    3. This is from my "just when you thought you knew everything" files .... There is this 94 year old man who attends the Birdwell Reunion in Robertson County ... His name is Luther Vernon Short ... Someone asked him just the other day why he attends that reunion. He apparently responded - "We,,. I know I'm related" ... then his wife said she knew why ==>> "John J. and Mariah Birdwell were his grandparents and Ella Birdwell was his mother". Thud ... The picture of the Birdwell reunion circa 1902 - 03 .... the young couple on the far left (looking at the picture) sitting down ... is *probably* Ella Birdwell and her husband Archie Short ... I'll find out for sure on the 30th at the John J. memorial service .... Ella was born 1 Apr 1882 (hence, no show on the 1880 census) and was married by 1900 (hence no show on the 1900 census) ... She was a daughter of John J and Mariah that few of us knew about until just recently ... Ella Birdwell Short died 5 nov 1909 - the mother of four. Jerry

    3. Velma and All, The Dawes Census was done in 1898-1914, too late for our Sarah Duncan. So we still have to do some searching. You have a safe trip. 3. Hi Rose--We have been wondering about the ancestors saying they had Indian blood. I found the following URLhttp://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/finalrolls/ & clicked on it--I found 70 Duncan names listed. Amond them were: Duncan, Charles D. Roll #7157 Duncan, Sarah L. Roll #27528 Duncan, Sarah Roll#27532 Could this be our tie-in??? I have Charles Duncan Birdwell married to Aley Gaines in 1834 in AL. He is the father of my grandfather,Edward Thomas Birdwell, born in South Pittsburgh, TN. He had always told my mother that he was part Indian. Moses Birdwell was married to Sarah Duncan 9-8-1815 in Madison, AL and had 2 children: Charles Duncan and Amanda Minerva. Also, today, I received an inquiry from a Frances M. Thomasmailto:fthomas1@juno.com asking about Harriett Birdwell married to Josiah Mauldin Lauderdale. I gave her what I have but told her to contact you and to also join the Birdwell List. I will be leaving Monday the 18th until the 28th to go back to IL. & IN.--hopefully if the hurricane Gordon doesn't cause too much problem here tomorrow. See you Velma

    3. Hey Gang, I've added some more pictures in Articles. They are of John J. Birdwell and Mariah M. Kirby, another of their sons, and another of James Kirby Birdwell and Lilly Myrtle Lowery. They were contributed by Edna Birdwell Quick. Thank you, Edna. 3. The Serena Birdwell that married a J.W. Young in Jackson County on 11 May 1873 was - beyond any doubt, but lacking in positive proof - was the daughter of George W. and Lucinda Birdwell ... This J.W. was John Young who was evidently previously married and had two daughters - Barbara J (1861) and Rhoda E. (1866). He and Serena were living just a few steps from George W and Lucinda Birdwell in 1880 - John Young and Serena named their first two children, Lucinda A. (born 1874) and George W. (born 1876) ... 2. Jerry Anderson
    3. Folks are asking me why I have the conclusions I have and I'm being asked for sources etc ... I'll give you what I have as long as my fingers hold out ... In the 1880 census, there are two Elizabeth Birdwells. (1) is the "Mother" (age 68) of John J. Birdwell and is living with John J. Birdwell ... She was born in Tenn - her parents in N.Carolina - N.Carolina Some Chaffin authors have placed this Elizabeth with the Abner Chaffin family (he was born 1765 in VA) - I have no better choice at this point .. (2) is a "Sister" (age 68) of George W. Bidwell and is living with George W. Birdwell She was born in Tenn - her parents in Tenn-Tenn The 1830 census for Margaret (McKaughan) Birdwell has a male and a female the ages of George W. and Elizabeth. However, where was this Elizabeth in 1850 - 60 - 70 ??? In Montgomery County in 1850, there is a 32 year old Elizabeth Birdwellliving with a Breeden family - Montgomery County is where Margaret ends up before she dies ... This would further support my conclusion that George W. was Margaret's son and a brother to Joseph (born 1803) and not Joseph (born 1809). My point of this post is to demonstrate the two Elizabeths are just that - Two Elizabeths ... Jerry

