Hello again, I thought that I had posted this earlier today yet I did not "receive" it while my two later postings have been receieved back to my email. So pardon me if you see this twice. I hope that those previous messages are helpful to someone. I would appreciate it if one of you could tell me where the older children of Joseph Birdwell (1819) (the son of Moses (1769)) were during the 1870 census. Joseph himself and most of his kids are still living in Johnson Co, IL at that time. However, his daughter Rebecca (c1849) and his sons John Henry (1843), Moses Franklin (1844), and Labran (c1846) were not listed in Johnson Co, Illinois during 1870. The May 19, 1869 letter from Josephs brother, Henry L. Birdwell (1826), stated that Rebecca and her husband (Hillery BOOZER) and Moses (Moses F. 1844) and family ... started to move to the southwest parte of Missouri .... Unfortunately, Henry didnt mention any town or county by name. I have found Moses Franklin on the 1880 census living in St. Clair Co, MO. However I'm unsure where he and the others were during 1870. Can anyone tell me where to find any of these three boys or their sister Rebeccas family ? Thanks, Weldon J. Birdwell
Here is the next family I unexpectedly encountered on an Illinois census. Note this is not the James (c1822) shown on the previous posting. While this man's lineage does not seem to be in question, his whereabouts after 1870 are. Does anyone know where he was in 1880 ? I have reviewed the Union County, IL census for 1880 and he apparently did not remain there. FYI: Union Co. is on the southern tip of the state. In 1870 his father's cousin Joseph (1819) was in the adjacent county (Johnson). However, it seems likely this was only a coincidence (neither man was living in Johnson Co, IL in 1880). Can anyone add to the information on this man or his family ? Thanks, Weldon in Montana JAMES M. BIRDWELL (c1832) { (3) Samuel (c1795), (2) George (1760), (1) George (c1720) } 1850 Fayette Co, TN: Census: listed in the household of Samuel (c1795). 1859 Cleburne Co, AR: Land: James M. patent 160 ac, 9N, 9W, Sec. 14. 1860 Van Buren Co, AR: Census: James age 28, with spouse & three kids. 1870 Union Co, IL: Census: James age 38, with spouse & five kids. BIRTH: James M. Birdwell is consistently shown as born in Tennessee about 1832 or 1833. The county is not known. Presumably his parents were Sarah BASHAW & Samuel Birdwell (c1795). While I don't have proof of this; James was in Sams household on 1850 census, in 1860 he also lived near him in Arkansas, and James also named his eldest son Samuel. MARRIAGE: James reportedly married Margaret M. BROWN on 5-6-1853 in Fayette Co, Tennessee. It is unclear if she is the same Margaret shown on the 1870 census. Howdy Gang: Here is the first of two families I found unexpectedly listed on the census in Illinois. I'm sending my summary sheet of info on this man. Please advise if you believe I have something listed incorrectly. JAMES BIRDWELL (1822) ?? (4) John (c1795), ?? (3) John (c1775), (2) Robert (c1750), (1) George (c1720) 1850 Giles Co, TN: Census: James (27), Mahala & three kids. 1870 Greene Co, IL: Census: James (48), Mahala & three kids. 1903 Rockbridge, IL: Death: His tombstone reads 1822 to 1903. BIRTH: His tombstone states James Birdwell was born in 1822. Census data concurs with this date and shows he was born in Tennessee. I have no proof ! - yet my best guess is that he was the son of the John Birdwell (c1795) found living in Giles Co, Tennessee in 1840 & 1850. I believe that same John was the one on the 1830 census in Madison Co, Alabama, and he (John) may be the son of John Birdwell (c1775). If so, James (1822) was probably born in Giles Co, Tennessee. MARRIAGE: James was married to Mahala (surname unknown) who was born in Tennessee during 1824. Tombstone information lists her death in 1906. It appears that one daughter and a granddaughter were named after her. MOVEMENTS: It is not clear where James was during the 1840 census. He does not appear to be living with the man I suspect is his father (John c.1795). Yet if the data on James children is correct, he should be found living somewhere in Tennessee during the mid 1840s. He is in Giles Co, Tennessee on the 1850 census. For now I am not sure where he was during 1860, though I know he was not listed in Greene Co, Illinois. However, the marriage of his daughter Susan Ann in Greene Co, Illinois on Jan. 15, 1862 suggest that he could be somewhere in Illinois at that time. Since he (and most of the others) had been buried in Greene Co, Illinois presumably James remained there from at least 1870 until his death in 1903. BURIAL: James, Mahala, Samuel E., William H., and Mahala J. were all buried at the Rives Cemetery near Rockbridge, Illinois (Greene County). NOTES ON THEIR CHILDREN: 1) Susan Ann Birdwell Born: c1844 in Tennessee Died: Before 1870 ? Marriage: Thomas MABERRY 1-15-1862 in Greene Co, Illinois. Children: Mahala MABERY (sic) ? born c.1864. Notes on Susan: Since her presumed child Mahala was with her parents in 1870, I am assuming she was dead. Her husband may be on the 1870 census living in another household. 