    2. Lou Parris
    3. Please excuse the way I am sending this if it's not right. I am new to the list and did not find any instructions about how to post to a thread. If someone can help, I'd appreciate it. I was browsing the archives and noted that back in November 2000 there was a request for information about Virginia Rothwell Birdwell from Phyllis Hindenliter by way of Rose Birdwell. If the person who inquired is still interested, I know a little about her. She was Virginia Mae (or May) Rothwell, daughter of Tal F. Rothwell and ? Lee. (I don't know her mother's name - only knew her as Mimi - my friend's grandmother. ) My friend's mother was Virginia Mae's older sister, Elizabeth. My friend went to live with Virginia Mae & Mack when Elizabeth died about 1947-1949. The Rothwells were rich folks in Beaumont. Actually it was "Mimi" Lee Rothwell who was the rich one. Her father was Thomas P. Lee, of the Yount Lee Oil Company - one of the second boom Spindletop oil companies. Her sister Faustine married Glen McCarthy, the famous wildcatter. I don't know whether the Mann name is associated with the Lee line or the Rothwell line. I would expect the Beaumont genealogy library (The Tyrrell Historical Library, I think it is) has a good bit of information about the Rothwells and Lees as they were very well known. Virginia Mae was first married to ? Cowan. Don't know his name or what happened to that marriage, but they had two sons. Later she married Mack Birdwell (a some kind of cousin - but not close - of my father's) and they had a son and a daughter. If the person who inquired would like to contact me, I have a few more details but know nothing about any Manns in the family. 2. Effie Birdwell
    3. I have received a request for information on a G. F. Birdwell approximate age in 50's. He is supposed to have lived or be living in Beaumont, Texas. I do not have this current of records on our Birdwell line in Texas. Can anyone help? He was married to her aunt. I kinda guess that the G. F. might stand for George Franklin, since we have these names running through all the descendants. I know that one son of Andrew Birdwell - Frank lived in that area as I worked with one of the descendants at Texas City and was able to compare notes with him. If you have any information that would help her, e-mail address is Nathelle Decker, [email protected] Effie

    1. John (c1720)
    2. Howdy Barbara: The John & Lucy you ask about were some of the Stafford Co, VA family named BRIDwell. Several items confirm that "Bridwell" was the proper spelling of their surname. Some believe our George Birdwell may have originated from this same general family. However, there is no evidence supporting this theory. So several others doubt our George was connected with the Bridwell's or with Stafford Co, VA. FYI: I believe the son Simon you noted was the same one who was the Revolutionary War Vet. If I remember right, he and his family are later found around Lexington, KY. Keep us posted, Weldon J. Birdwell, in Montana

    2. Can anyone tie into "Old George's" bunch the John and Lucy Birdwell shown in the Overwharton Parish Records of Stafford County, VA? They had a daughter Mary on June 19, 1745, and a son Simon on August 11, 1757. Thanks! Barbara Mann

    1. Sarah Birdwell Murry
    2. Barbra
    3. I copied this from another JACKSON-CLAY-OVERTON-CO-TN-L Can anyone tell me what happened to Sarah (BIRDWELL) MURRAY, the wife of James MURRAY, after the 1900 Clay County, Tennessee Census? That's the last time I ever saw of her...She had three children back then and was listed as a "widow". James MURRAY does not show up in that record. In fact, on the 1870 Monroe County, Kentucky Census, James does not show then. Sarah is listed as the head-of-household and a "farmeress" with a few children: Barbara age 22; Elizabeth age 16; and possibly a grandchild, Amanda age 2. If I can't find James MURRAY, I would like to know what happened to Sarah. Some children had grown up, gotten married. Did she move to live with one of them? I know of one son, George W. MURRAY, who married Sarah A. COPASS, the daughter of Thomas H. COPASS and Nancy J. GULLEY. This family moved after the 1910 Clay County, Tennessee Census, to Weaver, Williamson County, Illinois, in Southern Illinois, near Herrin. This particular MURRAY family (James and Sarah BIRDWELL MURRAY) moved back and forth from Clay County, Tennessee to Monroe County, Kentucky...Children born to James and Sarah were: A. John Alexander "Elick" MURRAY, born 23 December, 1841, in Washington County, Tennessee, and died 8 October, 1909. He married to Teany Angeline COPASS about 1867. He served in the Civil war in the Union 5th Kentucky Cavalry, Comapny K from 1861 to May, 1865. John and Teany are buried in the Browning Cemetery in Clay County, Tennessee. B. William P. MURRAY, born about 1843, in Kentucky. C. Barbara Jarrot MURRAY, born about 1847. D. Samuel F. MURRAY, born 1 July, 1848, and died 20 January, 1923. He married to Lucinda Elizabeth VINSON on 19 January, 1881. Lucinda was born 10 June, 1859, and died 23 September, 1929. On the 1890 Clay County, Tennessee Census, Samuel MURRAY is shown as a "boarder" in the household of William P. HATCHER. E. George W. MURRAY, born in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee, on 25 August, 1850, and died 28 October, 1928, in Weaver, Williamson County, Illinois. He married Sarah A. Copass in Clay County, Tennessee, on 29 March, 1873. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas H. COPASS and Nancy J. GULLEY. Sarah was born in September, 1849, at Red Boiling Springs, Macon County, Tennessee, and died in Herrin, Williamson County, Illinois, in 1931. George worked at the Old Ben Coal Corporation in or near Herrin. They had Franklin, Milton, Hova Turner, Nancy Rendie, Benton E., and Shadrach William "Shade" MURRAY. George W. and Sarah A. (COPASS) MURRAY are buried in the Herrin City Cemetery, in Herrin, Williamson County, Illinois. F. Elizabeth E. MURRAY, born 15 May, 1853, in Monroe County, Kentucky. She married to Samuel T. SMITH on 17 December, 1872, in Clay County, Tennessee. The Monroe County, Kentucky Vital Statistics show Elizabeth as being born in September, 1852 (Samuel T. SMITH also listed as "James T. SMITH" in Clay County, Tennessee Marriage Record). Samuel and Elizabeth buried in Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Clay County, Tennessee. G. Thomas MURRAY, born 4 November, 1855, in Monroe County, Kentucky, and died 17 July, 1937. He married to Mary Meadie WILSON on 20 June, 1880. Mary Meadie WILSON was born 17 October, 1863, and died 8 November, 1951. On the 1852 and 1853 Monroe County, Kentucky Tax List, there appears James MURRAY with three children ages 5 to 16. On the 1854 Monroe County, Kentucky Tax List, James MURRAY has livestock and four children ages 4 to 16. James MURRAY is not listed on the 1855 or 1856 Monroe County, Kentucky Tax Lists. The 1850 Monroe County, Kentucky Census shows a "Jarrot" MURRAY born in Kentucky. The 1860 Census lists B.J. and G.W. born in in Kentucky. The 1870 Monroe County, Kentucky Census lists Barbary J. and George W. born in Tennessee...The 1900 lists Samuel MURRAY born in Tennessee... If you are descended from ANY of these children of James and Sarah (BIRDWELL) MURRAY, please, contact me... Sam D. Lawson [email protected]