    3. Hey Gang, I'm looking for any and all censuses for Jackson Co., Tennessee, no matter what surnames are on it, since Most of the people there were related anyway. I found the 1880 census on censuslinks.com, so I am putting them on the Articles page as we speak. I think that the 1850 census is also there, so will load that also, in the next few days. We could also use all the marriage records from that county. We're going to straighten this William 1772 line out, if we all work together! 1. Serena Birdwell
    2. Jerry Anderson
    3. Rose - Here is the answer to your earlier question about Serena. I'll post it to the group in case someone wants to discuss it. There were two Serena Birdwells living in Jackson County at the same time and the same age (why not, huh ??) (1) Serena who was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Chaffin Birdwell - She was born abt 1838 ... It has been reported that she was married to a J.W. Young .... I think she was married to a Joseph Jones (who was much older than her) as his second wife - Check out the 1870 Census of Jackson County ... To begin with, you won't find Serena Birdwell living at home with her parents - but you will find Joseph Jones and his children from his first marriage to a woman named Parthenia and Serena and a baby girl under one year old (Sarah E.) (2) Serena who was the daughter of George W. and Lucinda - She was born abt 1839 - I think this is the Serena Birdwell who married J. W. Young in Jackson County on 11 May 1873 ... I have not checked the 1880 census on this family yet. Just about all of this George W. Birdwell's children were still living at home during the 1870 census - Joseph C. (this must be where someone came up with a middle initial for a "Joseph" ??) born 1837 - Serena born 1839 - Mary Ann born 1844 - John B. born 1846 - George W. born 1848 - James born 1850 and Amanda born 1852 ... Son William born 1835 was married and living next door with his wife ... Daughter Margaret born 1841 - I have not located yet. Jerry

    3. Hi Jerry--I am going to throw you for another loop I think. I have the same 2 Serena's that you have, one a daughter of Joseph J & Eliz. Chaffin and the other a daughter of Geo. W. and Lucinda Brown. I do not show either of them married. HOWEVER, I have a 3rd Serena.: Serena Catherine daughter of Joseph A. & Juston A. Van Hoozer. She was born 6-28-1870 in TX and died 10-4-1953 in Blue Ridge, TX married to Thomas Sidney Langham and had 9 children. I have their names if you need them. Please don't come down here to Florida and wring my neck for stirring things up. But if you do make it between the 18th of Sept. & 28th of Sept. I will be in Illinois and Indiana then. Good searching Velma

