    2. William D. Lindsey
    3. Dear Effie, I'm sorry to take so long to thank you for all the TX Birdwell information you've been posting. Is a busy time for me. I think I can identify the Thomas Birdwell who m. Miss S.D. ? in Bell Co. in 1877. He's Thomas, son of James and Alitha Leonard Birdwell. James was son of Moses, son of George. Miss S.D. is, I believe, Sarah Nunn, Thomas's second wife. My line is from James and Alitha's daughter Camilla, who married Ezekiel S. Green. Bill Lindsey

    3. I received an e-mail this A.M. from a Lucy Birdwell. She stated her father was John E. Birdwell III. She stated her grandfather was a John Birdwell who died in 1991 and who had married Genene Bateman and had 5 children, the oldest was her father John E. Birdwell III. She said her grandfather had 3 sisters, Arlene, Christine and Johnnie. They are all from Texas and were raised on a ranch in the panhandle. She said her grandfather was a successful businessman & rancher who lived in Lubbock most of his life, but lived in Austin later on and served on the TX. Water Commission. Her great-grandfather was John Birdwell and she thought his wife's maiden name was Golden. Anyone have any connections? Velma [email protected]

    1. Who is SOlomon Birdwell?
    2. Steve Roper
    3. Hi all. I have been stymied by a coincidence which has occurred, and am hoping someone may know who Solomon Birdwell is. As you may know, my line is John Birdwell of Giles Co TN (previously Sullivan CO) who was the son of Robert Birdwell and grandson of Old George. The query placed to the list by Velma, I thought was going to yeild another "lost" daughter of John Birdwell of Giles and his unknown wife. But seemingly not so. Zan Tippe Birdwell who married Andrew Jackson BOLING was not the daughter of John. She was born in 1864 and died 1940 and is buried in Tate Co MS in the CRockett Cemetery. Her father was Solomon Birdwell. I still think somehow she is connected to my family because of the given name ZANTIPPE. This name was used by my ancestor, Mary Birdwell (McCormack Phelps) for her firstborn daughter with 2nd husband Josiah Phelps. It was also used by Mary's sister Matilda Birdwell DEAVERS for her 2nd daughter, Zantippe B. AGnes Deavers. It is spelled Xantippe and Zantippe. It is so unusual I feel Solomon must be connected to the family of John. Can anyone shed light? Regina Roper

    1. Birdwells in Texas
    2. Effie: Thanks for pouring through more Texas records for us ! I can name a few of the folks you’ve listed. As always, if anyone disagrees with these identities please feel free to correct me. HOPKINS County, Texas 1) Nancy Wright Birdwell (born 4-22-1830, a daughter of Moses 1769). 2) Henry Landers Birdwell (born 1-11-1826, a son of Moses 1769). 3) Sariah “Sary” S. Birdwell (born abt. 1826, daughter of George W. (1791), son of Moses 1769). Note: Other records show her spouse was Silvanus BEAN. LAMAR County, Texas 4) M. Birdwell, this was Martha Birdwell (born abt. 1825, daughter of George W. (1791), son of Moses 1769). 5) Wm. Birdwell, this was William B. Birdwell (born abt. 1822, son of George W. (1791), son of Moses 1769). Note: His spouse was Malinda A. MOORE. RUSK County, Texas 6) Andrew Birdwell (born abt. 1822, son of George (c1794), son of Joseph 1767). WALKER County, Texas 7) Thomas G., this was Thomas Garner Birdwell. (born abt. 1815, son of George W. (1791), son of Moses 1769). Note: His spouse was Elizabeth Jane MOORE, daughter of William Moore. This marriage was not in Walker County on the date shown, but was actually held in Lamar County, Texas on June 2, 1843. Another Thomas G. Birdwell (Thomas Gaines Birdwell c1804) had lived in Walker Co, Texas yet there is no known marriage between him and a MOORE. I hope that some of you can identify more of these folks which Effie found for us. Weldon J. Birdwell

