John Bird dies at age of 77. John Bird, 77 years old, who gave almost three decades of service to the University (of Michigan) Dental School, died last night (March 30, 1947) at Leland Tuberculosis Sanatorium, victim of an illness that caused his retirement in 1945. He is mourned today by faculty members and former students who in the words of one, "respected him for his devotion to duty and his unfailing interest in the dental school and all of its students." John Bird was custodian of the school for almost 29 years. He went to work for the University in 1916 and resigned in 1945 to enter the sanatorium. Mr. Bird was, as well, a resident of Ann Arbor almost all of his life. He was born in England on December 27, 1869, but came here with his parents, Matthew and Sofia Bird, when he was two years old. Praised By Dean. While in the employment of the University he turned a job that could have been humdrum into a thing of interest and cheer. On learning this morning of his death, Dr. Russell W. Bunting, dean of the dental school said: "His services were quite beyond the ordinary limits of duty. He was an interested friend of the students and the faculty and was particularly helpful to all of us. By the manner in which he did it, he mad his job an important part of the school." Mr. Bird leaves two sons, Ellis of Kalamazoo and Neil of Hazel Park; two daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Gary of Hazel Park, and Mrs. Iva McPherson of Kalamazoo; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Janie Westgate of Adrian, and Mrs. John Moore of Ann Arbor; two brothers Herbert of Grand Rapids, and James of Ann Arbor. Dental school faculty members attended his funeral, which was held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 1947 at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel. The Reverend Henry Yoder and Reverend Harvey A. Huey officiated. Burial has taken place in Arborcrest Memorial Park, 734-761-4572.
