    3. The info I have on Mary Allen came from several sources: Jerry H. Birdwell and on 10--29-1999 to the Birdwell-List from Gwenneth Aenone Marshall Mitchell and also info from Rusk Co., TX History by the Rusk Co. Historical Soc. 1982, p. 112. All say the same: daughter of Malcolm Allen & Margaret Henderson but do not go back into parents of Malcolm Allen. They had 2 daughters: Elizabeth, m. James Isbell Sarah H. m. Levi Isbell Hope this helps Velma

    3. I have read that "Old" George Birdwell's son John married Mary Allen, born about 1770 VA. "or Sullivan Co., N.C./TN.," a "daughter of Malcolm Allen and Margaret Henderson." Can anyone provide proof of Mary's parentage and any other information on her lineage? Was Malcolm Allen the son of the earlier Malcolm Allen (1710-92) in Augusta Co. and Botetourt Co., VA., who married Mary Hughes? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    3. I attempted to send a zipped file of a gedcom to the group and not sure the message went thru, much less the zipped file. Here was the message: I am going to mail Rose a gedcom of Wm and Betsey Lefever Birdwell with 9 generations of descendents ... Has 533 names and 152 families, so she can adjust the BIRDTRACKS web site, if she wants to ... I won't beyond a shadow of a doubt guarantee anyone it is "ironcald", but it is the most current research anyone has done on this family to my knowledge .... Thanks a whole bunch to Effie and Weldon ... Their input was much appreciated ... ROSE, I'm torch passing - email me your mailing address <grin> ... Jerry

    3. Rose, et al I have searched the CD "Book of Immigrants 1607-1776" from Broderbund and found nil - not one single solitary listing of Birdwells, Bridwells, Burdwells - you name it. So it looks like we are going to have to find another source to find out where our Birdwell came from. Of course, these records are not all inclusive, but if we found records back in other states besides Virginia earlier than our George, then they had to come from somewhere! Any suggestions. Effie

    1. Jackson County Birdwells
    2. Jerry Anderson
    3. Email Number 3 .. (1803) Joseph, (1810) George Who I think were brothers - they probably had a sister named Elizabeth ... Who was Margaret Birdwell ??? We were recently enlightened to a new Jackson County Birdwell - An apparent widow named Margaret. We were told this Margaret was a McCoin (McKaughan) who was born in PA around 1775 and was the wife of a Joseph Birdwell ... That's all we needed, another Joseph Birdwell in Jackson County Tenn in the early 1800s ... Over the past couple of months, Weldon and I have concluded the single piece of evidence that says this Margaret was married to a "Joseph Birdwell" was a letter written over a 100 years ago by a person who was probably 80 or better at the time ... We think Margaret McCoin was married to a William Birdwell - regardless of this letter - who happened to be the son of Robert and grandson of Old George .... Children of Margaret Birdwell - Joseph born 1803 and married to Elizabeth Jane Thackston (Thaxton) ... George W. Birdwell born 1810 and married to Lucinda (I was told today Lucinda Brown ???) ... and a daughter Elizabeth who was born abt 1812 children of Joseph and Elizabeth Jane Birdwell: 1. Temple born 1827 in Alabama - md Amanda Thackston 2. Elizabeth born 1829 in Alabama - md George Long the fact that the first two children were born in Alabama is a primary reason Weldon and I suspect Joseph was William's son and this may very well be the Wm that was hanged in Alabama at the end of the 1820s and Margaret was Wm's widow .... The remaining children were all born in Tennessee ..... 3. Margaret (b 1832) ,, 4. Phoebe (b 1833) .. 5. Mariah (b 1835) 6. Geroge W. born 1836 - md Eliza A. (???) 7. Joseph Jr. born 1839 - md Surelda (???) at least 6 children 8. Mary born 1841 9. William born 1844 md Nancy (Cansida ???) 10 Benjamin Franklin born 1846 - md Mary Gaines at least 4 children 11 Blake Thaxton born 1849 - md S. B. Keith children of George and Lucinda Birdwell 1. William born abt 1835 2. Joseph born abt 1837 3. Serena born abt 1839 4. Margaret born abt 1841 5. Mary born abt 1844 6. John born abt 1846 7. Geroge W. born abt 1848 8. James born abt 1850 9. Amanda born abt 1852 I have not traced out this family beyond the children and they were determined by 1850 1860 1870 census only. 2. Jerry Anderson
