I found this on the "Longhunters List", does anyone know anything about it? Glenda >pp 42, Oct 20, 1789 : Walter CROCKETT, >ounty Lieutenant of Montgomery Co, reported to Gov. Beverly RANDOLPH, >"On the first of this instant, a party of Indians took one WILEY's >family, killed and scalped four of his children, and took his wife and >her youngest child prisoners".... The Benge that you are talking about is Robert Benge. He was a halfbreed Cherokee. His white father was indian trader John Benge of VA and NC and his mother was Wurteh of the Bird Clan. Robert, often called Capt. Bench, The Bench, Chief Benge, etc., was never a chief, but did lead several very small bands against white settlements. Apparently, he was white skinned, tall, red haired, and spoke excellent English. Although there are many raids attributed to Robert, this one is not attributed to him by members of the Benge research group. Stories are told that Jenny was given to an elderly Cherokee chief by the Shawnee. Robert Benge would have been in his late twenties in 1789, certainly not elderly. Cherokee Benge researchers assert that Robert was not the father of any of Jenny Wiley's children. I have a chronology of Robert Benge's activity at the Benge website at... http://www.users.mis.net/~chesnut/pages/benge.htm Don
