Rhett Butler of Charleston, SC- c 1830-1890- Posted April 1, 1999 I am looking for any info on ancestors/descendants of a most interesting individual, said to be from Charleston SC, from a book written in the late 1930's. He was supposedly from a prominent family, but left following a scandal which resulted in the shaming of a local lady. Her reputation was "ruined". He was in the Jonesboro/Atlanta Ga. area in early 1860's and entered the Confederacy late in the war after it was a lost cause. Some referred to him as "Captain Butler". He married the widow of a Charles Hamilton who was a casualty of that war. She was of Irish ancestry and temperament, the dau of a John O'Hara. There was one issue of this union, but her untimely and unfortunate demise as the result of a horse riding accident precluded descendants. She retained family property in Clayton County as well as being a very successful entrepreneur in the Atlanta area. Their spirited marriage, however, failed, and he expressed a callous disregard for her future at their very emotional parting. A hint was provided by her following this painful split when she vowed to restore their marriage by any means possible. She was described as determined and resourceful. He said he was returning to Charleston to restore what dignity he had of his life. The question is what happened following his departure from Atlanta. Did he remarry her and leave descendants or marry another? The same questions exist for his wife. The complete lack of any property or other legal records may be due to numerous fires in the area at the time, although most people are familiar with these individuals. Allied families include Hamilton, Wilkes, Kennedy, Tarleton, Watling. I would appreciate any information or speculation of this fascinating couple. This query is prepared for and in the spirit of April 1 1999............. I will keep a journal on similar replies. Please reply directly to prevent unnecessary and unwelcome board messages.
