Velma and Rose: My information says that the "Trail of Tears" began on October 1, 1838, and ended on March 25, 1839. The journey took 139 days. Sad. Carl has an ancestor (another line) who marched with the Cherokee on the Trail of Tears, then went back to Georgia to settle on indian land. Sorry about that. Also, I show Sarah Duncan born November 12, 1798, married on September 8, 1815. Is this incorrect? Barbara Mann

I am searching for the parents of a Andrew Jackson Birdwell that was born Aug 10/16, 1849 in either MO, MS or TN. He m. Rebecca Matilda Stinecipher in Dallas Co, MO, in 1872. Andrew and Rebecca had 8 children all born in Lawrence Co., MO except for the last one who was born in Newton Co., AR. Andrew's first son was named Felix Bowden Birdwell. Have not been able to find any reference to Andrew except for the 1880 Missouri Census and two land deeds from Lawrence County in 1882. Supposedly Andrew died in the spring of 1893 and is buried in the Taylor Brown Cemetery in Boone Co., AR. Per family stories handed down Andrew and some of his other family members were involved with Frank and Jesse James. Have no proof of this story, but it may be the reason why no one has been able to find any information on Andrew J. Birdwell. Please let me know if you feel that there may be any connection or if you know anything on this elusive ancestor of mine. Hope to hear from you... "Rusk Co., Texas History" by the Rusk Co. Historical Society, 1982: Page 112: John and Adeline Birdwell George Birdwell was born in 1721 in Stafford County, Virginia and died in 1781-1782 in Bedford County, Virginia. By his first wife he had a son, Robert. By his second wife, Mary Looney, he had thirteen other children. There is evidence that his father Benjamin Birdwell, was from England. John Birdwell was born September 24, 1770 in Botetourt County, Virginia. He died in April, 1854, in Rusk County, Texas. "Old-great-grandpap," the son of George and Mary Birdwell married Mary Allen in Sullivan County, Tennessee. He organized Birdwell Spring Baptist Church, Moulton, Alabama. He came to Texas with some of his children in 1838, settled at Old North Church in Nacogdoches County and resided there for two years before moving to Mt. Enterprise. His children were Nancy, Elizabeth, Sarah, Jane, Susan B., Allen, Ann, Lucinda, John Jr., and Tabitha. Colonel Allen Birdwell, who was born March 22, 1802 in Tennessee, died in March 1893 at Mt. Enterprise. He married Lucinda Ross of Tennessee, who died about 1844. On July 29, 1845, he married Sarah Jane Vannoy. He served several terms in the Texas Legislature. His home was removed and restored at Monti Verdi Plantation, and his portrait hangs there. John Calhoun Birdwell was born April 7, 1829. He died January 6, 1869 in Nacogdoches County. He married Adeline Burney Cunningham, daughter of Reverend Jeremiah and Polly Cunningham, on June 14, 1849, in Rusk County. He was the first child of Colonel Allen and Lucinda Ross Birdwell. He moved his family from Mt. Enterprise to Flatswood in Nacogdoches County and built his home before going to the Civil War, where he died soon after returning. His children were: James Pinkney, Jeremiah Cunningham, Lourinda Ross, Pauline Jane, Joseph Allen, Addie Ann, and John C., Jr. When John Calhoun Birdwell died in 1869, he had lived in Nacogdoches County only a few years and was carried back about twelve miles, to Mt. Enterprise for burial in the Birdwell graveyard on the Birdwell farm, now a pasture. John Birdwell, "old great-grandpap", John C., his grandson, and John Birdwell (Old Uncle John) are all three buried in a row side by side. John C. in the middle, Grandpap on the southside, and Uncle John on the north side. Lucinda Ross Birdwell was most likely the first buried there. James Pinkney Birdwell was born October 4, 1850 at Mt. Enterprise, and died August 18, 1915, in Flattswood. He barried Elzira Ophelia Adeline Bates on October 12, 1879. She was the daughter of David Evans and Elizabeth Jane Bullock Bates. Their daughter, Jessie Aslee, married James Walton Mitchell. Their daughter, Linnie E. died young. James Eulon's first wife was Clara McCuiston. His second wife was Clara Dean. James David married Arthur McFarland. George Preston married Bertie Branch. Matthew Madison married William Acrey. Myrtle Maggie married Floyd Bone. Lurlie married R.W. Thackston. Jerry Herbert married Edwina Ridley. Eunice married Hurbert R. Stewart, and Bernie Veston married Roy M. Wedgeworth. Michelle Catherine Prichard is the daughter of Camee Cameron Foley, great-great-granddaughter of Jessie Birdwell Mitchell, and the eleventh generation of Benjamin Birdwell. >From "Rusk County (Texas) History", published in 1982 by the Rusk Co. Historical Commission: Andrew Birdwell was born in 1822 in Tennessee and died in 1852 in Rusk County. Andrew married Elizabeth Carolyn Jones in Rusk County on November 18, 1847. Carolyn was born July 28, 1831 and died February 20, 1912. They had two sons--Robert (Dick) Franklin, born in 1848 and died in Oklahoma; and George Thomas, who was born May 15, 1852 and died September 30, 1925. Dick married at a very early age and resided in Oklahoma. He had four children-- Abbey, Luddey, Ross and Gene. His wife died when the children were in their teens. Soon