived at Upton Wirral and I grew up at Rock Ferry. Can you tell me where James was born and who his parents were, then I can look through my lot to see if I can find any connection. 3. Hi John, Elizabeth Farrell born 1880, Oxton is my grandmother. (Actually her birth date is 29 March, 1879.) Now I have questions! Shall we do this off list? Or risk boring everyone? For starters: from who are you descended?? And when did they emigrate to the U.S.? 2. Hi Helen No you are getting confused with the Anchor Inn in Irby, which is at the T junction of Irby Road and Thingwall Road. The Irby Mill is on Mill Lane going towards Greasby and is at the junction of Hill Bark Road (leads to Royden Park) and Mill Lane itself. I live within two miles of it. Terry

    3. Hi All, Make that 3 happy people, for SPARK is my interest as well. (I hope David will keep me posted.) I am also interested in the FAIRCLOUGH surname. My ggrandfather Henry Fairclough moved from Kirkham, Lancashire to Birkenhead in the mid 1800's. He was a Miller & Master Baker and also member of the Masonic Order. Henry's mother was a Singleton & I wonder if there might be some connection with the Singleton that I have seen mentioned as a flour dealer in Birkenhead as well. 3. Hi John, It's definitely not the Harvest Mouse. That's right at the other end of Irby Road, on the junction of Pensby Road and Whitfield Lane. One of my old haunts, but much more often at the Black Horse in Lower Heswall. I lived opposite the Boys' school, then moved along Irby Road just a couple of hundred meters from the Harvest Mouse. The Anchor was near to Irby Hall, then the Labour Club (?) was just up along Thingwall Road I think just passed the row of shops. Then I seem to remember a white building on the corner of Irby Road and Thingwall Road opposite Irby Hall. Irby Hall used to have the old war planes round the back, and the cows in the field at the side. Then on the opposite side of Irby and Thingwall Roads was the library. Perhaps the drink has affected my memory!! You'll have to check it out for me! The bakery I am thinking about was on the corner of Glover St/Borough Rd in the 40's to 60's - opposite the bottom of Victoria Rd ( can Ricci1934 con firm?) This could have been about the right place for No 434. I thought it might have been Lunt's then but memory does play tricks! Dave --------------------------------- ALL-NEW Yahoo! I lived at 4 Rocky Bank Road from 1959 until 1961. The address was then Devonshire Park, Prenton, Birkenhead. Before the War it would have been firmly middle - to upper- class housing. Cotton Brokers, Ship's Mastewrs, Shop-owners and the like. (Must have gone down a peg or two when we moved in !) As far as I know it did not suffer any bombing in the Blitz. The housing was mostly large Victorian or Edwardian houses - two stories plus attis bedrooms for the domestic staff. Very nice now actually - quite pricy I should imagine. 3. By the turn of the century the school leaving age had risen to 11 years old. Then there was the Fisher Act 1918 which raised the leaving age to 14 years. The changes after WW2 would have been the Butler Acts. Leaving age was raised again, to 15 years, and at the age of 11 years pupils went on to a secondary school rather than stay at the same school throughout the education. I think this was also the time of the nit nurse, the school dentist, and free school milk. It's been a long time since I had to write about these social changes, so don't quote me on anything!!
