=============================================== Reprinted with permission of the Laurel County Historical Society =============================================== July 23, 1897 OAKLEY MURDER-At about 10 o'clock Saturday night, at Williamsburg, James Reedy, apparently without any cause whatever, shot Walter Byrd, inflicting a wound of which he died Monday morning. The cause of the killing, as near as we can learn, was this; Luther Byrd had accompanied a young lady to church and Reedy occupied a seat just behind the, and would occasionally kick the young lady's feet and otherwise annoy her. After the services Byrd called him to task, and told him that such conduct was unbecoming a gentleman and that he should not have done it. Reedy denied the charge, when hot words passed. At this point Walter Byrd, a brother to Luther, came up, touched Reedy on the shoulder and requested them not to have any trouble, whereupon Reedy drew his pistol and fired with the above result. Reedy is now in jail without bail. Mr. Byrd was for several years a citizen of this county, making his home at Lily, where he still has many friends. Have a great one!!
