Hello from sunny and showery Portugal. Thanks to all on the list who replied, especially Wendy who put me on track with the Wirral Archive. They have found Edward Alexander SUTTON in Flaybrick cemetery in a private grave (what does that mean please?) with his wife who died in 1889 and 2 children who died in 1867 and 1869. As I have the plot number etc, is it possible to find out if there is a headstone? It is Church of England section number 3, plot 389. The third section on the right from the Tollemache road entrance and the second on the left from the Boundary Road entrance according to the information provided by the Archive. If anyone is there and would be prepared to photograph and e mail me any memorial if one exists I would be very, very grateful. Alice Thanks for this. Another lister has pointed out that Flaybrick did not open until 1864 so it is possible that it was in St Oswald's or possibly St Mary's. Who would have the burial records for St Oswald's church or St Mary's for 1858? Would it be the Wirral archives? I have asked them today about Edward's son (Edward Alexander) who died in 1914 in Wallasey and is probably in Rake Lane cemetery. My gggg grandfather Edward Alexander Sutton was the informant at his fathers death in October 1858 . His residence was given as 3b Dock Cottages Birkenhead. If someone has the 1861 census could they please see if he is there, and who he is there with? Many thanks Alan Sutton www. <http://www.ownersinportugal.org/> ownersinportugal.org
I am wondering where my gggg grandfather would have been buried. He died on 21st October 1858 at 3c Dock Cottages Birkenhead. Alan Sutton www. <http://www.ownersinportugal.org/> ownersinportugal.org

Jen, Greetings! I saw your name listed as a response to another gentleman - named John. In November 2001, you sent me a response to query regarding my great grandmother - Mary BEBINGTON. You sent the following: Hello John No, unfortunately I only have the 1851 for the Wirral. I too am wanting information from the 1861. However I had a look for your Mary Bebington on the 1851 and this came to light:- Thos Green, Head Married 36 Agricultural Labourer born Bebington Hannah Green, married 40 born Stockport Ellen Green daughter age 7 born Bebington Robert Green son age 4 born Bebington Thomas Green son age 2 born Bebington John Langley stepson age 18 Agricultural labourer born Birkenhead Ann Langley stepdaughter age 12 born Lancashire Liverpool MARY BEBINGTON nurs(e) child age 9 months. On the line above for Ann Langley place of birth is Lancashire Liverpool. For Mary the enumerator has put a ditto under Lancashire and then a capital R? Not sure what that means. There are only two Bebington names on the census - the other a George is lodging in Birkenhead. Also what is interesting is that this family is at the same reference and page number as your Whitehead family so must have lived very close. The Greens are at the bottom of page 111a and top of 111b then one house uninhabited, a Davies family and then the Whitehead family. No address as such is given except for Bebington Township. I remember when I was searching the Parish Registers at Christleton I saw an entry for a Benjamin Christleton and he was a foundling who had been left on the blacksmith's doorstep. They had probably called him Christleton after where he was found. I wonder if this is the case with Mary above? Anyway, lots there for you to chew over - hope it is of some help although disappointing that this Mary has no parents for you to check against. Could be it is a different Mary but the name doesn't seem that common and the age fits? Best of luck with that one - looks like it may be difficult. Regards, Jen ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- I sent you this to jog your memory and to give you a big THANK YOU for your help, even though your message is several years old. I have referred to your e-mail response many times to many people, including Antony Lambert. A friend of mine in Kent has finally solved the mystery. Mary BEBINGTON has been an enigma for quite some time. She married John FARRALL in 1873 and the father's name was missing from the certificate. In 1950, she received a congratulatory telegram and letter from King George VI on her 100th birthday. The family records listed her birth as 6 June 1850. The letter from Buckingham Palace mentioned her birthday on 20 June 1950. The Palace will not send out such letters without some proof - I did not have that proof available. There has been lots of discussion about the term "Nurse Child", and your example of CHRISTLETON above struck a chord. In a last ditch effort, my friend in Kent called St Catherines Church and pleaded with them to review thier records for June 1850. FINALLY, we found that a child had been left on the steps of the church on 19 June 1850 (no name). She was christened Mary BEBINGTOIN on 20 June 1850 at St Catherine. The Palace letter was the clue. - 20 June 1850. Thanks again for your help - sometimes the search takes a while! Kind regards, John Farrall Burke, Virginia
Thank you John I have had a couple of replies and the general consensus seems to be Rake Lane. It's a good place to start anyway. If anyone is looking at burial records for Rake Lane and comes across Margaret and Elizabeth HELSBY died 1907 and 1914 I would be grateful to hear. Hi List Any thoughts from anyone as to where someone who died in Bell Road Seacombe could be buried? I am looking for a Margaret HELSBY who died in 1907 who should be buried with her sister Elizabeth who died in 1914. If anyone is searching cemetery records and comes across these names I would be grateful to hear from you. Jen
I'm looking for 1861 details of John BENNETT b about 1820 in Llanfair Montgomeryshire I think. Married to Margaret ( Hughes)Several census details are different but I think must be transcriber or enumerator errors. I have what I think is the same family with him listed as Edward in 1851. I have 1871 details and 1881 the birthplace is different But I think I have that one sorted. I am hoping the 1861 may help sorting out and the I MIGHT be able to trace the births and marriage. This has been a major brick wall- I WILL GET OVER IT! Thanks Dot
I bought a very interesting book yesterday Moreton and Districts Patriots 1914-1919 by Stephen McGreal ISBN 1901231151 Stephen is a voluntary military researcher for a local radio station, specialising in the Great war (WW1) and has researched each soldier in some detail Book contains biographical info, photos, details of service, regiments, newspaper articles and more on the soldiers from this area Blurb on the back reads "The tale of a nation at war, focussing on a tranquil village, its war memorials and the servicemen from throughout Merseyside commemorated there on. The narrative skilfully combines the social aspects of a rural village with the apolyptic events of a world at war, at the time paying tribute to the regions servicement who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War for civilisation" Stephen requests on the back page "My next project concerning the Great War will be the history of the 15th and 16th battalions of the Cheshire Regiment better known as the "Birkenhead Bantams". The members of thses battalions, originally deemed unsuitable for military service due to the lack of height, proved their worth on the battlefields of France and Flanders. I would be extrmemly grateful for information or loans of artifacts relating to these volunteers" He lists a phone number that I'll pass on to anyone who can help him Caryl
