1. [BIRD-L] 'Bird Branches' newsletter
2. J G Locke
3. Does anyone know if the 'Bird Branches' is still being published? I don't remember ever seeing it mentioned on the list. It was published by Hester Stockton, covered all spellings and lines. I used to exchange my 'Gore Family Newsletter' with her, but haven't seen anything in the last few years. Regards, Joyce Gore Locke

1. [BIRD-L] Question:Richard Byrd,d. 1818,Johnston Co.,NC
2. Richard & Jeannette Byrd
3. Bird/Byrd Researchers: Question: Was Elizabeth Sparkman, Richard Byrd’s only wife? It is widely believed that Elizabeth Sparkman married Richard Byrd on 30 July 1785, and they had the following children as listed in Richard’s will, proven Nov. Term 1818. Richard Byrd's Will, dated 12 Nov. 1807. Children: George Byrd Richard Byrd John Byrd Edward Byrd Bright Byrd Redding Byrd Elizabeth Allen Benjamin Byrd, deceased; Widow: Zilpha; and Grandson: Benjamin I believe that I descend from Richard Byrd through his son, Benjamin, who was deceased by 1803 (see document #1) I believe that son, Benjamin, deceased, had the following children: Benjamin Byrd*, grandson, in will dated 12 Nov. 1807. William Byrd* Pearsis/Pearcy* Ann/ Nancy* *See documents #2 and #3 It should be noted that according to "The Researcher’s Guide to American Genealogy" by Val D. Greenwood, that Ann is a nickname for Nancy. I suspect that Richard was possibly married prior to 1785 for the following reasons. (1) Richard at 33 years, a bit old for a first marriage. (2) The oldest that Benjamin (deceased by 1803) could be is 18 years. (3)18 seems too young to have married Zilpha and had 4 children. (4) From census, I believe that Benjamin and Zilpha’s son, Benjamin was born in 1798 and their son, William, was born in 1801. This would mean that Benjamin and Zilpha had to be married by 1798, making Benjamin a very young groom at 13 years of age. ********** Document #1 The following document was found in the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was filed under Duplin County Estates 035.508.13 - 1752-1930 - Brush to Byrd. The particular file was Byrd, Benjamin 1803. This may Certify to the honorable Court of Duplin that my husband Benjamin Byrd has lately Deceased Intestate leaving no will & I the widow of the sd Dec'd have given up my right of administration to John Hufham Zilpah Byrd Administration on the Estate of Benjamin Bird To John Huffam 2000 Dollars Zilpah Byrd To John Hufham Resignation of Administration July Term 1803 Granted ********** Document #2 Tuesday, 22 October 1805 Zilpha Byrd is appointed Guardian to her four children: Pearsis Byrd, Benjamin Byrd, Ann Byrd & William Byrd & has given Bond of L500; for the whole ordered she take their Estates into possession. ********** Document #3 Duplin Deeds, Book 4A pg 82. Zilpha Byrd of Duplin Co. to her loving children Pearcy, Benjamin, Nancy & William Byrd of same, 11 Mar. 1807, for "love good will & affection" a negro boy named Charles. Open to discussion about this verbal history. > Hello, I don't think many of our ancestors knew their own lineage beyond about two generations. There was a WILKINSON man held prisoner in Beirut about 20 years ago and my Dad always said he was probably a distant cousin. He assumed all WILKINSONs had a common ancestor, which is not true. I think statements like, "He's probably a cousin" are remembered as "We are cousins" a generation or two down the line. Also, in the 1800s some newly wealthy American's hired genealogist to trace their family roots. These paid genealogist made mistakes, stretched the truth, or even forged documents to earn their pay. At that time many people believed that Darwin's theory could also be applied to cultural, social, and lifestyle status. Poor people were believed to be poor because their ancestors didn't have the qualities it took to better themselves and their off spring also lacked those traits. They thought a person who acquired wealth must be descended from the upper class, even if he was born in poverty. With those preconceived ideas in their heads, if there were two possible ancestors the paid genealogist often connected lineage's to the most glamorous one. It was better to descend from disowned royalty than from a shipwrecked Irish sailor. Grant Johnston, Chico, CA Maybe the grass is really greener on the other side of the fence. But it's probably because your neighbor uses more fertilizer and water.