    1. RE: Mary Birdwell 1767
    2. I thought I'd sent this earlier but I'm not sure if it actually went. So pardon me if this does eventually come through twice... Renee: It is not known whom this Mary Birdwell was, yet she could easily be either a descendant of, our at least related to, our George Birdwell (c1720-1781) of Botetourt Co, VA & Sullivan Co, TN. It is Not Proven but seems quite possible that Mary was a daughter of Robert Birdwell (c1740’s-1815), the eldest son of George (c1720). Again, it is not proven that this Mary Birdwell was a daughter of Robert Birdwell. However, the following information given to me Aggie Birdwell & Jane Teal demonstrates that there were connections between the families of Robert BIRDWELL and a John CHESTER over a period of several decades. March 1792 John CHESTER & John SMITH proved a deed dated 3-19-1791 for 50 acres of land sold by Patrick SHEALDS to Robert BIRDWELL. (Sullivan Co, Tennessee. Book 2, pg 519). 11-5-1810 Robert BIRDWELL reportedly sold a female slave to John CHESTER 7-25-1816 “I, John CHESTER will see that John BIRDWELL will deliver to Charles JONES title to the following land, near the old Crawford place.” (Sullivan Co, Tennessee. Court Records Book 7, page 280). [This item regarded the disposition of 20 acres of land owned by the estate of Robert Birdwell (c1740’s-1815). John Birdwell of Giles Co, Tennessee was administrator of his estate. This John Birdwell (c1775) is believed to be a son of Robert Birdwell (c1740’s-1815) ]. 3-11-1825 “John BIRDWELL, adm. of John CHESTER dec’d, filed his accounts, final settlement. Hearing set 3rd Monday in April 1825.” (Limestone Co, Alabama. Orphan’s Court Minutes 1824-25. page 13). [This is believed to be the same John Birdwell (c1775) of Giles Co, TN, the son of Robert (c1740’s). It is unclear who this John Chester was, perhaps the son of John Sr. ? If Mary Birdwell Chester was Robert’s daughter then John Birdwell (c1775) would be an uncle to John Chester Jr..] So while Mary’s identity is certainly not determined it is certain that some John CHESTER (or two men named John Chester) were associated with Robert BIRDWELL (c1740’s) and his presumed son John BIRDWELL (c1775). I hope this is helpful. I’ll send you a few more odds and ends on what was in my file for Mary. Regards, Weldon J. Birdwell, in Montana

    3. Hey Gang, I've received the following from Bobbye Hood, and wanted to pass it on. I know that you all might not think that this if proper for a surname forum, but I felt that this is an issue that we all need to stand up to. Thank you for your patience Rose Just received your e-mail on the Confederate Flags and Statues. We are really having a time of it here in Texas. The NAACP has had such influence in our state that the Governor Bush crepted in the night and removed two plaques from the Supreme Court Building of Texas because they had the Battle Jack and General Robert Edward Lee on them. This building was built with Confederate Pension Money. Now the Senate is trying to pass a bill that will remove the statues of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and General A. S. Johnston from the University of Texas. We need support from all of you. If you are interested I can give you some addresses and e-mails that might help our cause. We southerners are under attack and we are being erased from history. **I asked her if I could pass this on** You Bet!! We need all the support we can get. My ancestor Joseph Abraham Birdwell was a Confederate soldier and all of his brothers were. Most of the Birdwells were Confederate. We need all the Birdwells we can muster. Check out this web site and you will get more information on what we must do to keep our Southern Heritage. http://www.sierratimes.com J.J. Johnson is a great African American and is on our side. 1. Joe (1819) & Henry L (1826)
    2. Howdy: I've been working with someone to identify Edward C. Birdwell (c1873). He and his brother Joseph B. (c1876) were living together on the 1900 census in Austin, Texas (Travis Co.). Do any of you know who their parents were ? The trail seems to point towards them being descendents of either Mary & Joseph Birdwell (1819) or Cynthia & Henry L. Birdwell (1826) [these two brothers were sons of Moses Birdwell (1769-c1849)]. By chance do any of you have an accurate list of the children of Joseph Birdwell (1819), and / or the children of Henry L. Birdwell (1826). Your help would be appreciated. Thanks, Weldon J.
