    3. This is far out but as I know it, so I pass it on to you for your reference. I have in my house a pocket watch and photograph of a Gentleman known only to me as Mr Cox. He was a sea captain and lived in a very large house in Bedford Road Rock Ferry Birkenhead. This house became a Baptist Church with a hall built on for the worshipping area pre WWII. The house part was demolish in the late 1960's or early 1970's and new houses now stand there but the hall was taken over as a workshop/warehouse and although re-clad with new roof and sides still stands to-day. Capt. Cox was looked up to by my father, who I suspect ran errands for him and he influenced my dad to join the Royal Navy at the age of 14 years he was still employed as a civilian employee when he died in 1973. My dad was born in 1911, so the seagoing member of the Cox family you seek may just be the old man my dad befriended. Sorry if I have rambled on. This is because it is through this line that there is a mitochondrial mutation and I am interested in finding out the incidence of the symptoms in other descendants. I know that MARY OXTON appears to have died as a result of this mutation. I would love to know who her mother was, so any experts on the OXTON family who can help - would love to hear from you. 3. In a recent post, Elisabeth Wegener indicated interest in the following families: >DIXON >LEAY >OXTON >WALTON >COUPLAND >GRIFFITH >CLEMENTS >ROBERTS >EASTMAN >BRADBURY Elisabeth, may I ask about your EASTMAN connection? My greatgrandfather, Josiah EASTMAN (b 1822 in Portsea, Hampshire) managed a Cocoa Rooms establishment in Chester St, Birkenhead -- this from the 1881 census. His wife Susannah (nee BASSETT, m 1844 in Stepney, London) was dead by this date. Cocoa Rooms were part of an extensive temperance movement of the time. His daughter, Sarah Louisa EASTMAN (b 1848, Islington, London) married my greatgrandfather, Thomas BURTON, in 1869 in Liverpool. Josiah also had a daughter, Esther Ann, who was 17 in 1881 and living with her father. Another EASTMAN, William (b1852, London, and probably Josiah's son) also operated a Cocoa Rooms on Price St, Birkenhead. William's wife was named Hannah and, in 1881, they had one daughter named Louisa. Any connection possible? Dave Burton

    3. Stan Sorry for the delay in replying My CARTER family came to Liverpool and then Wallasey after 1901 but before 1917, I don't know exactly when. They lived in Aigburth for a while and moved to the Wirral. My family Grandfather worked for Carters seeds but I haven't found a connection other than a common surname. My Uncles (all born 1908 or earlier) were nearly all Cunard or White Star Seafarers of various ranks, but I believe my Uncle who drove for the CO-OP was the driver of the first vehicle through the Mersey Tunnel ( the old bendy one) but I have no proof or evidence of that. I have numerous cousins on the Wirral and in Australia and Canada. I don't think we have any common ground yet. By the way I was born in Tranmere. 3. Helen I have early memories of the old lady (Mrs McCardle I think) yelling at the lorry drivers as they warmed up their lorries on a cold winters morning " I'll get the west Cheshire council onto you, Roebuck !!" Poor old dear they drove her to distraction. The quarry was quite deep but had an access off quarry road, but it must be quite something to build there. Mrs Millie was a dear old soul always ready to give me sweets when I was a boy and she sold me CHEWING GUM (which I wasn't allowed by dad !!) Also in our row of shops the Barbers (Seth Foster) The Greengrocers Mr ? (cant remember) The Chemist Mr Tunley The Newsagent Mr Stockdale The Electric Shop Mr Jones The Grocers Mr ? The Butchers The Chip Shop Charlie Firth The Pet Shop The Wool shop The Dairy (health food shop later which was a joke cause the guy that ran it looked so poorly) The carpenter Mr Ball And more I have probably forgotten Happy Days Alan Alan Sutton www.ownersinportugal.com -----Original Message----- From: Lavendersblue [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 18 October 2004 20:18 To: Alan Sutton Subject: Re: [BKHD-Wirral] Roll Call. WHARTON,YOUDS,CHATTERTON,WILKINSON,SMITH,DWERRYH... Fancy that! Yes, I remember your mum and dad's wine shop - not that I went in of course! I was always in Millie's sweet shop near the end of the block. You won't remember the time when the a car ended up in The Pantry; I made a good profit that day, when I bet everyone that there was a car in the pantry! Well there was! I think my mum threw a party the day Roebucks was finally flattened. We lived on Irby road, at the junction of Quarry Road East, a beautiful walk, especially after the snow had fallen. I believe the old quarry was built on several years ago. I can't imagine how they did that! I think it was 1984 when I moved over to Birkenhead - my independence!
