Claughton Higher Grade School was extensively damage in the Air Raid 12 / 13 March 1941. Brattan Road was razed to the ground. The school re-opened in the early 1950's and is known today as Christchurch C of E Primary. These are the names that I am researching. MARSH=I am led to believe that my grand-father James Aaron MARSH was b;in Birkenhead c1874,so far havent found his birth. MORGAN=B;Ireland c1854.=Steward on a Ship.Family lived West Derby Area. McCABE=B;Ireland c1816=Smith.Family lived Toxteth Park. OWENS=B'Bangor Wales c1842=Shoemaker.Family lived Everton. McCULLOCH=B;Lpool c1838.=Tailor.Family lived Everton. These families could have moved since the 1881 Census and as my brother use to go on abit about Birkenhead[though he was born in NZ]I feel there must be something in it. Elsie Mcleod. New Zealand.
I am just completing a family history and note that I do not have the death dates of 3 important ancestors, all who died after 1901. Since I just want a date, not other information, is there an obvious way to find out online. All three probably died in Birkenhead --2 of them before WWI and the other well after. Fred Waring
William Billington I am trying to find information about William Billington who married Alice C Le Broc in St Michaels in the City Liverpool in 1914. In 1927 they were living at 125 Old Bidston Road Wirral. Alice Le Broc was my Grandfathers sister. Any information would be appreciated especially from descendents of Alice and William, Thanking you in advance. Tony.

Could anyone tell me any more about Claughton Higher Grade School? My grandmother attended this school in the late 1800's. I was under the impression that it was a girls' school, was it? As the town of Birkenhead grew, it became necessary to establish it as a separate union from the Wirral Union in 1861(?). When the Poor Law changed in 1834 (I think) it was necessary for Parishes to look after their own poor and needy, paid for out of Parish Rates. As the Poor Laws changed over the course of the nineteenth century, the poor and destitute could only receive assistance by entering the workhouse (there were some parishes who resisted these changes for as long as they could and continued outdoor relief, but this couldn't last forever). As the demand for more places in the workhouses grew, the poorer parishes could not keep up with the increase in spending (larger workhouses, more staff etc). There were some horrendous incidents reported by the few inspectors there were, and so parishes were grouped together so that each parish had a more realist chance of raising the required money from the parish rates. This grouping of parishes was called the Union, hence Birk! enhead Union. I don't know about other countries, but in Britain we always paid council rates, now called community rates. The poorer the community, the less rates received by the council. Pretty much the same as the nineteenth century with the parish rates. Hope I haven't confused matters even more! Best wishes, Helen
Dear Juliet, thank you. For some time i tried to find were Ralph Peers died in FLORIDA but i have never found out a thing. Also i could find no info on ralphs mother after she came back to uk from America. The family are a bit of a puzzle to me but lack of info may be due to living in Malta. The only other thing i can suggest re samuel is that he died while living with children out of the area.Sorry not to have more. Hi Keith, Well, I hadn't really until your email. I had only noted that Betsey/Elizabeth's father John Millington was supposedly 85 in the 1841 census. (b abt 1756). I couldn't find a definate birth for Elizabeth but the nearest I found was one bp at Daresbury on 7.5.1786, father John and mother Betty. So just now I found a marriage that fits; John Millington and Betty Ellams m 4.8.1782 at Runcorn. Have no idea if this is correct. We still need to find Samuel in 1851 - at least that will give us a birth place. Sorry Folks All I have for this marriage is that they married in Woodchurch on 26/8/1828 , that she was 17 years and witness was John Youds. She died 16/5/1847 aged 36 years in Tranmere. These families are fond of naming patterns so eldest son called John and eldest daughter called Mary Hope this helps regards Margaret -----Original Message----- From: gordon evans [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 19 October 2004 18:55 To: [email protected] Subject: [BKHD-Wirral] Martha YOUDS Ann wrote:- >Hello Margaret, several of us are tracing the YOUDS folk, can you >please >tell us the names of Martha YOUDS parents?