2) Samuel E. Birdwell Born: 1845 in Tennessee Died: 1875 in Illinois Marriage & Children: none known. Notes on Samuel E.: I only have the 1850 & 1870 census data and his tombstone record. 3) William H. Birdwell Born: 1849 in Tennessee Died: 1883 in Illinois Marriage: Martha A. CANNEDY 12-18-1873 in Greene Co, Illinois. Children: Roscho ? c.1875, Oscar 1878, Edna Jane 1879. Notes on Wm.: It appears Martha remarried to Luther F. PLAIN in Macoupin Co, IL on 3-6-1883. Their daughter Edna married Elmer ELLIS in Jersey Co, IL on 3-12-1901. I wonder if his son Oscar 1878 was the Roscho on the 1880 census, or if Oscar died before 1880 ? William on 1880 census Macoupin Co. 4) Frances Birdwell Born: 1853 in Tennessee Died: unknown Marriages & Children: none known Notes: Since I only have the 1870 census for her, it's possible she Samuel E.s spouse instead. 5) Mahala J. Birdwell B: 1860 D: 1865 in Illinois Notes: Tombstone data is only evidence of her existence. Hey Gang, I received 3 pictures from Barbra Alexander. They are: Amanda Frances Thackston Birdwell wife of Temple S Birdwell Sadie Belle Birdwell Maggart daughter of George W Birdwell son of Temple Hattie Lee Birdwell Myers daughter of George W Birdwell If anyone wants these pics, please let Barbra or me know, and one of us will send them to you. And Barbra, thank you so much for sending them. Nikki and I will include them in Birdtracks as soon as we get that far. Weldon - Charles Bidwell died 1848 and his wife Martha died 1855. In Robertson County the following Rb-1632-245 BIDWELL, Martha (49), Charles M. (20), Josiah M. (18) Jacob (14), Bell G. (12), Abner F. (11), Martha V. (10), Theophilus CRUTCHER (21), Julia (17) my best guess ,,,, Julia was a daughter who married. As we know ... Hi Weldon--here are some more names that could be researched. I was checking in the Illinois area<http://www.usgennet.org/~alhnilus/stclair/ and found 19 BRIDWELL names under " Illinois Statewide Marriage Index 1763-1900. They are from the years of 1844 to 1896. Velma
Howdy Cousins: Jerrys posting about Abner F. BIDWELL, son of Charles BIDWELL, raises two interesting points: 1) Accurately listing our family in Tennessee 2) Were there Birdwells in Connecticut. First Tennessee. Coincidentally, Aggie Birdwell recently sent me a note in which she included some old material by the researcher Edyth R. Whitley regarding this Charles of Robertson & Montgomery Co, Tennessee. In this material Mrs. Whitley refers to this Charles as a grandson of our George Birdwell (c1720). She repeated refers to him as Charles BIRDWELL. However, a note by Hazie LeFevre indicates that she did not agree with this. Then the census data which Mrs. Jane Teal had shared with me show him to be a BIDWELL. So now that Jerry has shared this biography with us it appears that this old question has been answered. 1830 Robertson Co, Tenn. Charles Bidwell 11001101//03001 1840 Montgomery Co, TN page 272a Charles Bidwell 31100001//0201001 I do not have any 1850 info for him or his kids. 1860 Robertson Co, Tenn. pg 445 A.F. Bidwell 20 (male) & M.V. (female) 1860 Cheatam Co, Tenn. pg 26 C.M. Bidwell 30 (male) & M.L 26 (female) w/ kids So we see that Mrs. Whitley was (sloppy ?) in calling Charles a Birdwell when he wasnt. Obviously she had not researched this very carefully. He was clearly a BIDWELL, who we now learn had originally moved from Connecticut to Tennessee. Now regarding the Birdwell men shown in the early Connecticut records. I have wondered if they were named Birdwell, or if they were actually BEDWELL, BIDWELL, BODWELL, or BARDWELL instead. I have not yet researched those records so I cant say for sure which is correct. Yet the records in New England show several families with these other names. So it is quite possible that their names were misspelled (as Birdwell) on a few records. On the other hand, there seems to be enough records which show at least a few of these men consistently as BIRDWELL (or Burdwell). This needs to be researched in more detail. While it is no more likely than any of the other speculation, these Birdwell men in Connecticut could be the direct kin of our George Birdwell of Virginia. Is anyone ready to jump into that research project yet ? Regards, Weldon J. Birdwell
Hi--I had sent the address to check out Birdwell marriages in Illinois and today I checked the name Bridwell. I came on 19 Bridwell mar- riages between 1844 & 1896. Check out <http://www.usgennet.org/~alhnilus/stclair/ and then click on The Illinois State Marriage Index. It is located at the Illinois Archives'website, and the index covers marriages from 1763- 1900. Velma