    3. VERA ... hi ... happy new year ... I am 100% convinced you are wrong (and it is not your fault) on the placing of the Jackson County Birdwells ... The info has been wrong for years ... My research is a lot more accurate than what Rose has on the BirdTracks Web Site and I told her so .. (again, not her fault - she is doing a wonderful job) ...... Several things - And, I am certainly open for suggestions from any one in the group .... (1) Betsey Lefever is NOT the Rachel Birdwell found in the 1830 Census of Jackson County .... Elizabeth "Betsey" Lefever did marry William Birdwell of what is now Sullivan County, but her nickname was not Rachel - Weldon and I both think this "Rachel" was the wife of James Birdwell (grandson of Old George) who died Feb 1850 and leaving "Rachel Burdwell" as a widow living with her daugher, Jane Birdwell Fawbush in the 1850 census ... (2) NO Joseph Birdwell of Jackson or Smith County TN was the son of Benjamin and Mary Perry Birdwell - they had a son named Joseph who was born around 1809 and died around 1885 - he never left Sullivan County ... (3)You said George W. Birdwell's wife (the one born around 1810) was Lucinda Brown ... I hope you're right - where did you get the information she was a BROWN ??? (4) - there are TWO Joseph Birdwells ... actually 3 if you count the son of Benjamin and Mary Perry Birdwell - but set him aside. Joseph born 1803 ,,, IS NOT ,,, I repeat, not the son of William and Elizabeth "Betsey" Lefever Birdwell ..... their son is the Joseph who was born 1809 and married Elizabeth Chaffin ... Like Dennis Miller says ,,, "that is my opinion, I could be wrong" (wink) But seriously, absence of documented records due to the powers to be at the Jackson County Courthouse deciding we didn't need to see any such wills, property records, marriage bonds etc - We may never be 101% positive ... 3. Hey Gang, Happy Y2K to everyone!! There seems to be a lot of new interest in the Jackson Co. Birdwell's, and that's great!!! That's where I got stuck, and put out a plea of help to our Tinasee Cuzzin, Jerry Anderson. What I would like all of you with Jackson Co. roots to do is to send me your ancestral line, which I will add together, and then put them on Birdtracks. And please be assured that any private info on the living will not be added. Thanks to all of you for making this a great rootsweb list, and for all the info that you have already contributed. Rose P.S. If you haven't already done it, please go to the website, the url is listed at the bottom of my signature. It's a little hard to get around in right now, but my DIL and I are working on an index right now. 3. This is Email number 2 to the Group ... The children of Joseph (1809) and Elizabeth Chaffin Birdwell .... From my notes and research to date .... Lucinda born abt 1832 ... It has been reported on this forum that she died in 1851 ?? I would like to point out something I found in the 1860 Census ... on the actual census in the Flynn's Lick area of Jackson County = entry number 263 is John Jackson (age 26) - John Petty (age ?) - Lucinda Petty (age 28) and Blake Thaxton age (22) ........... entry number 24 is Joseph Birdwell, wife Elizabeth and the other children. My "guess" would be this is Lucinda as wife to John Petty - I have not looked at the 1870 census yet ... Louvern(a) Birdwell born abt 1834 married James E Billingsley it was his second marriage. You can find them as entry 262 in the same 1860 census ... James and Louvern had at least 9 children according to subsequent census reports. William C. Birdwell (born 8 Oct 1836 - died 29 Apr 1903) is buried by his brother James Marion Birdwell and their mother Elizabeth in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Cross Plains, TN (along with their wives) .... William C married Feraby Jackson. I am the only person that I know of who has placed her as a Jackson. I'm not 100% positive - but it makes sense ,, besides, there was a Feraby Jackson born the same year as William's wife ... They can be found in the 1860 cenus entry 265, next to his parents. They had at least 9 children ... Melvina Birdwell and Serena Birdwell .. both born abt 1838 and both were in the 1860 census, but not in the 1870 census with their parents I am investigating to see if they were twins and if they married between 1860 and 1870 ... John J. Birdwell and Mariah Kirby ... they had 8 children ... I can bring their families fairly well into the early 1900s and in some instances, much later than that ...... This, of course, is my line Sally Birdwell - like Melvina and Serean, in the 1860 census but gone in the 