Hello Cousins: Last year we had a few postings about a William Birdwell who was hung in 1823 in Lawrence Co, Alabama. I have found some new information on this man. Awhile back I reviewed some microfilm of the Alabama Republican, a weekly newspaper published in Huntsville, Alabama at that time. I found these two references to William; The issue dated 4-11-1823 noted that four prisoners had escaped on Sunday evening, 4-6-1823. Here is what they had on our mystery Birdwell; William Birdwell, recently convicted of murder in Lawrence county, aged 57, 5 feet 7 inches high, square built, and fleshy; has short grey hair, has five feet of chain attached to one ancle, rather a florid countenance. Subsequent weeks had a similar notice published offering a $25 reward for his capture, until the issue dated 7-4-1823 which had the following item; Wm. Birdwell, convicted of murder in Lawrence county in March last, and who broke jail in Huntsville while under sentence of death, has we understand been apprehended in Tennessee and confined. What is significant in these items is that William Birdwells age was recorded. William was aged 57 in April 1823. So he was born in 1766 or 1765. This indicates that the William hung was older than the William who was the son of George Birdwell (c1720-1781). Georges son William had his birth date recorded in the family Bible as Feb. 10, 1772. In turn, this supports the long held idea that William, the son of George, was the man on the Jackson Co, Tennessee census in 1820 and 1830. This also fits with another theory a few of us have. For quite awhile some of us have believed that Robert Birdwell (c.1750-1815) was born before 1750. Roberts year of birth has never been documented and circa 1750 has just been a generally accepted guess. There is a circumstantial trail which strongly suggests the William hung in Alabama was Roberts son. If William was born in 1766, and he was Roberts son, then Robert was probably born during the 1740s. Regarding the William Birdwell hung in 1823. It would certainly be nice to confirm his identity and learn more about him. If any of you are interested in exploring this question perhaps there are other early newspapers with some more written accounts. If one of you has access to a good library the periods of these events were as follows: The murder occurred near Lambs Ferry in Lauderdale Co, Alabama during April 1822. Williams trial was held in Lawrence Co, Alabama from Sept. 1822 through March 1823. The newspaper I found covered the period of his escape. Then his capture was somewhere in Tennessee between April and July of 1823. Finally his sentence was carried out in Lawrence Co, Alabama in October 1823. So if there are any surviving newspapers from these areas then they should be reviewed for more information. It should also be determined what court records from these counties have survived. Our answers may be out there in print just waiting for us to uncover them. Are you feeling lucky ? I'll bet there is more to be found when we look. Weldon J. Birdwell, in Montana

Does anyone know the Harry Birdwell who is vice president of Oklahoma State University and who spoke at the recent memorial service for the recent tragedy? If so, which family does he come from? Thanks! Barbara Mann
Does anyone know of any proof for the maiden name of Elizabeth "Betsy" Birdwell, wife of William Birdwell? William, born in 1772, came from East Tennessee to Jackson County. He is on the 1820 Jackson County census. Betsy lived to be over 100 years old. I was told back in the early 1980s that she may have been a LeFevre but I've never found any proof or even a source for the information except through a family member. Was Betsy an Indian? I would love to "talk" to anyone who knows more about William and Betsy. Best wishes, Pat Elder "I care not much for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it." Hey Gang, Haven't written to all of you in a long time, had a "virus" over the holidays, which wiped out a lot of my info, had a loaner computer for a time, but now am back up and running, and "virus" free. I've been adding files to BT for the last week, so if any of you have info that you want to add, please send it on. Also, I'm going to the Chattanooga Library on Wednesday and Thursday, so if there is anything that you want me to look up, please let me know. And it doesn't have to be just for the direct Birdwell family. I would love to hear from all of you, so that I can get you back in my address book. Have a great day Rose

Has anyone on the list ever heard this story? If so who was this Birdwell? This story was sent to me years ago and I had forgotten about it, I found it today while I was cleaning out some files. "My Granny told me a story about a Birdwell that was hung for murder right after the Civil War. That while this Birdwell was off fighting, some soldiers (I think Yankee) came by his home and killed his wife and daughter. When the war was over and he had returned home, some of the returning soldiers stopped by his house for a drink of water. He was chopping wood at the time, he and the soldiers got to talking about some of the awful things they had seen and done during the war and one of them told him about killing a couple of women in that area. The Birdwell knew it was his wife and daughter he was talking about. He chopped him in the head with the axe. The soldiers had taken his daughter, she was pregnant, and cut her open and hung her and the baby like they were cleaning hogs." Linda Old Genealogists Never Die they just lose their Census

My friend, Alica Anderson, helped me with Birdwell censuses a few years ago, and saved all the paperwork, and has made a site of Just Censuses. Thank you, Alica.
