    1. JOHN C. BIRDWELL - CIVIL WAR
    2. The letters of john C. BIRDWELL While he was in the Civil War can be seen here: http://www.lib.sfasu.edu/etrc/collect/manscrpt/birmain.htm John Calhoun Birdwell, son of Allen and Luinda Ross Birdwell, was born in Lawrence County, Alabama on April 7, 1829. By 1845 the family had moved to Rusk County, Texas, where Allen Birdwell served as a State Representative to the Texas Legislature from 1853 to 1854 and from 1863 to 1864. In 1849 John C. Birdwell married Adaline Burney Cunningham, and they resided a number of years at Mount Enterprise, Rusk County before moving to Flatswood, Nacogdoches County shortly before the Civil War. John served in Company H of the 17th Dismounted Cavalry and was captured at Arkansas Post on the Arkansas River. He died on January 6, 1869. A farmer, John Birdwell included instructions for running the farm in his absence in his letters written to his wife during the Civil War. Her letters report the progress of crops and livestock. The letters of both recount their hardships during the war as well as news of family and friends. Birdwell describes Confederate camp conditions depicting disease epidemics, food, music, gambling, funerals, weather, and ragged condition of the troops. He was not a slave holder and waxes bitter about the slave owners' causing the war then paying substitutes to fight for them. Most of his letters were written from Camp Nelson and Camp Hope, Arkansas ;

    1. Parthena J. of Tenn.
    2. Hello folks: While "surfing" I came across this item. Does anyone know whom Parthena J. Birdwell might have been ? Considering when her son was born, she must have been born prior to 1830 (possibly considerably earlier). "History of Colorado", edited by Wilbur Fisk Stone, published by The S. J. Clarke Publishing Co. (1918) Vol. II p.335-336 JAMES K. P. McCALLUM. Among the representatives of Denver's bar are men capable of crossing swords in forensic combat with the ablest members of the profession anywhere. Strong, capable and resourceful in the practice of law is James K. P. McCallum, who located in Denver in 1908 and has since made his home in this city. He was born in Davis county, Iowa, September 22, 1844, a son of Daniel and Parthena J. (Birdwell) McCallum, the latter a native of Tennessee, while the former was born in North Carolina. Both have now passed away. The father devoted his life to the occupation of farming and was very prominent in political circles. Removing to the west, he served as postmaster of Troy, Iowa, and passed away in 1890 at Helena, Montana.

    3. I was looking at some other web sites tonight and accidently "surfed into" a site of FLATTs from Jackson County, TN .. I found two FLATT marriages of BIRDWELL women (the marriages were probably in the 1890s or even perhaps the early 1900s) - the web site did not say. (1) James Whitfield FLATT (son of Issac Columbus FLATT Jr) married to a "Luna Birdwell" ... I highly suspect her name was "Lena" or "Lula" ... A possibility for her could be this: in 1880 Jackson County there was the widow Mary A. (Gaines) Birdwell and her children - her husband was Benjamin Franklin Birdwell born 1846 (son of the Joseph that was born 1803) ... Mary's children were Joseph B. (9) - Bell Z. (7) - William H. (4) and Luler A. (1) - is this Luna or Lula ? (2) James Dugglas FLATT (brother of James above) married to a "Ova Birdwell" ...... I have no idea who this one is or could be Anyone ??? 3. Sarah H. Birdwell was the daughter of John Birdwell and wife Mary Allen, and granddaughter of Old George. Sarah H.'s sister Elizabeth married Levi Isbell's brother James Isbell. Sarah is buried at Old Bethel Baptist Church, Dekalb County, AL. (near the Marshall County line), and a bronze Alabama Historical Society marker at the church cemetery states that she was among the first settlers of Madison Co., AL., 1805 (when the Birdwells settled there coming from Lincoln Co., TN) I find on the Internet that Mary Allen Birdwell is stated to be the daughter of Malcolm Allen and Margaret Henderson, although I have yet to find anyone with proof documenting this. (Anybody