1870 census ... Amanda Ruth Birdwell (born abt 1848) - she married William Ragland. I have not as yet traced this family beyond a grandchild, but they evidenly removed from Jackson to Robertson the same time the rest of the family did .... Amanda's mother Elizabeth was living with her son, John Ragland when Elizabeth died in 1901 at age 90 ... Johnson Birdwell .. (1849 - 1860) ... I am relying on the research of this son of Joseph and Elizabeth ... I have often wondered about the name "Johnson" .. A Birdwell sister to Joseph married a Johnson Spurlock ... Also, John J. Birdwell named his second son, Daniel Johnson Birdwell .. George W. Birdwell born Sep 1849 .. Not sure yet when he died or where. Howell Birdwell may know ... George married Samantha E. Jackson who was born Feb 1859 - she was 15 when she married. They had a very large family also - at least 9 children Mary Birdwell born abt 1852 - she married (I am speculating here) William Polk Billingsley ... You can find Polk Billingsley and Polly living next to John J (her brother) in the 1880 census ... I have not traced this line as yet ... More later ..... Happy New Year, by the way .... 3. Email Number 1 of what will be a series of Emails to the Group concerning Joseph Birdwell born 1809, of Jackson Co, TN ... Hi Rose (and everyone else) - Happy Holidays ... Sorry, I thought everyone had my new email address - it is NOT [email protected] any longer ....... as you can see ,,, [email protected] Weldon and Effie and I have been swapping info and theories on the Jackson County birdwell clan for about the past two or three months - maybe it's time to share with the whole group ... I suggest this ... THROW AWAY WHAT YOU'VE BEEN TOLD AND START OVER LIKE WE DID (many grins and girlie-man giggles here) The conclusion Weldon and I are coming to - There appears to be four branches of male BIRDWELLs in Jackson County that came from men born between 1803 and 1812 ... There were a couple others, but the offspring did not appear to reamin in the area as long as this four. 1. Joseph Birdwell born 1803 and married Elizabeth Thackston (Thaxton) 2. George W. Birdwell born abt 1810 and married Lucinda (??) Weldon and I think these two were brothers and were sons of an unknown Birdwell possibly named Joseph but more than likely named William and was the son of Robert (oldest son of old George) .. Very possibly, this is the same William that was hanged in Alabama ... 3. Joseph Birdwell born 1809 and married Elizabeth Chaffin - this is 4. John Harvey Birdwell born 1812 and married Martha Chaffin More than likely the sons of William and Betsey Lefever (who was not the "Rachel Birdwell" many have said she was ... The other BIRDWELL males who seem to be back and forth between Jackson County TN and Monroe County KY we believe to be the sons of Robert Birdwell ,,, who was the oldest son of old George ... My line comes off 1809 Joseph and Elizabeth Chaffin Birdwell .... I have not proved who Elizabeth Chaffin's parents were as yet ... She is not the daughter of Joseph Chaffin who married Nancy Fox who were parents of many CHAFFINS in Jackson County ... My research to this point says Elizabeth Chaffin and Joseph Chaffin were cousins ... Joseph Birdwell, son of William Birdwell and Betsey Lefever Birdwell Was born 1809 and died between 1870 and 1880 (probably Jackson County) ... had possible siblings named Jane (born 1804) who married William Fox ,,, Melvina (born 1810) who married Henderson Brown ,,, Serena (Born 1811)who married a PATE ,,, John Harvey Birdwell (born 1812) who married Martha Chaffin ,,, Mary Ann (born 1816) who married Johnson Spurlock ....................... I have placed these "possible siblings" in William and Betsey Lefever Birdwell's family due to research which includes a lot of speculation and the process of eliminating others - I am sure open to anyone saying otherwise ............ Joseph Birdwell born 1809 married Elizabeth Chaffin who was born 11 Apr 1811 (TN) and died 7 Sep 1901 in Cross Plains, Robertson County, TN .... I have seen her gravesite ... Children of Joseph and Elizabeth Chaffin Birdwell includes: 1. Lucinda born 1832 2. Louverna born 1834 3. Wm C. born 1836 4. Melvina born 1838 5. Serena born 1838 6. John J. born 1840 7. Jos Marion born 1842 8. Sally born 1845 9. Amanda Ruth born 1848 10 Johnson born 1849 11 Geo W. born 1849 12 Mary J. born 1852 I'll let you digest the above .... answer any questions .. and then expand on the families of the children very shortly ...
