    1. Updates to my genealogy pages!
    2. Erin Bradford
    3. Hi everyone! I would like to announce some new features added to my genealogy pages. First, I have my Black surname database online, it contains the other surnames that follow: Hackett, Murphy, Wilder, Wylder, Melton, Hubb, Johnson, Coventry, Foxworthy/Worthey, Stinchacum, Lipscomb, Bradford, McNeill, Eller, Fisher, Matthews, Barringer, Phillips, Laxton, Rash, Kerns, Day, Davidson, Styer The address to access this database is: http://members.tripod.com/~Kshai/genealogy.html Once there click on any of the above surnames and it will take you to the database. Second, I have the Kellogg database up. It contains the surnames that follow plus more: Bird, Boltwood, Bradstreet, Clark, Cotton, Dudley, Hall, Halles, Hardy, Hopkins, Lewis, Partridge, Preston, Rice, Smith, Terry, White, Yorke You can access this database the same way as above. Third, within the next week, I plan to have the Kendall database up. What I plan on doing is combing the Kellogg and Kendall database together and deleting the Kellogg database from my server and upload the Kendall-Kellogg database. I have 100's of other surnames that will be added as a result of the Kendall database. Fourth, I have a new message board. The only way to access this is through the same address, and I would like for it to be used only for the surnames above and those added as a result of the Kendall database. Fifth, I have a new genealogy guestbook. To access that, go to http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/6106/genlinks.html then scroll down and click on either sign or view guestbook, I would give just a straight address to sign it, but unfortunately, there is no specific address, there is a special HTML code I had to enter in order for it to be signed. I'm am not sure, but you may at least be able to bookmark the page for where you sign, but not positive. ANYWAY: I think you might like this guestbook better than my old one....In this guestbook, there are 6 extra fields besides the name, email address, URL etc.. where you can enter surnames that you are searching for. Dang, this is longer than I planned to take, so I will sign off here:) Thanks for reading. 1. Moses Bird, b abt 1815 NC
    2. Larry Thomas
    3. I am looking for information on Moses Bird and in particular his wife. Moses was born about 1815 in NC and in 1850 was in Marshall Co. TN. A letter from his wife later indicated that they were in Neosho MO. Moses wife was Mary "Polly" Hopwood, daughter of Willis and Penelope Moore Hopwood. She first married Branson D. Caple . Branson died abt Jan 1840 in Marshall Co. TN. They had children Branson D. Jr., William G., Nancy H., Willis H., David M. (died in Union Army in civil war), Andrew Craig, Mary Malvina. Branson left a will providing for wife and children. Mary then married Moses Bird before 1850. Moses was the overseer on the Hopwood plantation and was several years younger than Mary Polly. In about 1856 they left TN and Mary sent a letter back later asking for money from Neosho MO. Her daughter Mary Malvina married James Daugherty and moved to Stephensville, Montana and some decendends moved on to WA. In her father's will he states " As to my daughter now Polly Bird the case stands thus, when her first husband Brandson Caple decd she had more than a childs part. which amounts to between five and six hundred dollars, and then married Bird and in a short time nearly all was wasted and gone, and I was guardian for two and my son for a third child in a few years not perhaps, one dollar left of their Estate after they got it, so it looks to me like throwing property is money into fire to give to such. I give these reasons good and vallad to me for what follows, I will that after my death and wife, that out of my Estate three hundred dollars be placed in the hands of my Executors or a trustee and that they pay the interest of said money yearly into the hand of my daughter Polly for life and at her death one hundred dollars of said three shall be equally divided among the heirs of her body and the other two hundred Return to my estate...." Note that her several of the children remained in TN when she left. Does anyone know what happen to Moses and Mary Hopwood Caple Bird. Thanks, Larry Thomas

    1. From List Owner - SPAMS and suggestions of what to do - Long
