Hey Gang, I have a couple of queries for you. 1-Does anyone know who Larry and Vesta V. Birdwell were? They are in Vol 4, page 253 of the Cass Co., Texas Cemetery Records. 2-Does anyone know who Law Birdwell and Elizabeth Carver were? They were married 19 December 1853 in Smith Co., Texas. I have also put Kentucky Death Index Records in the Articles section of BT, along with the DOB and SSN of the individuals. If anyone has any more information on the people that have "circa" birthdates, please contact me. I have also added some more obits to the Obit section of Articles. Hey Gang, There are some new articles added to BT. Been going thru all my old email, trying to delete to get some more memory, and found stuff to put in "Articles". I'll be adding more to it this weekend, so keep checking back. Hi Rose, You asked who Nancy's parents were--I wish I knew! I can't find anything definitive on her since 4 of George's descendants had daughter's named Nancy. Thomas Hagan married Nancy Birdwell, as you know, in Washington Co. TN in 1801. He had only come to TN 1-2 years before. They're children were Mariah C., most probably born 1814 in KY and William B., b 12/9/1810 in KY. He is my gggrandfather and married Mary Catherine Garmon. They had 9-10 children. Does anyone have anything else on Nancy & Thomas? Barbara Hagan Brooks

Just thought I would let you know there are five pairs of "Birdwell Beach Britches," Birdwell brand of short pants, on the auction site at http://www.ebay.com It says they are "1970s vintage." I never heard of the brand. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Was Cleo Birdwell a descendant of our George Birdwell of Virginia & N.C.? She was the first female NHL hockey player, 20 years ago or so. Just curious. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Hey Gang, I have received notes in the last few days about the loss of a couple more of our Birdwell's. Ray Isbell notified me that Jerry Herbert Birdwell, Jr. had died the last of June or first of July in Texas, and Joe Birdwell sent me a note saying that his father, Glenn Edward Birdwell had died on 17 January 2000 in Tennessee. Please say a little prayer for these men and their families. Hey Gang, I've added a couple of things to the Articles section today. One is the Surname papers that Velma sent out a few days ago. She sent them to me via smail and I scanned and put them on BT. Thank you, Velma. The second thing is the Will and Inventory of Old George, sent to me by Weldon. Thank you, Weldon. Also, I have finally gotten the Guestbook fixed. There are quite a few messages on there that I didn't know were there, because I couldn't get into it, and it wasn't sending me notification of new messages. Thank you, Nikki (my DIL), for fixing it for me. I have also been changing the index pages, as I go along. I have been putting the Birdwell Relative next to the name of the person, this will either be the father, mother or spouse. This might help to locate the family that you are researching, since there are so many Marys, Georges, etc. Now, for a request!! I could use some volunteers to make html (website) pages for me. I can send instructions on how to do them, along with a template page. It's very easy to do (if I can do it, anyone can!! LOL). It's just very time consuming, and having some help with it would let me load about twice as much. I know that a lot of you are busy with your jobs and families, but anyone with a little bit of extra time......... Thanks bunches and you all have a great day. Hey Gang, Thank you all so much on your feedback. The front page has been changed again. It looks almost like the "old" page, but the intro from Weldon has been added to the Articles section, which makes the front page faster to load. At the moment, I'm working on the descendants of Jacob Elijah Birdwell and his many wives and children. If this is your line, please go thru it and check to make sure that I have all the facts right and if all the links are working. Also, Hugh Hadley Birdwell has been in the hospital, an operation for a cervical injury that he received in a car accident. His email is mailto:jbirdwe1@san.rr.com, if anyone would like to send him a get well card. Hugh, GET WELL SOON! Hey Gang, I've changed the front page of BT. I need an opinion from you all, since this is YOUR site! Do you like it or not? If not, how can I make it better? I had so much on the front page, so wanted to narrow it down some. But if you'd rather have it the old way, I can change it back. Will be looking forward to hearing from you. George Birdwell was listed on the Kent Co, Delaware tax levy in 1726. Thus far, this is the earliest record Ive found him on. The combination of tax lists and his estate papers indicate that he remained in Kent County until his death in 1750. It is unknown when George Birdwell first arrived in Kent Co, Delaware. He was not listed in their court records from 1680 to 1705, nor was he listed on a 1693 tax list shown on the web. Since their tax records before 1726 were not microfilmed he could have arrived anytime between 1705 and 1726. Note the so called Scots-Irish immigration (which included Englishmen) began in earnest in about 1717. It is possible he could have been one of these immigrants. The Kent Co, Delaware Deed Index has just one listing for Birdwell: Deed Book K, page 140. In this 1732 deed George Birdwell gave a horse named Jenny to John Vicory, My son in law. The deed shows George Birdwell signed his name with a mark. It was shown as a B lying on its side. We can speculate on Georges age if he had a married daughter in 1732. At minimum we might suspect George