after her death, the two girls, Abbey and Luddey, moved from Oklahoma to Minden, Texas to live with their aunt and uncle, George and Sarah Birdwell. The girls then lived in Rusk County for fourteen years, and soon after their father, Dick, remarried, they moved back to Oklahoma. Dick had four children by his second marriage--George A., Syble, Wilber, and Arthur. Arthur now lives in Dickerson, Texas at the age of 78. He is the only living d! escendant of Dick Birdwell. Hey Gang, In case some of you don't have this. Have a great day Rose "Rusk County, Texas Families" by the Rusk County Historical Society, 1982, page 113: John and Linnie Birdwell John (Buddie) Birdwell and Mary Melinda (Linnie) Mansinger were childhood playmates who grew up in the Patrick Community, fell in love, married and lived happily as long as they lived. John Birdwell was always called Buddie by his seven sisters and his only brother, W.H. (Bird) Birdwell. He and his twin sister (Isabel (Jude), were the youngest children of George Birdwell, Jr. and his wife, Sarah, of the the Patrick Community. The twins were born at Patrick January 14, 1883, he was brunette and she a redhead. John's grandfather, George Birdwell, Sr., had come to Texas in 1839 and settled in the Harper Community. Mary Melinda (Linnie) Mansinger, born December 23, 1884, was the daughter of Ellen Hooper Bearden and Gilbert Shaw Mansinger of Patrick. She had one sister, Maggie, and three brothers, E.D. (Duff) Mansinger, Abe Mansinger, and J.R. (Bob) Mansinger. They were the first grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Bearden, with whom Linnie spent many childhood hours. John and Linnie attended the Patrick School. As a teenager, Linnie, who liked to excel at whatever she did, was urged by her teacher to attend Normal school and become a teacher. She did become a teacher and later taught at Ragley Sawmill. That ended her teaching career. At the time of her marriage to Buddie January 1, 1911, Linnie was a widow with a small daughter, Nora Belle Iverson, born during her marriage to Pope Iverson. Soon after his marriage, John sold his farm at Patrick and he and Linnie, with her little daughter, moved to Gainesville, where they bought a farm with an orchard and a vineyard. Linnie, always energetic, enjoyed gardening, picking fruit, canning and preserving, so she liked living on the farm. She had other hobbies: sewing, crocheting, and quilting. Being self-reliant, she carded her own quilt bats. In Gainesville, John, who had been called "Buddie" heretofore, became John. So accustomed was he to being called Buddie, he sometimes overlooked a gretting from a new acquainance. He even became "John" to Linnie, who had always before called him "Buddie". John and Linnie's first child, Nellie, was born in Gainesville; then came George and Mary. Then World War I. Married men were being called. Lennie, thinking John would have to go, wanted to return to Rusk County where her family lived; therefore, in 1917 they returned, first to Pine Hill, then to Patrick, and then back to Pine Hill, where they lived almost forty years.Their youngest child, Ann, was born there and all the children grew up there. There also John served as constable in the early 1940's. The children became adults. Nora married Herman Hunt in 1919. Nellie became a teacher, George, a pipefitter, Mary, a beautician, and Ann chose to remain with her parents, who lived in Pine Hill until John's death August 14, 1959. Linnie and Ann moved to Mt. Enterprise, where Nellie and her husband, Joe Compton, lived. Linnie died May 23, 1978. Her five children surveved her: Nora, in Patrick; Nellie and Ann, in Mt. Enterprise; George, in Shreveport, Louisiana, and Mary (Mrs. Jimmy Clifford), in Harlingen. There are also three generation of grandchildren. Weldon - here is another clue regards the William Birdwell we seem to have a hard time figuring out which family he came from .. I am beginning to think he is NOT the Wm Birdwell born 1772 (son of Old George) Sullivan County. The William I am talking about is the William in the 1830 census of Jackson County - he had teenage daughters. (1) Jane born abt 1816 - married Ellis Fawbush 1850 census says she was born in KENTUCKY (2) Polly born abt 1816 - married to Johnson Spurlock 1850 says she was born in TENNESSEE You have done far more research on this William than I have. Seems I remember you and Aggie Birdwell talking about the William that was possibly a brother to Alexander in KY and how later, Wm shows up in Jackson County .... I have often wondered why no other sons of OLD GEORGE removed from Sullivan County to Jackson County in the first place .... Another side bar here - my Joseph Birdwell (the one born 1809 and married to Eliz Chaffin) has also been placed as an older brother to the above Jane Fawbush and Polly (Mary Ann) Spurlock ... The given name "Johnson" was evident in Joseph's family including a son and some of his grandkids .... Also, Polly Spurlock named her first two sons, Joseph and George (after another brother ?) Without further proof, I believe the Wm Birdwell who was born 1772 and married Betsey Lefever and the William Birdwell who evidently married a "Rachel" are two different Williams ... Just some food for thought for you .... Jerry Anderson