    2. Hello again everyone, Well my lists are all now on restricted. Here is some information I have been picking up just today on how to report spammers. I wrote one individual who asked about spamming, and thought after I had sent the message I should send one to my lists. I personally get junk mail every day, to each of my screen names. The first thing you should do, is never forward it back to them, don't reply, and don't use the address that they tell you to send a message to, to be removed from their list. If you do, they will be able to confirm that it is a good e-mail address, and you will get more junkmail. Here is what I have been doing up until today, when I found more that I can do. If the junk mail has an address I am pretty sure is no good, my being on AOL I just forward it to TOSspam. Any one on AOL needs to send any unwanted junkmail to that address. This way AOL can try and locate the source and block them from sending any more to AOL. Also, especially important is if the sending has an AOL address, they are knocked off AOL. Each of you on other online services should find out if they have an address where junk mail should be found. Now, regarding getting mail from other well known addresses, I forward them to [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Now from some of them, and others (if you recognize a well known name, just put [email protected] and address) you will get an automatic reply which will tell you they need certain headers, don't worry about it as when you forwarded the mail they got all of them. For those of you that are on Prodigy Classic you can go to http://antares.prodigy.com/junkmail/page1.htm I just picked this up in my Genealogy: Missing Links, Vol. 2, No. 30 yesterday. I also suggest you send all, CC: to this address I got today- [email protected], first government address I got. Maybe if they started getting a lot of forwarded junkmail they would realize how bad it really is. From our Listowners mail I picked this up from Tim Pierce He wrote: There are already several newsgroups that are used to announce and alert people to new spans: news.admin.net-abuse.bulletins Bulletins of action about net abuse. (Moderated) news.admin,net-abuse.email Discussion of abuse of email systems. news.admin.net-abuse.policy Discussion of net abuse policy. (Moderated) news.admin.net-abuse.sightings Sighting of net abuse. (Moderated) The .email group is rather noisy, being unmoderated. I suspect that either .bulletins or .sightings would be of more intrest to folks on this list. I realize that many people are leery of reading Usernet newsgroups because of getting their addresses slurped up, but here's a helpful thing to keep in mind: if you don't "post", the spammers won't get your addresses from Usenet. Just reading a group is about as harmless a thing as you can do. Also from Tim Pierce I picked this up from Listowners mailing list. Spam fighting tip: If you want to complain to a provider's ISP, don't reply to the spam. Say you got a message from '[email protected]". Mail (forward - mine) a copy of the spam with a complaint to "[email protected]' -- this complaint forwarding service, set up by net old.timer John Levine, will try to figure out the right administrative address for that domain and send it to the correct place. Very handy stuff. And of course, sign up with CAUCE http://www.cauce.org, if you haven't already. Now I also picked this up on KYROOTS from Michael Brown. This is exactly what he wrote about Unwanted Email. Getting unwanted advertising through your email, send this to their ISP to stop it: Offence under US code Title 47, Sec 277(b) (1) (C) I have recently received UNSOLICITED and UNWANTED junk e-mail from an individual who appears to be using your site. A copy of that mail is attached herewith. Junk Mail is now regarded as the same as unwatned and unsolicited junk faxes and telemarketing calls - all of which are now ILLEGAL under US federal law: By US Code Title 47, Sec. 227 (a) (2) (B), a computer/modem/printer meets the definition of a telephone fax machine. By Sec. 227 (b) (1) (C), it is unlawful to send any unsolicited advertisment to such equipment, punishable by action to recover actual monetary loss, or $500.00, whichever is greater, for EACH violation. Please ensure this is stopped NOW> You have been put on notice. If you confirm to me promptly that effective action has been taken against those persons responsible, I will not take the matter further on this occasion. I will separately notify your upstread providers as they may also be liable for violations originating from your site. It's the law! Don't know how to find their ISP? See the following example: You get an email from [email protected] (made up email address I hope!) Take his ISP from he email which is BINET.COM, att the http://www. To it: http://www.BINET.COM Go to the URL and find the email address to the webmaster or service master. Send them the legal statement above. General, it will be [email protected], or [email protected], or [email protected] This has worked for me! Michael Now, (me again), I have not checked this US code Title myself. I will try to find it. Not sure I would write exactly what he said, but going to their URL, and sending a message say I had received unwanted and unsolicited e-mail from someone on appears to be using their site, might just quote the Title number and ask them to please take action again them, or some thing like that. But I did want you to know that there is now more action we can take against them. I believe there are now two bills being acted on, either in the House or Congress, I forgot which. If