    2. Velma: This info was gathered off of the web (except the census which I copied from microfilm). Therefore, I can't vouch for the accuracy of the dates or the spelling. Nor can I say if these are Sally Walker’s folks. However, these might be some good leads for her to pursue. 1860 UNION Co, ARK 8-10-1860 page 266 #339 BAILEY, Henry (c1829) 31, m, farm, $5000 GA ? or TN ? Elizabeth 29 Tenn. Jasper 6 Ark. M. E. ? 5, f, Ark Jeremiah ? 2, Ark Matilda 1, Ark Mary 60, Georgia BIRDWELL, William (c1839) 21, m, laborer, Georgia illiterate Note: George Birdwell’s (1760) son, Andrew Birdwell (c1790), had a son named William Birdwell who was born in Tennessee about 1837. Andrew died before 1850. His widow Elizabeth H. had their family in northern Mississippi in 1850. By the 1860 census it appears that Elizabeth and at least some of their children had moved to White Co, Arkansas. So it is not proven, yet it is possible that this William in Union Co, Arkansas might be her son. It doesn’t account for the Georgia birth shown on this Arkansas census. That was either a mistake or this William is someone else. The 1870 census may help answer this. White Co, Arkansas Marriages: 8-23-1868 Wm. W. Birdwell to Margaret M. HENY. Note: Was this a typo for HUEY ? 10-4-1889 Lee A. Birdwell to Katie BULLON. Book I. Note: Could this “Lee A.” be the same as Sally’s, Robert Lee Birdwell ? 9-20-1891 Gineva Birdwell to Wm. C. CONLEY. Book J. “She 19 (c1872) of West Point ... he 21 of Judsonia” Note: Was this an earlier marriage for Genevra below ? 11-28-1897 Genevra Cassandra Birdwell to John E.F. CASTLE. Sally Walker stated “dau. of Margaret Huey & Wm Birdwell” This apparent tie in between Sally Walker’s folks to White Co, Arkansas and that of the descendants of Andrew Birdwell (c1790) would lead me to suspect that his son William is her man. Yet I stress this is no more than my speculation. And this may or may not be the same William listed in Union County during 1860. Weldon J. Birdwell

Anyone have any information. Wm. W. was born in TN but married and died in Arkansas & his 3 children were also born in Ark. Velma [email protected]

    1. Correction
    2. I just now noticed that I passed along some incorrect information in my summary on James Birdwell (1822 to 1903) “of Giles Co, TN & Greene Co, IL”. I am sorry, this is confusing enough without me making it more difficult with this error. I had typed that up in a hurry and got sloppy... In the paragraph MOVEMENTS I had written “It is not clear where James was during the 1840 census”. This is incorrect. It is clear that he is the James Birdwell listed with his own household in Giles Co, Tennessee on the 1840 census. According to my Tennessee census notes from Mrs. Jane Teal he was listed on page 90; 1840 Giles Co, TN: James Birdwell 0001 / 0001. This shows a James Birdwell age 15 to 20 (born 1820 to 1825 !) with a female age 15 to 20 (born 1820 to 1825). Their tombstone info in Illinois states James was born 1822, and Mahala in 1824. As posted earlier, the 1850 census for Giles Co, Tennessee also listed this James Birdwell with his spouse and three children; 1850 Giles Co, TN: James Birdwell 27 (c1823) Mahala 24 (c1826) Susan Ann 6 (c1844) Samuel E. 3 (c1847) William H. 1 (c1849) It was during the 1860 census that I am uncertain of their whereabouts. They were not listed in Giles Co, TN nor were they shown yet in Greene Co, Illinois. I did make the comment that they might be found somewhere else in Illinois in 1860 since their daughter’s marriage was there in January 1862. Again, as posted earlier, James Birdwell was on the 1870 census in Greene Co, Illinois. If anyone does know where to find them in 1860 please pass it along to the list. PARENTS: Regarding the parents of this James Birdwell (1822 to 1903); I know that some lists show his parents as Ellen Smith & Joseph R. “Joel” Birdwell (c1805). I strongly suspect that this belief is incorrect. While I do not have proof of his parents, the census evidence does not support Joseph R. Birdwell (c1805) as the father of James Birdwell (1822). 1830 census in Giles Co, TN: Joseph R. Birdwell 1001 / 20001 This shows Joseph R. “Joel” with one son and two girls under age 5 (born 1825 to 1830). Keep in mind that both his tombstone and the later census concur that James was born in 1822. 1840 census in Giles Co, TN: Joseph Birdwell 0110001 / 2120001 This shows Joseph “Joel” still has his eldest son age 10 to 15 (born 1825 to 1830) at home. Now since this same 1840 census for Giles Co. is also listing James Birdwell (1822) in a household of his own we seem to have a separate man as the eldest son of Joseph. So while the parents of James Birdwell (1822) are still a matter of debate, it does seem clear that James was not the son of Joseph R. “Joel” Birdwell (c1805). While I do not have proof, I believe this eldest son of Joseph was the Patrick Birdwell age 21 (born 1829) who was listed near Joseph in Giles Co, TN on the 1850 census. Does anyone have documentation for that belief ? If anyone cares to explore this further I can present the case why I believe that James Birdwell (1822) was most likely the son of the John Birdwell / Birtwell (sic) (c1795) who was in Giles County on the 1840 & 1850 census. Hope this helps clear up any confusion I may have caused. I know a few of you are descendants of Joseph Birdwell (c1805). So please don’t be shy, let me know if you believe I have it wrong about James not being the son of Joseph. I would welcome any corrections. Weldon J. Birdwell