3. Fellow Byrd Historians, I have a Sarah Ann Bird/Byrd b. 1826 d. 1850 TN. I know who she married and her children but I don't have her family. Anyone having genealogy history for families in TN please send the information to me. My verbal history says she is from ADM. R. E. Byrd's bloodline. When I checked that families' genealogy I don't find a connection for her. I don't know if this family verbal history is correct. Byrd cousins visited my mother's parents and discussed their "cousin Richard E.Byrd's" explorations. Open to discussion about this verbal history. 1. [BIRD-L] Moses Byrd, Monroe Co., AL 1871
2. My great-great-grandfather was David G. WILKINSON who married Sarah H. BYRD. Probate records exist for her father, Moses BYRD, who lived in Old Texas - Pine Apple area. Probate was in Monroe Co. but they lived right on the Wilcox Co. line. I've never found the will. It probably got mixed in with other papers, accidentally or deliberately, and removed from the Court House. Below is my attempt to transcribe the probate records for the will of Moses BYRD, Monroe Co., Alabama ca 1871. People mentioned in Probate T. L. FEAGIN Asa WILKINSON H. A. J. WILKINSON Sarah H. WILKINSON, (wife of D. G. WILKINSON, daughter of Moses BYRD) Caroline STINSON (wife of George Stinson but she was a widow by 1871) Isaac BYRD Wm BYRD Rosaline FEASTER, wife of John FEASTER Allen BYRD Jane BROWN wife of James BROWN Andrew BYRD Josiah BYRD Ann WARD Caroline WARD Elija BYRD Mary F. BYRD Martha J. BYRD Wiley BYRD Martha CATES wife of Hiram Cates Moses WARD William WARD John De LOACH John OWEN D. L. NIVILLE Probate Court, Monroe County Special Term February 20, 1871 This day came Mary Byrd by her attorney and filed her petition in writing therefore producing and filing in this court an instrument of writing purported to be the last will and testament of the said Moses Byrd, decd, and propounded the said will for probate in this county, Which Said instrumentb appears to be attested by T. L. Faegin, Asa Wilkinson, and H. A. J. Wilkinson. It is therefore ordered by the court that the Second Monday of March next be appointed a day for hearing testimony in proof of Said instrument as such will. It is further ordered that the said T. L. Feagin, Asa Wilkinson, and H. A. J. Wilkinson be subpoenaed to be & appear before the court on the Said Monday of March next, to testify as to the validity of such instrument as such will. It is further ordered that Sarah Wilkinson, wife of D. G. Wilkinson, Caroline Stinson, Isaac Byrd, Wm. Byrd, Rosaline Feaster, wife of John Feaster, Allen Byrd, Jane Brown, wife of James Brown, Andrew Byrd, Josiah Byrd, Ann Ward, Caroline Ward, Elija Byrtd, Mary F. Byrd, Martha J. Byrd, Wiley Byrd, Martha Cates, wife of Hiram Cates, Moses Ward, William Ward have notice by citation to be personally served on them ten days before the said second Monday in March, next. It is further ordered that John De Loach be and he is appointed guardian ad litteram for all minors interest and that he have notice of said appointment. Probate Court Monroe County March Term 1871 Moses Byrd Decd, Estate of} This day came Mary Byrd, the same having been appointed for hearing her aplication for the probate of an instrument of writing purporting to be the last will and testament of said decedent. Also came John De Loach who was heretofore appointed guardian ad litteram for all the minor heirs of said decedent, and the notice required by a previous court having been given to all parties off interest. It appears from the testimony of Asa Wilkinson that he signed the instrument of writing purporting to be the last will and testiment of said decedent, in the presence of the said testator and in the presence of the other subscribing witness o the same, the said testator declaring that the said instrument constitutes his last will, that the said testator was of full age of twenty one years and upwards at the time of making said will, and that he was of sound mind deposing memory and fully capable of making his said will. It is therefore ordered adjudged and decreed by the court that the said will of the said Moses Byrd decd be recieved by the court that same is hereby declared to be fully proven as the last will and testament of said decedent and as such admittred to probate. It is further ordered that the same with the proof thereof be recorded and placed on file. Moses Byrd Decd, Estate of} On the application of Mary Byrd it is ordered that she be and she is hereby appointedv Executrix with the will ammended of said estate and she gave bond in the sum of One Thousand and Six hundred dollars, ordered that the bond this day filed by Mary Byrd as Executrix aforesaid in the sum of One Thousand and Six hundred dollars with Allen Byrd and John Owen as her securitors be and the same is hereby appointed and thatb letters as Executrix issue to her accordingly. 3. I am looking for JAMES BIRD who was a Farmer/Butcher in Almondsbury, Glouc, in the early 1800's. My research to date indicates that he married ANN PENNANT in St Peters Church, Liverpool, Lancs - Feb 7th 1803. I am looking for any information - parents / date of birth/marriage/siblings, which may help me in further research. I have the birth certificate of SAMUEL BIRD which shows the address of JAMES and ANN to be Gils (Gills ?) Lake Marsh Farm in 1815. They had another son CHARLES. This is all I know to date. Thank you Maureen Carroll Burlington, ON, CAN Researching SOM / BRISTOL; BAYNHAM, BIRD, BABB, BOWDEN, CLAVEY, GORE, GULLICK, HOPKINS, NOYES, OATEN, PARSONS, PENNANT, PURVEY, RIPPON, SMITH, WARREN-WALKER & WILDING.

