SHERWOOD BIRD/BYRD was born ca 1805 and died ca 1872. He married PENELOPE "PENNY" TILGHMAN (TILLMAN) in Lenoir County. Although most all of the BIRD/BYRD families left Lenoir County in the early 1800s, SHERWOOD seems to be the only intact family that remained in Lenoir County. He is in the 1850 , 1860, etc. Census of Lenoir County with his family. Also in the 1850 Lenoir County Census, NANCY BIRD is with her children ALEXANDER, MARGARET, & SHERROD, also in all probability her mother CATHERINE TILGHMAN who is living with her. In 1860 CATHERINE TILGHMAN is living with her son in Greene County, but NANCY and her children are gone and who her husband was and where she and her children MARGART and SHERROD went to is a mystery. Her son ALEXANDER came to Leon County prior to 1860 and settled in Wakulla County with his wife prior to going to war and being killed. Who were the parents of SHERWOOD and the husband of NANCY ? Since both married TILGHMAN girls, they were most likely brothers. SHERWOOD had a large family. One of his sons was JOSHUA who married MARGARET "MAGGIE " PHILLIPS. They had children THOMAS M.
