BYRD was born March 21, 1829 in Lenoir County, North Carolina, and died March 06, 1855 in Wakulla Cpunty, Florida. She married WILEY SCOTT MCGEHEE. He was born in South Carolina. Notes for EVELYN M. BYRD: Obituary Evelyn M. Byrd McGehee A few months since, we were startled by the sudden decease of Dr. W. S. McGehee, who, a few days before, was buoyant with high health, and hope, anticipating perhaps many more years enjoyment of this life's goods. But he was stricken with death. His beloved companion (it was thought) would scarce survive the deep grief which convulsed her delicate frame, as with an earthquake of sorrow. In the wisdom of God she was strengthened, and spared yet a while to her little ones. After the decease of her husband, Mrs. Evelyn McGehee removed, with her two little girls, to Madison County, and became an inmate of the family of Judge J. McGehee, her brother-in-law. On revisiting this county not long since her relations and friends were greatly encouraged, with the apparent improvement of her health; and for the first time in many years, her heart may have been cheered, with the hope, so dear to every mother's heart; that of rearing her own offspring. But alas! Our brightest sunshine is often succeeded, by the darkest night. Whilst enjoying the pleasure of a reunion, with an only sister, to whom she was deeply attached, Mrs. McGehee was attacked by distressing illness (Erysipelas) which terminated in death. In the beginning of the sickness, she assured her friends, she would never recover and besought the sister to take charge of her helpless orphans. Though delirious a great portion of the time, yet the few sane moments vouchsafed her, were spent in supplication and Praise to God. Ere consciousness was mingled in the agonies of death, she requested that her little girls should;d be brought to her. The changing scenes of many years, may obliterate traces of the past. But the fervency of that dying spirit's benediction, the monitions, and pleadings of that mother's anguished heart, for her babies, will never be effaced from the memory of those that witnessed the melancholy scene. Without a single tear, but with a calmness beautiful, as strange, she placed her emaciated hand on the heads of her dear little girls, and gave them a mother's blessing, then with inexpressible pathos, gave them to her sister, as her dying pledge of love. Oh! how tenacious was that mother's love for her children, as she exclaimed in the agony of her heart, oh, that it was the Lord's will I might take them with me! Yet for the love of Jesus, my redeemer, I can part even from them, committing them to my Father's care. May our God, in his abundant mercy draw the hearts of his bereaved relations and friends to that fountain of love all potent in its power to soothe the mourning spirit. May the sister through much tribulation, be purified, remembering the Garden of Gethsemane, may she pray and not lack for strength to perform the sad duty assigned to her. Mrs. Evelyn M. McGehee was born in Lenoie County, North Carolina the 21 March, 18296. Her illness was short, yet her suffering was excruciating, and of the most distressing nature. Her death occurred in Wakulla County, Florida, during a visit to her brother Waitstell Byrd, on the 6th of March, 1855. She was an acceptable member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and died in the full fellowship of the denomination. A FRIEND 1850 Leon County, Florida Census: McGehee, W. He was born Abt. 1843 in Virginia, and died September 30, 1896. Notes for OLIVIA A. MCGEHEE: Nassau County, Florida 1880 Census: Thompson, William N. 37 Clerk in RR Office Ann O. 31 Evalyn E. 7 Lucy 6 Scott 3 John M. 1 Obituary Mrs. Olivia A. Thompson Fernandina, Fla., Feb. 6, 1920 At half past ten o'clock on Thursday morning, February 5, a congregation thoroughly representative of Fernandina's best people assembled in the First Presbyterian Church of this city, to attend the funeral of Mrs. Olivia Ann Thompson, who died at her residence on seventh street at twenty minutes to four o'clock February 4, 1920. The services were conducted by Dr. Eugene 'Daniels, the pastor of the church, the pall bearers being A.S. Allan, F.H.Hobein,W.H. Seibert, Hinton J. Baker, Ira Hardee, and B.P. Mularkey. The interment was in St. Peter's Cemetery. On the eleventh day of October, 1849, there was born in Wakulla County,an infant whose future life was to be of unusual interest. This little child was the daughter of Dr. Wiley Scott McGehee and his wife, nee Evelyn Bird, both South Carolinians. Dr. McGehee was a surgeon in the United States Army, both in the Mexican and the Indian Wars. In the very early childhood of this little daughter she lost both her parents. She was then adopted and reared as the child of her uncle, Honorable John C. McGehee. Judge McGehee, who was born in 1800 and died in 1881, had become proprietor of a most extensive plantation in Madison County while Florida was yet a territory, and had built a noble mansion, "Chuleotah", the Indian name for "pine hill". The adopted child was ultimately placed in the celebrated Moravian school at Salem, N.C., and remained there'till she was