    1. One Last Time ....
    2. Jerry Anderson
    3. There were three known "Josephs" born 1803 - 1809 ... Number One Joseph - son of Benjamin in Washington/Sullivan County ... Forget this one .. HE WAS NEVER MARRIED AND PROBABLY DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHERE JACKSON COUNTY WAS. Just for documention purposes ... 1 Sep 1809 to 16 Nov 1885 ... ok ?????? Number Two Joseph - probably the son of Margaret McKaughan and her husband - the "mystery" Joseph Birdwell... Number Two Joseph was born 13 Mar 1803 and died 12 Aug 1870 in Clay County, TN .... he was married to an Elizabeth Jane (we think her maiden name was Thackston) she was born 12 Mar 1809 and died 14 Nov 1884 in Clay County TN ... Number Two Joseph and Jane were the parents of: 1. Temple - born in ALABAMA 12 Dec 1827 2. Elizabeth - born in ALABAMA 9 Oct 1829 Weldon and I have a theory about Joseph number two and his first two children ,,,, why were they born in Alabama within a short time frame of William Birdwell being hanged => was that William Number Two Joseph's father, and not "Joseph Birdwell" as was claimed by Joab Brooks sometime in the 1870s in Arkansas ?? Could Joab, as a very old man, have confused his aunt Margaret McKaughan's husband as a Joseph instead of a William >>> ??? <<< ... Weldon and I think so, 3. Margaret - born in TN 9 Jan 1832 4. Phoebe Jane - born in TN 9 Sep 1833 5. Mariah - born in TN 5 May 1835 6. George W. - born in TN 20 Feb 1836 7. Joseph - born in TN 18 Mar 1839 8. Mary A. - born in TN 25 Apr 1841 9. William - born in TN 5 Apr 1844 10 Benjamin F. - born in TN 18 May 1846 11 Blake Thackston - born in TN 4 Jan 1849 Temple married Amanda Thackston - Elizabeth married George Long - George W. married a woman named Eliza A. - Joseph married a woman name Surelda - William married a woman named Nancy (Canzida??) - Benjamin F. married Mary A. Gaines and Blake Thackston Birdwell married a woman named S.B, Keith ....................... Number Three Joseph ... born about 1809 and died between 1870 and 1880 We do not know for sure who is the father of this Joseph ... Best "guess" has it as William Birdwell (the one born in 1772 and was the son of old George - this William was believed to have lived everywhere from Kingsport to Nashville) and Betsey Lefever - One other point ==>> this Betsy LeFever Birdwell is NOT RACHEL BIRDWELL .... ok ??? Number Three Joseph married Elizabeth Chaffin. Elizabeth is buried in Robertson County - She was born 11 Apr 1811 and died 7 Sep 1901 <== those dates are on her tombstone .... I have never said any of these Josephs had a middle intial of "J or C" On Birdtracks, using the "BIRDWELL index", Joseph C. or J. Birdwell is confused with the Number Three Joseph (see my rant and rave above) Number one was not married to Elizabeth Chaffin - Number three was. I also think some of the children on that same page as belonging to William and Betsy Birdwell are wrong - but, I can not prove it yet ... I have given Rose Birdwell what I belive to be is the family of William and Betsy LeFever Birdwell and their descendants as "proven by me to date" - she is in the process of putting it up on Birdtracks ... 3. Hey Gang, there have been a lot of new pages on the William 1772 family added over the last few days, with the help of Jerry Anderson. Please go thru them and let me know if there are any broken links or mess-ups. I need all the help I can get on this family line!! Also, in the Articles section, under the Eliz.C. Jones booklet, Margaret rescanned the pages for me, and now they are very readable and very printable. Check it out! And tonight I received obits from Bobby Fox. Thank you, Bobby, I'll load them tonight! I'm still looking for any pictures or documents that you all have hidden away, or in most cases :-) laying in piles on your desk and office floor. 3. Hey Gang, I have added a new page to the Articles page, titles Notebook of Caroline Elizabeth Jones, w/o Andrew A. Birdwell. If you want to print these out, you will have to set your printer on Landscape. This notebook was contributed by Margaret Baldock, who inherited it. Read her correspondence below. Also, tonight when I can get back on the internet (limited time for me), I will be adding the pictures for the Vietnam Wall Experience. As most of you already know, my husband's brother, George Alfred Birdwell, was killed over there. There is also another Birdwell, Michael Del, who was killed there. If any of you have his family line, would you send it to me? Thanks bunches. Rose Margaret's email is: mgb@zianet.com > Rose..........I have in my possession a small booklet (like a 3 x 4 in. > > notebook) hardback that has the missing info on Eliz. C. Jones wife of > > Andrew Birdwell and her siblings as well as birthdates of Robert Russel & > > George Thomas Birdwell. There are Jones, Billingsley & Owens also > > mentioned. The opening date on the top line of the 1st page is 18 June > > 1865. Its very old writing and many misspellings. If you would like a > > copy of what is listed, I'll be glad to supply it. > > > > Margaret Baldock Yes, I can scan it........I'm not related to the Birdwells. My m-i-l was raised by her aunt & uncle, Perry M. & Annie Boss Owens and they had only one natural child.....Perry Jr. He never md. and all the family info went to my m-i-l. When she died my f-i-l gave it to me because I'm very interested in genealogy. I'll copy the info and tell you more and you'll understand I also need help to put this family together Yes, you are welcome to use my name and email. Hopefully, this will help some others. I just hated having this and not sharing the info. When I got it over three yrs ago I tried to find some links to no avail.........about a yr later I did the same thing. I put it aside again, but it was calling me heavy duty this time.