3. Hi Everyone! I haven't checked this site out yet, but might be worth a try. Just wanted to pass on the info. WISEnut Search Engine New Internet search engines are appearing all the time. For genealogists, another excellent new search engine is WISEnut at http://www.wisenut.com/ . WISEnut claims to have approximately 1.5 billion Web pages indexed and is robust enough to quickly search them and produce excellent and categorized results. By entering your ancestor's name, all in lower case and enclosed in quotation marks, WISEnut will search its massive index and present you with what it logically believes the most germane matches are. If WISEnut finds enough matches, it also presents results in what is called WISEguide categories. Each category will be titled, followed with a number enclosed in parentheses indicating the number of links in the category. WISEguide categories allow you easy access to logically grouped materials. This is a nice addition to the collection of search engines available to help the genealogical researcher.

1. [BIRD-L] Newton Co MO Sheriffs
2. To Choate, Byrd & Harrell researchers: Being as how all of these surname lists have slowed down for the August summer doldrums, I thought I'd pass on the following post on sheriffs on Newton Co MO. I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about any of these gents. I receive all posts with "Byrd" in them and this one turned up. I hope this helps someone. Best Regards, Janet Hunter ======== Source: MONEWTON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MONEWTON] Request for information about early Sheriffs of Newton County Hi! My name is Karen Scott. I'm married to Randy Scott, who is quite active on this list, and am also the editor of the "Newton County Roots", our local genealogy society newsletter. I'm currently working on an article for Roots (and, perhaps later, a book) about the early sheriffs of Newton County. I'm posting this message as a request for information/material about these gentlemen from list members. If anyone has family history information they would be willing to submit for possible inclusion in the article/book, I would be thrilled to have it (and would give credit to the submitter)! The following is the list of early Sheriffs as complete as I have it from the MO State Hx Society and the local Goodspeeds: 1839 Gibson, Isaac 1845 Newton, Elbert C. 1846 McKaskle, A.B. 1849 Hearrell, Samuel 1850 & 1852 Crouch, Milner F. 1854 Jennings, Henderson 1858 Choate, J.K. 1861 Johnson, M.R. 1862 Keller, R.V. 1863 & 1864 Boyd, William M. (appointed Sept. 28, 1863) 1863 Reagan, Charles (supposedly appointed Sept. 29, 1863) 1865 Boyd, William M. 1865 & Cox, John C. 1865, 67, 68 Hutchison, Lewis B. 1870 DeGroff, A.P. 1872, 74, 78 Choate, A.C. 1876 Baker, William H. 1881 McElhany, James R. 1883 Hutchison, Lewis B. (died Nov. 1883) 1883 Byrd, J.W. (filled remainder of Hutchison's term) 1885 Byrd, J.W. 1887 & 1889 Shannon, John F. 1891 & 1893 Featherston, Frank 1895 Akers, Frank 1897 & 1899 Thomas, Andrew J. For the book, I will probably include deceased Sheriffs through present day. I've found obituaries, family files, and census records for some of these folks but hope that listers may have more complete information from their own research and would be willing to save my "re-inventing the wheel". Again, thanks for your consideration and I would greatly appreciate any information anyone would be willing to submit. Please either post to the list or email me off-list at randykar@ipa.net. Notes for JOHN WILLIAM BIRD: 1.Subject: Re: information on James William Bird Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 13:06:57 -0700 (PDT) From: David C <dac1968mich@yahoo.com> To: brian <bird10001@yahoo.com> Hello Brian, Well here it is...... John Bird dies at age of 77. John Bird, 77 years old, who gave almost three decades of service to the University (of Michigan) Dental School, died last night (March 30, 1947) at Leland Tuberculosis Sanatorium, victim of an illness that caused his retirement in 1945. He is mourned today by faculty members and former students who in the words of one, "respected him for his devotion to duty and his unfailing interest in the dental school and all of its students." John Bird was custodian of the school for almost 29 years. He went to work for the University in 1916 and resigned in 1945 to enter the sanatorium. Mr. Bird was, as well, a resident of Ann Arbor almost all of his life. He was born in England on December 27, 1869, but came here with his parents, Matthew and Sofia Bird, when he was two years old. Praised By Dean. While in the employment of the University he turned a job that could have been humdrum into a thing of interest and cheer. On learning this morning of his death, Dr. Russell W. Bunting, dean of the dental school said: "His services were quite beyond the ordinary limits of duty. He was an interested friend of the students and the faculty and was particularly helpful to all of us. By the manner in which he did it, he mad his job an important part of the school." Mr. Bird leaves two sons, Ellis of Kalamazoo and Neil of Hazel Park; two daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Gary of Hazel Park, and Mrs. Iva McPherson of Kalamazoo; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Janie Westgate of Adrian, and Mrs. John Moore of Ann Arbor; two brothers Herbert of Grand Rapids, and James of Ann Arbor. Dental school faculty members attended his funeral, which was held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 1947 at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel. The Reverend Henry Yoder and Reverend Harvey A. Huey officiated. Burial has taken place in Arborcrest Memorial Park, 734-761-4572.