was born by at least 1695. Note that it is possible that he was born well before 1695. For now, I will arbitrarily use the date pre 1700 for this George Birdwells year of birth. It is not known how George Birdwell was related to the Alexander Birdwell listed in Kent Co, Delaware in 1730. Nor is it known which was the elder of the two. George does appear on earlier records there (1726, 1727, and 1729 tax lists) but rather than confirming him as the eldest, this might just indicate that he had arrived in Kent County first. One tidbit which might be a clue is that in 1729 George Birdwell was paid 6 pounds by the county for Druming. Then in 1733, George Bidwell Drummer was paid 6 pounds by the county. I would guess he was being paid as the drummer for the local militia. Is it possible that he had been a drummer in the English army ? Do English military records extend back to the period 1700 to 1725 ? By chance have one of you ever looked into that sort of thing ? On January 7, 1750 John Vicary was appointed as the administrator of the estate of George Burdwell. Because of the old calendar used at that time, this would be considered 1-7-1751 now. So George Birdwell / Burdwell of Delaware apparently died late in the year 1750. The Delaware State Archives have two pages for his estate; the paper naming the administrator, and an inventory of his rather modest estate. This inventory was signed by Joseph Campbell and Daniel Finney. Unfortunately Georges estate papers did not name any of his family members. There is a little more of the nitty gritty details if anyone cares for them yet this is the gist of what I have on George Birdwell (pre 1700). However, there are a couple of other things I should point out about a possible connection to our family. On the surface Delaware may seem an unlikely place of origin for our Augusta Co, Virginia Birdwell family. Yet until 1776, what we now know as Delaware was still considered part of Pennsylvania. The bulk of the settlers in Augusta Co, Virginia either came from or through Pennsylvania before reaching the Virginia frontier. So a Delaware origin might be appropriate after all. Also note that at least one prominent person did just that. The Rev. John Craig (first Presbyterian Minister in Augusta Co, VA) reportedly landed in New Castle county in 1734 (next to Kent Co.), then married in Pennsylvania in 1740 before moving on to Augusta County. Along a similar vein I note that besides our BIRDWELL name, the Kent Co, Delaware tax lists show several of the same names found in Augusta Co, Virginia records. Some of the names which jumped out at me were; BREADY, CAMPBELL, CRAIG, FINNEY, FINNLY, PATTEN, RUSSELL, and WALLACE. We see that many of the Augusta Co, Virginia families had followed one another when they left there in the late 1700s. Might some of the same families also followed one another from Kent Co, Delaware to Virginia in the early 1700s ? This may all just be a great coincidence. As you can see there is NO PROOF of a connection yet. But in a nutshell, the reason I think we should get excited about this is we finally have: 1. Confirmed the Birdwell name in America in the early 1700s. 2. Found a man with the same name as our ancestor (George). 3. Found one or two men old enough to be our Georges father (Alex born before 1710 & George before 1700) 4. Found these prospects in an appropriate area. 5. Know at least one (& possibly several) Augusta Co, Virginia settlers came out of Delaware. Once again Ill state that Ive found NO Proof that this George Birdwell / Burdwell (pre 1700-1750), or Alexander Birdwell (pre 1710), was related to our George Birdwell / Burdwell (c1720-1781). However I have to suspect that they were related, and that this is our most promising lead for the origins of our Birdwell family. I would welcome all of your questions or comments. I would also especially welcome your help in looking into Delaware records for these new Birdwells. If anyone wants to chase this lead, or wants photocopies of this material on George Birdwell (pre 1700) just let me know. Weldon J. Birdwell PO Box 10 Billings, MT 59103
Alexander Birdwell was listed on the 1730 tax roll in Kent County, Delaware. His presence on a tax roll suggests he was probably at least age 21 at that time (so probably born before 1710). It is unknown how he was related to the George Birdwell in Kent County, or who was the elder of the two. The 1730 tax roll is the one and only record I seen listing this Alexander Birdwell. So we have no information on if he was married, or had children. Nor do I know where he was before or after the year 1730. The eldest son of our George Birdwell (c1720-1781) was Robert Birdwell (pre 1750). Some of you may know that circumstantial evidence suggests that a younger Alexander Birdwell (c1787) was a son of Robert. Had Robert named a son Alexander in honor of this Alexander Birdwell in Delaware ? Was he possibly Roberts uncle, or even grandfather ? I am only noting the possibility. Again I have not found any proof of a relationship between Alexander Birdwell (pre 1710) of Delaware and our family. But I am curious about the later occurrence of his name. Delaware has just three counties with Kent Co. being located in the center of the state. If anyone wants to research Alexander Birdwell I would suggest checking the other two to see if he can also be found in their records. New Castle is the northern county, and Sussex is the southern county. If their early records have survived it seems likely that some mention of Alexander Birdwell (pre 1710) could be found in one or the other. One more to follow... Weldon J. Birdwell, in Montana
