We just received the following obituary from Lubbock, Texas. I believe it was earlier reported in error that Joe's funeral was held last Wednesday. Carl & Barbara Mann *********** Monday, July 30, 2001, "The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal" JOE BIRDWELL Services for Joe Birdwell, 73, of Lubbock will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. John Ballard officiating. Committal services will be 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the family mausoleum in Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under direction of Rix Funeral Directors. He died Sunday, July 29, 2001. He was born Oct. 14, 1927, in Caddo Mills and graduated high school there prior to serving in the U.S. Navy. Following his discharge, he was employed by banks in Dallas and Grand Prairie before moving to Lubbock to join American State Bank on Aug. 11, 1950. He retired from ASB on Jan. 4, 1991, as senior vice president and a member of the board of directors. He had been involved in many civic activities over the years, particularly the Red Raider Club, the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce and the United Way. He was a Baptist and a Mason. He was involved with the South Plains Antique Tractor Club and the Nifty Fifties Car Club. He married Aggie Ellis on May 6, 1961, in Dallas. Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael, of Flower Mound; two sisters, Pat Clark of Lubbock and Janey Fenton of Dallas; and two grandchildren. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, 3404 73rd St., Lubbock, TX 79423, or to Lubbock Meals on Wheels, 2304 34th St., Lubbock, TX 79411. Family Members will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
