Searching for info on Rush Birdwell b. 19 Dec 1877 Sabine Co. TX. His full name was David Rush, but some accounts have him as R.D. He left Sabine County in the 1920's-1930's, I believe, and went to the Rio Grande Valley. He must have liked it there, for he stayed, and to my knowledge never came back to East Texas. His place of birth is thought to have been Linn Creek, Camden County, Missouri. He died December 29, 1910 in Eldridge, Laclede County, Missouri. He lived 64 years 5 months and 15 days. The cause of death was listed as pneumonia. His occupation was a farmer. The information on his death certificate was furnished by his daughter Susie Birdwell. Susie and Elmer went to Lebanon, Missouri and brought their father back to Taney County for burial. He is buried in McCarty Cemetery near Cedar Creek, Missouri. He is buried beside his wife Eliza S. Tipton Brown. James Anvil’s father was James Brown, birthplace Virginia, and his mother was Margret (Demecy) Brown, birthplace unknown. James had a sister, Mary Ann, who married Robert Hampton; a sister Myrtle who married a Slavin; a sister Nancy (Rose) who married Tom Phoebe; and a brother Frank of which nothing is known. Information was that James Anvil had a half-sister (same mother--different father) and that she lived in Camden County, Missouri in the early 1900’s. Could James Anvil been with her when he died? Nell Wood Baker told this: In 1900’s James was at Minnie’s and John Thomas Wood’s. Sometime that year Harris Acree took him to Wagoner to catch a train. To where is unknown. Grandpa was (what I think is called) a huckster (a peddler) in Oklahoma. John Wood said he had a dog that went with him, they always knew when grandpa was expected as the dog came home a few hours before grandpa. Grandfather was a freighter, a farmer, and I have been told he was a construction worker on the railroads. Eliza S. Tipton was born in Tipton (could be Tifton) Georgia, July 9, 1840. She died at her home in Cedar Creek, Taney County, Missouri, February 1,1905. She is buried by her husband in McCarty Cemetery The first that seems to be known of the Tipton family is the year 1856 in Phelps County, Missouri. The first names of her parents are not known. But could her father have been Mortimer Tipton? Eliza’s sister Winiford had the first son in the family and named him Mortimer. Then Uncle Sam had named his first born son Mortie. That rouses the question: Could Eliza’s father been a Mortimer? Eliza’s sister Winiford L. was born April 30, 1836. Died February 1920 at Taneyville. Buried Dickens Cemetery, just south of Taneyville. She married George B. Matthews born January 19, 1829. Died November 23, 1909. George served in the Civil War with Company D, 29th Regiment, Missouri Volunteers. Their son Mortimer died while George was at war. Winiford (Loe) didn’t know Uncle George when he returned. He told her to call Mortimer. He would know him. Aunt Loe and Uncle George reared a boy John Lamb. John married Violet Kilby. They had Gerald and Thelma. Henry Lamb was John’s father. Eliza has a brother Sam. He never married. He enlisted on one side in the Civil War and Uncle George the other. Neither one knew the other had gone to war. Sam never returned. That is all that was heard of him. The day Eliza died, Susie said that morning a voice told her that one of her parents would die that day. The voice then said, “It will be your father.” Susie didn’t tell Bit (her husband). Onie thinks it was Delbert that went across the river to get Mom (Susie). Bit (Joseph Birdwell) said, “We will go tomorrow.” (Bit didn’t think the ice would hold them going across the river). Mom (Susie) said, I’m going now.” If I remember correctly, Mom said she had not been there very long until Grandma Eliza asked for a drink of water, but was gone before they could give her the water. Uncle Sam and Aunt Cora lived in part of the house with Grandma and Grandpa. Onie ran to the barn for Grandpa and Uncle Sam when Grandma took sick. Did Uncle Sam and Aunt Cora continue to live in the home place until the fall of 1907? They and their children, Willie, Onie, Ted, and Blanch left for Baylor County, Texas. Susie and Bit went along with them. They lived in a sod house until their house was ready. When