Doug, I think I have found your Aunty Christine, however, as in most cases when trying to research something which took place whilst people were under pressure there are conflicting reports. Here though is my search results on the reported deaths of three people in Clive Road Oxton on the night of 9th January 1941. No. 23 Clive Road, Fredrick John Dodd aged 63 was killed with his daughter, Freda Dodd aged 16. Susan Christie Duncan Walker aged 50 was killed at No. 21 Clive Road, but is listed as living at 160 Grange Road West, which is in easy walking distance of Clive road. Is this your Aunty? A very good publication called Birkenhead at War 1939 - 1945 refers to people being killed at No. 6 Clive Road but I consider that to be a mistake as only the above persons are listed as being killed at No.21/3 and this confirms your information Bob T. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Doug" <d.s.mason@btinternet.com> To: <BIRKENHEAD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, March 08, 2006 10:32 AM Subject: [BKHD-Wirral] The Blitz > Many thanks to everyone who has taken the trouble to reply to my posting > regarding the Blitz in Birkenhead. > > Wendy- the Port Cities site you pointed me to was very interesting and > well illustrated. Dorothy Many thanks for making that search for me. Unfortunately I had no evidence about the date other than it being after his first wife's death in 1931 and before his death in 1941. Also I wasn't certain that marriage took place until now. Could anyone kindly help me find the record of a marriage for Thomas Edward Keene sometime between 1931 and 1941 probably in Birkenhead. Not sure of his wife's name but possibly Gwen. Thanks Doug
Hi Doug, After starting at 1931 I finally found the marriage in: June Quarter 1941 Keene Thomas E - Thomas - Birkenhead - 8a 1822 Thomas Gwen - Keene - Birkenhead - 8a 1822 So. Thomas married a Gwen Thomas in 1941. You can now send for a certificate with this information if you need it. Regards, Dorothy
Many thanks to everyone who has taken the trouble to reply to my posting regarding the Blitz in Birkenhead. Wendy- the Port Cities site you pointed me to was very interesting and well illustrated. There is a great deal of "clicking" required to view it but it is very well worth the effort. One key piece of information was that Birkenhead suffered far worse in March 1941 than it did in May. Perhaps the incident I refered to in Clive Road happened in March and not in May. Dave & Bob - Thanks for your offers of help. If you come up with anything I will be most grateful. A date may eventually lead to a newspaper article, or am I being over ambitious? Andy, Tony & Margaret - Thanks for the potential leads. I may be able to follow them up when I know a little more. Doug

Thinking about the Blitz in 1941 made me check my late Uncle's details. Duncan LASCELLES married Gertie HAUGHTON (born c.1917) at Birkenhead Register Office in October 1939. Gertie's address was 61, Holt Road, Birkenhead. He died at the Rolls Royce factory in Crewe on Sunday afternoon, 29 December 1940. (A lone bomber dumped some bombs on a field, except for one which caught the corner of the factory.) My Mum was not "allowed" to go to the funeral - men only....and was never told if he was buried or where. The witness at the wedding in 1939 was Arthur HUGHES. The death was registered by 'A. HUGHES, brother in law' of 6, Balfour Road, Birkenhead. I am assuming 'A' was Arthur, and he was married to a sister of Gertie. Do any of these names, or addresses ring any bells please? Contact with Gertie was lost after the war. I would love to make contact with anyone from these families. Regards, Ruth in Brum.
Bob I don't know the exact date of the incident, only that I've been told it was during the May blitz of 1941. My mother's family were living at 21 Clive Road, Oxton, Birkenhead, (my mother had got married and moved in 1940, phew!) In the house were my grandfather, Thomas Edward Keene who was asleep upstairs. Under the stairs were my Aunt, Blanche Keene, her friend Christine Walker, and the couple who lived next door at 23. I don't know their names. A bomb landed on 23 and totally destroyed it and partly destroyed 21. I know the couple from 23 and Christine Walker were killed. Blanche was badly injured but survived and grandad also survived. Can you find any record of the incident? I think there is a Book of Remberance at either Wallasey Town Hall or the Wirral Archives in the old Birkenhead Town Hall Regards Tony Barratt ----- Original Message ----- From: "Doug" <d.s.mason@btinternet.com> To: <BIRKENHEAD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 06, 2006 9:35 PM Subject: May Blitz 1941 > Can anybody tell me if there is an accessable record of casualties in > Birkenhead of the May Blitz in 1941. > Doug > > ______________________________
Thankyou for the reply , Yvonne in OMAN
There is a publication called "Birkenhead at War 1939-1945 that amongst other things lists the 500 or so civilians killed during the blitz. I haven't read this book but the equivilent publication for Wallasey (Wallasey at War 1939-1945) has names, ages, addresses relationship to other casualties and in some cases other family information. I too would be interested in deaths from the 1941 may Blitz. Yvonne
At the National Archieves Kew there is a book which lists all civilian deaths (in the library part). I also found details of the time I was bombed out there (I was living in Middlesex) in other records, can't remember details but the enquiry staff very good. Margaret Wedge
Doug I have a copy of the Birkenhead at War book. If you would like me to scan any page (dates?) I'll try. Given my inneptitude in things electronic it may take a day or so!