out there have the proof?) I have wondered if Sarah H. Birdwell's middle name could be HENDERSON. >From: [email protected] (Jerry Anderson) >To: [email protected] >Subject: Sarah Birdwell >Date: Sun, 30 Jan 2000 00:16:23 GMT > >I found this on a web site while wasting time today (wink) >Anyone belong to this Birdwell ????? > > BIRDWELL, Sarah H. > Birth : 14 FEB 1799 ,,TN > Death : 18 AUG 1876 ,Marshall,AL > >Marriage: 3 AUG 1816 in Huntsville,Madison,MS territory (later known >as AL) > Spouse: > > ISBELL, Levi > Birth : 14 NOV 1797 ,Sevier,TN > Death : 1 NOV 1876 ,Marshall,AL > ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. Velma Correction
    2. Velma: Thanks for adding to the debate on the identities of the Birdwell families in Jackson Co., Tennessee. I note at least one point in your data which you could correct. There were actually three men named Joseph Birdwell of apx. the same age, your information has combined two of these into one man. I will use the 1850 census data to illustrate this error. Mary Perry & Benjamin Birdwell (1765) did have a son born on 9-1-1809 whom they named Joseph Birdwell. However this was not the same Joseph found later on in Jackson & Smith Counties. The son of Mary Perry & Benjamin Birdwell (1765) was shown on the 1850 census still in Sullivan Co, TN. On page 115 there is the household of Rolan Birdwell age 39, also in this household are Mary age 78, Elizabeth 51, Jane 45, Nancy 43, & Joseph age 41. This is the widow of Benjamin Birdwell (1765) with her son Joseph (9-1-1809) and several more of her children. This same Joseph is then found in Sullivan Co. again in 1860 & 1870. There is not any evidence that Joseph (the son of Benjamin) ever had children, or lived outside of east Tennessee. At the same time, the 1850 census is showing another man named Joseph Birdwell (c1809) living over in Smith Co, Tennessee. This household on page 249 shows Joseph age 41, Elizabeth 39, Lucinda 18, Lavena 16, William 14, Syrena 12, Malvina 12, John 10, Marion 8, Sally 5, Amanda 3, & Johnson age 1. This Joseph (c1809) was apparently the same man listed in Jackson Co., Tennessee on the census in 1830, 1840, 1860, & 1870. He apparently died before 1880. As you can see this Joseph Birdwell was also born about 1809, yet he is certainly not the son of Mary Perry & Benjamin Birdwell (1765). While it is not proven just whom his parents were, Jerry Anderson & I feel the clues suggest he was the son of the William Birdwell (1772) in Jackson Co, Tennessee on the 1820 & 1830 census. Again, it is not proven but the clues suggest this was William Birdwell (2-10-1772) the son of “old” George Birdwell (c1721). Finally for those of you trying to keep track of all these folks, there was yet another Joseph Birdwell who lived in Tennesssee during this same era. This Joseph also appears to be listed in Jackson Co, Tennessee on the census in 1830, 1840, 1860, & 1870. This “third” Joseph was also over in Smith Co, for the 1850 census; Joseph Birdwell age 47 (c1803) a blacksmith, Jane 41, Elizabeth 18, Margaret J. 17, Phoeba J. 15, Mariah 14, George 12, Joseph 11, Mary 9, William 7, Benjamin 4, & Blake age 1. While it is not proven whom this Joseph’s parents were, Jerry Anderson & I suspect that this Joseph (c1803) was the son of the Margaret Birdwell listed as the head of a household in Jackson Co, Tennessee on the 1820 & 1830 census. I hope this helps everyone see how we had three separate men named Joseph Birdwell all living at apx. the same time (roughly 1800 to 1880). Unfortunately, the only one whose parents are proven was the Joseph in Sullivan Co. who was named in his father’s pension application. We have to rely on circumstantial evidence to determine the parents of the two who lived in Smith Co. and Jackson Co., Tennessee. Best wishes from snowy Montana Weldon

