    1. [BIRD-L] Origin of surname BIRD

    3. Hello Bird cousins! I was wondering if anyone has information on the origin of the surname "BIRD" -- are its roots all buried in England?? I had an interesting chat with my 81-year old cousin, Bernice Bird Martucci of Utica, NY today and she told me her father, my great-uncle Bill, had told her that "our" surname was actually Byrne and it was changed in the 1700's when the first Byrne/Bird family arrived from Scotland! This was the first I had ever heard of this and wondered if any of you have similar stories. I know my Birds go back to 1795 (my ggggfather, Alexander Bird of Otsego County, NY, then his son George, then his son John, then my granddad -- all are clearly B-I-R-D.) And on another whole train of thought -- I assume you have all seen the Sprint telephone commercials -- I am seriously thinking of having a teeshirt made with a picture of my granddad in the middle, flanked by Tweety and Larry Bird -- and the caption "I don't know, we look an awful lot alike" and probably all three names below each picture. Sprint woouldn't sue me, do you think? :-) Thanks for the help! Marsha Strong Gainesville, FL ha