    1. Melvina Birdwell
    2. Jerry Anderson
    3. Hi gang - I received an email on Thursday from a Paul Gentry who claims to be descended from Henderson Gentry - the son of Rebecca Brown and Thomas Gentry ... Rebecca, he claims, was the first child (born abt 1827)of Henderson Brown and Melvina Birdwell ... This could very well be the case - We only have a record of Melvina and Henderson's children starting with William who was born abt 1830 .. Jerry From: Paul Gentry <[email protected]> Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 08:40:42 -0600 Rebeckah Brown Gentry Daughter of Henderson and Melvian Birdwell Brown was born ca. 1827. Look at the 1850 jackson Co., TN census where you can look up Rebecca Gentry age 23. That is her. The three year old child is Henderson Brown Gentry, my GG-grandfather. There is no doubt that Rebeckha (spelled on her tombstone) is Henderson Browns daughter. Paul Gentry, Henderson and Melvina Brown's GGGG-grandson.

    1. George W. (c1810)
    2. Well while I'm at it ... here is one more Birdwell family in Illinois census data. Please feel free to jump in with anything else you can add ! Can anyone identify this George W. Birdwell who was living in Schuyler Co, IL during the 1850 census ? Or do any of you know what became of his son John W. (c1838) who may also be the man shown as William Birdwell (c1839) on the 1860 census ? Weldon J. Birdwell, in Montana 1850 Schuyler Co, IL Browning twp, 11-6-1850, #0442916 pg 420 #2/3 George W. Can we find George on the 1840 census ( in MO ?) & possibly 1830 ( in TN ?) Appears to have died prior to 1860. So probate, deeds, taxes, ect ... might be the only way to find more about him. 1860 Schuyler Co, IL Rushville twp, page 14 line 8 #103 Samuel R. LOWRY 50 (c1810) Ireland Malinda LOWRY 40 (c1820) “S. In adjacent Cass Co, IL, a 7-19-1860 marriage “Mrs. Malinda Birdwell” to Sam Lowry. Almost certainly this was the same Malinda from 1850, so was this William (c.1839) also the same as John W. Birdwell (c1838) of 1850 ?

    1. William H. (1849)
    2. It is odd but I see my original message on Joseph has now been received after my later postings were ... apparently the sequence in which I sent them does not matter ? I also noticed that in the earlier posting for "Giles & Illinois" I had referred to some other census data which wasn't actually included in the earlier posting. So here is the 1880 census data for William H. Birdwell (1849), the son of James Birdwell (1822), and a few notes on his wife & children. 1880 Macoupin Co, IL W. Mound twp, 6-1-1880, pg 400b #56 W. Macoupin Co. birth records; 1878 “Oscar Burdwell”, 1879 “Edna Jane Birdwell”, parents of both Wm. H. & Martha. Burial in Rives Cemetery near Rockbridge, IL (Greene Co) has a William Birdwell (b: 1849 d: 1883). Macoupin Co. marriage 3-6-1883 “Mrs. Martha A. Birdwell” to Luther F. PLAIN. I wonder if William had any probate records, or if a will was filed ?