    3. Hi Rose--I have not written for awhile. Went to Hawaii with my son & family & came down with double pneumonia--that was 12-19-99. Just getting over it but it will be awhile before all my strength comes back (that is what they tell me) The following is what I received from Jeff & Erin Stevensonmailto:[email protected] They have given me permission to put it on the Birdwell-List. Jeff is a descendant of Robert and Mary Ann Dalton Birdwell. I will not start with ole George but will skip directly to Elizabeth who m. James Isbell: <Elizabeth Birdwell, d/o John, b 12-31-1797 in Sullivan Co. TN & d 7-10-1872 in Colbert Co. AL. M. (1) James Isbell 4-24-1813 in Madison Co. AL, s/o Wm. Isbell & Sarah Richardson. James b 10-5-1791 in TN & d. 6-4-1844 in Jackson Co. AL. She m. (2) John Conway abt 1847in Jackson Co. AL. The birth info for the children of James & Elizabeth Birdwell Isbell came from the Bible of James Isbell Jr. it was in the possession of James' daughter Minervia when it was copied by Mrs. Indiana Stanley, a d/o John Riley Isbell. Mrs. Stanley lived near Russellville, AL. on Rt 4 & gave this info to Rev. Sherman Isbell in 9-1980. The family of Elizabeth Birdwell Isbell were among the earliest settlers in madison Co. AL. Her father, John Birdwell, settled north of Huntsville in 1805. Young James Isbell & his brother Levi worked for John Birdwell before marrying John's daughters, Elizabeth & Sarah. James & Levi were born in TN. so they either came with the Birdwells or it is possible that their parents came at same time. Children of Elizabeth Birdwell & James Isbell are: 1. Mary Ann Isbell, b. 4-1-1816, Jackson Co. AL; d 1889, Jackson Co. AL. 2. William Birdwell Ibell, b 12-3-1818 3. John S Isbell b 11-25-1820 4. Sarah Manda Isbell, b 12-25-1822, d. 4-27-1830 5. Allen Isbell, b 3-23-1825, m Sarah J. Williams 6. Susan Isbell, b 1-18-1827, Jackson Co., AL; d 3-7-1892, Jackson Co. AL; m. William Jackson Murray, 9-27-1856 7. Margaret Isbell, b 3-24-1829, m. James Willis 8. Benjamin Isbell, b 5-6-1831 9. James Isbell, Jr. b 8-25-1833 10. Zachariah Isbell, b 6-25-1835, Jackson Co. AL; d 1864, Richmond, VA-prisoner of war; m. Susanna J. Culver, 12-20-1857 11. Elizabeth Isbell, b 1-18-1838, Jackson Co. AL; d 5-15-1865, Jackson Co. AL; m. Uriah Peters 12. Lucinda Isbell b 7-8-1840 13. Levi Isbell b 7-17-1842, Jackson Co. AL; d 12-12-1918, Gurley, Madison Co. AL; m. Rachel A. Rousseau, 6-12-1862, Madison Co., AL; b 8-7-1837, Madison Co. AL; d 8-1924, Madison Co. AL. Notes: Levi Isbell was the youngest child of James & Elizabeth Birdwell Isbell. His father James died when he was only 2 years old. His mother married for the second time (John Conway) before 1850 because they are found in the 1850 census of Jackson Co. AL. Elizabeth became a widow for the second time on 9-7-1853. Levi was handicaped by a hearing problem & he did not go into the service during the Civil War. They were very poor, although they did have some land. The land was sold in 1857 & proceeds divided among the heirs at which time Levi was 16. The Isbells were a religous bunch & many were preachers of the Baptist faith. The following are a few things that Bertha Ellen Isbell Sneed, one of the granddaughters told about them. it seems that the two children of Levi and Rachel that stayed in Alabama lived on the home place in houses close to the home place. Levi had prayer meetings at his house. Rachel Rousseau Isbell, Lelvi's wife was a good woman and never used bad words. She had a strong belief in what was right & wrong. She worked hard & kept a clean house. Her washing had to be as clean & white as labor & lye soap could make it. What ever Grandma did she did it well. She helped Ellen to want to live a clean life. Wild turkey were plentiful so Levi and his sons would trap them & when they got a wagon load they would nail planks across the wagon & take the turkeys to Gurly, AL. to sell. On the way if one of the turkeys stuck his head up between the planks, Reuben (one of the boys) would break his neck & they had turkey when they got home. He was sure his father, Levi didn't see him do it. Another way they earned money was by making broom & ax handles. SARAH H. Birdwell was born 2-14-1799 in Sullivan Co. TN & d 8-18-1876 in DeKalb Co. AL. She m. Levi Isbell, 8-3-1816 in Madison Co. AL, s/o William Isbell & Sarah Richardson. he was born 11-14-1797 in sevier Co., TN & d 11-1-1876 in DeKalb Co.