graduated. After the Civil War the foster father resided temporarily at Fernandina. William Naylor Thompson of Fernandina, a citizen of much prominence, was Treasurer of the F.C. and P. Railroad; he also represented Nassau County in the Florida Senate. Senator Thompson and Olivia Ann McGehee were married in 1871. Ever afterward, Mrs. Thompson resided in Fernandina, in the home which she and her husband had built. Here her husband died September 30, 1896, and here also she breathed her life away. Mrs. Thompson was the beloved mother of six children. Two of these went home to God long years ago. The surviving ones are Evelyn Elizabeth, wife of Dr. L. T. Galphin of Havana, Fla., Lucy, wife of R. V. Nolan of Fernandina, Lieut. Scott M.Thompson of Fernandina, and Lewis Glass Thompson, of Tallahassee. Mrs. Thompson was a much loved and useful member of the Presbyterian Church, of which her foster father had been an honored ruling elder. This life of three score years and ten, so full of noble connections and so replete with interesting details, reveals a woman whom her husband could love and reverence, whom her children could almost worship while she lived, and can lovingly remember after she died --- for the touch of whose "vanished hand" her fiiends may long sigh and her church may grieve, yet not without hope. Hello I am searching for family and information on Sarah Ann BIRD, b 1845, Birmingham, Warwickshire. Married to Richard SAUNDERS, in 1870 Birmingham. Parents of Sarah were James BIRD, b 1806, Kings Norton and Ann, b 1810 Meriden, Warwickshire. Thanks. Gary Saunders Victoria BC CANADA
Searching for info on John Bird who was married to Rena Pheobe Oxley in Franklin County VA. I have no dates for any vitals on either of them, but I do know they had a daughter named Sarah Catherine (Sally Kate) who married James Thomas Young. Sally Kate and James settled in St. Albans WV. Anyone with any info on this line please e-mail me at Machyelle@aol.com. P.S.- This is not my direct line, this is my step-fathers line who is also my 3rd cousin. I figure some people are not willing to work with me since it is not my line, but I can exchange info and connect you with my "Dad". Thanks, Michelle Maxey
I apologize to everyone for sending my letter to the list. I have sent an apology to her as well.

Sandy in Florida Maybe I will catch up with my mail when I retire, in 2010, <grin> >> Everyone, There are better ways to make suggestions to people than this. I did not change the subject line because I sent a copy personally to "Judy" as well as to the "List" so she could make the corrections herself, and make changes to the subject line as she saw fit. I assume the reason the subject line "was not changed" to me was for the same reason (sent personally). Yet, I am being corrected for doing it. I change subject lines when I answer a reply, or if I am asking something of a person or a list. I am not in the lazy habit of hitting the reply button. I hate to see 10 emails with the same subject line, and not one has that subject in it. I don't think my hitting the reply this one time warranted this type of mail to me personally. Thanks for your time and I am sorry if I offend anyone. Barbara

Sorry, slip of the finger. Esther was born 1779, not 1799. Does anyone have any idea where this was located, or how I can find out more about it? I believe this Samuel is one of mine but need to know more about him. Birdsville,GA- - Samuel Bird, Post Master - bor in Connecticut
I have a theory that I'm going to check out, but I thought I'd see if anyone on the list already has this information and can save me some time. Here goes: There's a BIRD family living in Newark, NJ from the 1840 census on. The family consists of a widow Esther Bird, b. 1799 in New York, and sons William, James R., and Jeremiah, all born in New York. There is also what appears to be a widowed daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, with a daughter Julia Bird. I was never able to find a spouse for Esther. Recently I came across a marriage listed on the familysearch web site for Charles Marsh Bird and Esther Romaine, 25 Dec 1796, New York City. Charles appears in the New York census for 1800 and 1810, and then Esther is a widow in the NY census for 1820 and 1830. I think that these are the same family. Some other clues: James R. named a son Jasper, and there was a Jasper Romaine living near the Birds in NY; Jasper Bird named his son John Romaine Bird. Charles Marsh Bird's father was Jeremiah, the name of one of Esther's sons. Before I go crazy trying to prove this, does anyone already have evidence to prove (or disprove) this? Please ignore this posting it appears the submitter joined the list sent the email and then unsub'ed. Don't write to the submitter for the email is bouncing from where he subscribed, of course this is how they get away with spamming. It's to bad that Rootsweb sends a letter to all mail it ejects for spam telling them how to join. I'll see in the morning what I can do about this spammer and report him to his mail server, Ha he messed up this time spamming a list where the list owner works for the Worlds largest webhosting company.
