    1. [BIRD-L] Col. Amos Bird of Hartford, Conn.

    3. The following was taken from a Genealogical Sketch of the Bird family of Hartford, Conn., written by Isaac Bird around 1855. Apparently a large monument was erected to Col. Bird and has the following on the front side: "Erected, Oct. 10, 1842, to the memory of Col. Amos Bird, by citizens of Castleton and friends, as a tribute of respect to a worthy man. Born at Salisbury, Conn., and died Sept. 16, 1772, aged 30 years." On another side: "Col. Bird was the first white man who asserted dominion in Castleton, where he arrived in Jan. 1766. He was the first possessor of the soil for civilization, and the first called to resign it, leaving the fruits of his bold enterprise to others." On the East side: "The mortal remains of Col. B. were first interred, by his direction, near his dwelling in the valley of Bird Creek, and after seventy years disinterred and here intombed to wait the summons that awakes the dead." The way this book is written, it is difficult to connect the Birds that are mentioned in it. The best I can tell, this Col. Amos Bird was the son of Joseph Bird (and Dorcas Moore), son of Thomas Bird. This is not my family but thought someone might be able to use the information. Glenda
