    3. Linda, I was just told today, as a matter of fact, that there WAS NO Tennessee before 1796. The people were in NC and that's where some early records of them can be found sometimes. Even the 1790 Census for the part of NC that eventually included eastern TN was taken as part of the Salisbury Dist. of NC, with seat of Govt. in the town of Salisbury, which is still in Rowan Co. (formed 1753 from Anson). So, in 1796, Old Tennessee County was in NC, but later in the State of Tennessee, and broken up to create new counties.