they moved from the sod house, Bit caught pneumonia and died. Susie brought him back to be buried in Roley (Riley) Cemetery in the Horse Shoe Bend near Lead Hill, Arkansas in the same cemetery with his parents. Susie returned to Texas coming back to Missouri in 1909. In 1909 James Anvil wrote Aunt Minnie and in it he wanted to know if Susie was still with Loe, (but was he asking Loe Richards or Loe Matthews?) At some time in Taney County after Uncle Sam left for Texas, Delbert and Stella lived in the old home place. Grandad James Anvil still lived there. This was probably 1908. Uncle Sam and mom went to Texas in the fall of 1907. Onie said the trip took 3 weeks. Doc was born in Texas October 20, 1908. On the trip as they crossed the Arkansas River on a ferry the old dog (the one in the picture taken of Grandma-Pa, Delbert, and Sam) fell in the river. Onie and Willie screamed until the ferryman pulled the dog out of the river. Onie said her father had 3 horses; one he would work every other day (Old Pad) because he would balk. Onie would ride with Susie and Bit that day. In her words she was a fraidy cat. Susie said when she lived in the Horse Shoe Bend, Missouri, their home was a log one with a dirt floor. She hung sheets around the walls to hide the ugliness. She would tell how afraid she was and how if it was dark she would listen for Bit, in the wagon to start through the “narrs” (narrow). It seemed to me like they lived at the end of nowhere. Aunt Lillie’s stepson Troy Cornelision said mom was afraid to stay alone and Aunt Lillie would send him. Troy said he didn’t know why for he was as big a coward as Aunt Susie was. At one time Branson, Missouri held a grape festival each fall. Susie and Lillie were walking along a path, when a lady came toward them taking up most of the path. Mom said to Lillie, “that lady is as big as we are.” The lady came on brushing against Susie or Lillie, went on past, whirled and came back. This time crowding Susie and Lillie off the path so they took a good look at her and one of them said,”Why its Minnie.” That night something like 25 or 26 went to Pearl and John Smith’s for the night. Susie asked Alma what she thought when she saw so many. Alma said “I just grabbed the hoe and started digging taters.” In 1921 or 1922 Susie and Bill (Susie’s second husband William Lee Robertson) took us kids to Uncle Sam’s for a vacation. Susie was having sewing done. As she was being fitted, Arclo was taking in the action. He said to Susie, “You will look like a hound dog going through Texas in that dress.” We had a wonderful vacation. Blew soap bubbles everywhere, almost got in trouble with Ted and Doc for messing up the water trough. When Minnie and John left Missouri for Oklahoma, one of the children became ill. They returned home (to Missouri) until the child was able to make the trip. (This was told at the Wood’s reunion in 1976.) A few years back a man much younger than the Wood’s boys said he would not like to try and do a days work along side them. He said the Wood’s boys were workers. (This was told to my sister Winnie.) When Grandpa James Anvil was going to leave on the train at Wagoner, his daughter Minnie made him a money belt. He had over $2000 (Nel knew of this). I’ve heard Mother (Susie) tell that she and some of the children were playing and Grandma Brown sent them to come and get ready as Lillie was getting married. Susie and Pearl Smith said Lillie was 14 at the time. (Married Bud Ricketts.) Bud Rickett’s granddaughter, Alma Loy has been told that where Jefferson City is now was at one time Bud Ricketts homeplace, “the Ricketts Farm.” Delbert Brown was born to Mary Frances (Minnie) before she married John Wood. He spent most of his youth living with James Anvil and Eliza Brown. Granddad Brown lost is sight in 1943. I remember his sitting on the front porch with a chew of Beechnut Chewing Tobacco, his dog at his side, and a pocket knife to sharpen. He liked to trade knives. I also learned that if you moved anything in his chicken pen you had “hell to pay” if he caught you. He passed away in his sleep in 1956. Mammie (Stella) worked in the Haskell Cannery and several years after Granddad passed away she married Grover Box. He preceded her in death.
