    3. Letter to my late mother, Lucile W. Hurlbutt, dated August 10, 1967: Dear Mrs. Hurlbutt, My son Sam is still unable to write as he has been kept in bed most of the time since wounded last January but he asks me to thank you for your throughtfulness. There seems to be no near relationship in our families. My father was born in cincinnati, Ohio. His father, Nicholas and Uncle Richard for whom he was named moved to Wichita, Kansas in the 1880's. My great Grandfather came to the States from Cork county, Ireland the town of Banby I believe. He had a brother that disappeared in the States and there could be a conection there. I am taking the liberty of sending your letter on to Gertrude Byrd Barnes, 730 W. Princess Anne Rd., Norfolk, Va 23517. she has studied the Bird & Byrd genealogy back a number of centuries and has been kind and thoughtful of Same. Thank you again for your kindness and good wishes, Sincerely, Richard E. Bird <can't find envelope it came in>
