Betty: Your interesting find of an "Isaac BIRDWELL, of Farmington" in 1754 would warrant a closer look. This Susquehannah Company, was apparently a land company based out of Hartford, Connecticut. Since there were dozens of families there descended from an early settler named BIDWELL, it is likely that this Isaac was also a BIDWELL rather than a BIRDWELL. However, that may not be the case. From the little bit of research I've done on New England we clearly have a John BIRDWELL living in Hartford from about 1740 onwards. He had some children with at least one son living to be an adult. If this Isaac was in fact a BIRDWELL he is probably too old to be a son, but he could be a brother to this John Birdwell. Yet an error for BIDWELL would be the most likely answer. The 1790 census for CT lists three BIRDWELL families. I've found evidence that two of those three were named BIDWELL, and their census entries were in error. So far, John Birdwell is the only one who has held up to research. The question is still wide open, but the origin of our George Birdwell of Virginia just might be found in New England. Thanks for sharing your find. Weldon J. Birdwell, in Montana

William's wife is listed as Betsy on the 1850 Jackson County census. She is also called Betsy on a life insurance application of her grandson, Marshall Franklin Spurlock. I don't have anything giving her maiden name, but if this is the same Joseph who was a brother to Mary "Polly" Ann Birdwell Spurlock, then her mother's name was Betsy and his father's name was William Birdwell. Would love to find out how the LeFevre name got started in all this. Does anyone know? Best wishes, Pat Elder "I care not much for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it." Hey Gang, finally have a new modem, so am again..hopefully for good...up and running. I've added new pictures to Articles, in both pictures and tombstones, contributed by Vera Luce and Angela Birdwell Marberry. Vera also sent a couple of pics of an unknown family, she thinks that they are Birdwell's. I have put them in "pictures". Please take a look and see if you can identify them. I am thinking that they are Benjamin Franklin "Frank" & Adlissey Wheeler Birdwell. He is the only Birdwell that I know of that lost his limbs in the war, but...from reports, it was only 1 arm, and this man looks like he has both arms gone. So....if anyone has any clues, could you please let us know. I'm sure looking forward to meeting a lot of you at the reunion. Regarding the Billingsley-Birdwell connections: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mccausland&id=I2960 I don't see how William Polk Billingsley was related to James Billingsley, but since they both married Birdwell sisters, they must be somehow related. Maybe I need to study it more carefully. Also, there was an Elizabeth Billingsley (b.1776) who married a Birdwell and also came to Jackson Co, TN: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jackamoney&id=I09345 http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=davemcc&id=I640 http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dougwmc&id=I0174 http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dlvc&id=I3530 >From: Jerry Anderson <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: A new cousin >Date: Mon, 21 May 2001 10:54:44 -0500 Velma - there is no doubt about the parents of Joseph Marion Birdwell. They were Joseph (born 1809, not the one born 1803) ... Joseph Marion went by "Marion" ... I have a picture of him at an advanced age at a family reunion (taken around 1903) and the reunion is at his brothers' place - John J. Birdwell, my great great grandfather ... Let me sepearate the two Josephs for you: Joseph Birdwell (b. 1809and died after 1870 but before 1880) married to Elizabeth Chaffin (b 11 Apr 1811 died 7 Sep 1901) Their Children: Lucinda (b abt 1832 -believed to md John Petty) Louverna (b abt 1834 - md to James Billingsley)************ William C. (b 1836 - married ****Feraby Jackson) Serena (b abt 1838 - I think she md Joseph Jones) Melvina (b abt 1839 - nothing else known about her) John J. (1840-1915 ... married Mariah Kirby) Joseph Marion (1842-1911 ... married twice) Sarah (b abt 1843 - married Wm H. Flatt) Amanda Ruth (b abt 1848 - married Wm Ragland) Johnson (1849 - 1860) George W. (1849 - ?? married Samantha E. Jackson Mary J. (b abt 1852 - married Wm Polk Billingsley)************ Joseph Birdwell born 13 Mar 1803 and died in Clay County Tenn on 12 Aug 1870 ... he married Elizabeth Jane (Thaxton?) born 12 Mar 1809 and died Clay County on 14 Nov 1884 Their Children: Temple (b 12 Dec 1827 in ALABAMA ...) Elizabeth (b 9 Oct 1829 in ALABAMA) Margaret Joanna (b 9 Jan 1832 in TENNESSEE) Phoebe Jane (b 9 Sep 1833 in TN) Mariah (b 5 May 1835 in TN) George W. (b 20 Feb 1836in TN) Joseph, Jr. (b18 Mar 1839 in TN) Willima (b 5 Apr 1844 in TN) Benjamin Franklin (b 18 May 1846 in TN) Blake Thaxton (b 4 Jan 1849 in TN) Walter Birdwell and I both belive the above Joseph Birdwll (born 1803) was the son of this mysterious Birdwell who was married to Margaret McKaughan (she ended up in Clarksville in the 1830s). We also think the "mysterious" Birdwell was the William that was hanged in Alabama. But, family tradition of Margaret McKaughan say her husband was - ready for this - Joseph Birdwell !! but, we have found no other Joseph Birdwells in the area at that time. One thing that always made the "two Josephs" confusing, both lived in Smith County 1840s to early 1850s, then both moved to Jackson County for the next 15 - 20 years ... Hope This Helps ... Ray ... >I don't see how William Polk Billingsley was related to James Billingsley, >but since they both married Birdwell sisters, they must be somehow related. >Maybe I need to study it more carefully. James was Polk's uncle ... William Polk Billingsley was the son of William H. and Sarah Ann (FOX) Billingsley ... > >Also, there was an Elizabeth Billingsley (b.1776) who married a Birdwell and >also came to Jackson Co, TN: > Now, that *IS* interesting ... Very interesting. I need to study that. Jerry