Hi gang ... I find this interesting - I actually found it about a year ago but with all the other "stuff" going on, I decided to not throw it up for conversation ... Some of y'all may have already discussed this dude .... It is from the Cheatham County GOODSPEED - Cheatham County was formed from Dickson, Montgomery, Davidson and Robertson Counties, Tennessee in 1856 ... My Father's roots are there ... **************************************************************************** GOODSPEED PUBLISHING COMPANY BIOGRAPHICAL APPENDIX 1887 Abner F. BIDWELL was born in Tennessee October 10, 1839, son of Charles Bidwell, who was born in Connecticut in 1787, and is of English descent, a descendant of John Bidwell, who emigrated from England in the seventeenth century and died in 1683. When a young man the father of our subject came to Tennessee and finally located in Robertson County, where he made the acquaintance of Mrs. Martha (Binkley) Shaw, his future wife. She was a German by descent. and to them were born eight children. Those now living are Charles M., Belle G., Sarah B., Frey, Julia A. and Abner F., our subject. The father died in 1848 and the mother in 1855. Abner attended the common schools, the Liberty Academy at Springfield, and the East Tennessee University at Knoxville. In January, 1861, he located on his present farm of 400 acres, which is very pleasantly located on the Cheatham and Robertson County line. Pinnacle Rock may be seen from his residence and the bluffs which are covered with evergreens, cedar, laurel, and ivy. Mr. Bidwell was married in January, 1869, to Miss Mary F. Justice, daughter of Jack and Susan Justice, of Robertson Co. They are the parents of the following children: Emma F., Beuna M., Charles B., John F., Ruth M. (deceased), Paul B. and Martha M. Mr. Bidwell is a Democrat, md he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. ******************************************************************************* It is interesting to note, there was only 4 BIDWELL families in Tennesse in the 1840 census and only two in the 1850. GenForum put the surname 'Bidwell' in their data base and the first note was written April 1998 - a search for "abner" or "tennessee" did not produce any queries. Has anyone contacted any of the BIDWELL people on the net concerning connections .. www.bidwell.org. ??? I found a great land grant data address: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov They ask for your zip code & after you type that in, there are boxes to fill in. I only put the name of Birdwell in the first box, then went down to what states & clicked on ALL States and then on search & 3 pages came on the screen. It went back to Moses in AL in 1831, with lots of familiar names. Great site. Velma
List, I have just noticed that Ida Virginia Davis, b 17 Aug 1862, Barbour Co., AL married a John Birdwell of Heber Springs about Nov. 1886. They were in Bullit Co., KY when she died 31 Mar 1889. Daughter Bessie married Robert Grimmett after moving to Little Rock. Does anyone have this family and more descendants? Ida Virginia Davis was my gm Mary Stella Davis Cunningham's first cousin. Mary Stella was the daughter-in-law of Nancy Birdwell Cunningham. Hey Gang, How about posting any findings to the list? The ones that I have listed are: #4 John Henry m Oliva E. Harper, he is the s/o Joseph B. Birdwell and Mary Ann Phillips. They were found in the 1880 census of Blanco Co., Texas. #6 Rufus m/2 Sarah C. Meyers, b c 1851 in Tennessee, d 1932, 1880 census in Blount Co., Tennessee and 1900 in Monroe Co., Tennessee. Rufus was the son of Joshua Birdwell and Mary Jeans. His first wife was Elizabeth King. The Illinois marriage date for Sarah C. must be wrong, as Elizabeth had her last known child in 1863, and died 30 Sept 1874. Rufus and both wives are buried in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in McMinn Co., Tennessee. #7 Stephen m Demaris McMichael, he was also a s/o Joseph B. Birdwell and Mary Ann Phillips. He was in the 1880 Census of Travis Co., Texas, but died in 1885 in Bell Co., Texas. That's it, gang!! We need some more help. More has been added to Birdtracks. We sure could use some pictures and documents!! Some time ago I sent Rose a list of Birdwells who served in the Texas Confederacy. These were listed in "Texas Confederate Troops 1861-1865, Name Roster. Vol I" by Janet B. Hewett (ed). Wilmington NC, Bradfoot Publ Co, 1997. Vol II was the Unit Roster. She has asked me to identify what line they belong to and I can only identify one with certainty - Samuel H. - and one possibility -William G., his brother. I know that they with their older brothers and brothers-in-law served, but have no records for them. (sons of George, son of Joseph) Okay gang let's see how many you other researchers can identify for her. She would like to include this with the individual on our website. In fact, it would not hurt to include any war record with your data as this sometimes a little hard to locate for the earlier wars. Birdwell, Abraham M. 18th Inf. Co. D. Birdwell, Abraham S.