you check the address for CAUCE you can find out more about it. One is to totally stop all the junk mail. The other is for the ISP's to filter them out. One big company that produces, I believe the majority of junk mail, says he does not care, they will not stop him, and he will pay any and all fines, and it will not bother his company at all. He will continue to get around them. That is why one bill is to stop any and all junkmail. With ISP's filtering, he has a very good chance to get through any way. Hope this has helped some of you. I know I am tired of all the junk mail I get. I will say one thing, I love reporting to TOSspam on AOL, especially if they have an AOL address. I know soon they will not be there, of course they will sign up under another name and start again, but maybe after a while, they will get tired of it. I am a distributor for PetGuardian, on that I am always getting junk mail about having my business be sent to targeted people by bulk mail. This is the junk mail. I know that even if targeted people, it is still unsolicited and I will not advertised my web site that way. I would not want to do to people what is happening to me. Besides, knowing them, they would probably send me my own e-mailing. Well this has been a long one, I apoligize, but I think this junk mail is getting out of hand. So maybe with some of the information I have sent we can help cut it down. Sharon Straight [email protected] List Owner DRUMM ALLEN-NEW-ENGLAND/NY/NJ/PA BUCKLEY STRAIGHT BIRD

    2. Hello everyone, I want to notify everyone that I am changing the lists from open to restricted. Open means that any one can post a message to the list, but can not receive messages. The reason for actually closing the lists is because all list owners were notified by Karen of Rootsweb that a spammer or spammers has now found Rootsweb, just as they found Maiser. To date our lists have not gotten any spams, but some of the lists have. With it being closed lists, they can not post to the lists. This is the only way that we can think of to stop them. Unlike Maiser, where any one could send for a list of all members, on Rootsweb only the list owner may get the list. I really hate to do this, as it does prevent any one from posting. Some people belong to so many lists they really don't want join another one. I can understand that. Maiser I believe, at least on states lists are restricted. As list owners we feel this is the only way to protect ourselves against the spammers. We do not want what happened to Maiser to happen to Rootsweb. From what I understand, if someone tries to post a message to any of my lists and are not subscribed, the message will be forwarded to me. I can then see who sent it and what it contains. This way we can possibly find the spammers. If it is being sent from a person, and is of interest to the members I can then forward it to the list. I hope everyone understands. I have been transcribing all the names and dates from the ledger so that you might see if your relatives lived in Laurens Co., SC or surrounding areas between 1847-1858. The surname of BIRD and many others are listed. John B. Power moved his family from Laurens Co., SC in the fall of 1858 and continued his business in Pike Co., AR. We are currently transcribing the names of his customers in AR and hope to add those names to the web page in the near future. At a later date I will also be including all the surnames that I'm currently researching. So, stop by my web page for a visit and see if your relatives traded with Powers Shop in SC between 1847-1858. 3. Looking for mother's cousin: Her name is Jean (BIRD) Abrams. Her parents were Myra (Sutherland) and Fred BIRD. Myra and Fred were married prior to 1917 when they went to Persia (Iran), he as a political science professor, she as medical missionary. They returned to U.S., divorced, and he became a full professor at Columbia U. Our family never heard anything more about Fred BIRD, but wonder if he remarried and perhaps had more children or kept in touch with his daughter, Jean, or perhaps even his granddaughter, Sarah Abrams, born 1946. Jean may not be alive, but hopefully the daughter, Sarah, survives. Jean acquired Myra (Sutherland)Bird's genealogy papers and I'd like see what work she did. Thanks, dana(HI) dana(HI)

    2. I am forwarding this message from Dayna Cohen Mc Mullen, she has explained it so much better than I. Please read carefully. Thank you, Sharon --------------------- Forwarded message: From: [email protected] (Dayna Cohen McMullen) Resent-from: [email protected] To: [email protected] Date: 97-07-18 08:47:39 EDT May I have your attention for a moment? There is a "person" called Cliff Shaw who has set up a new web site called GenForum who has ....let's say..."taken without permission" all the names and their spelling variations from John Fuller and Chris Gant's site for our mailing list. John & Chris' site is called "Genealogy Resources On The Internet" and is located at: <http://members.aol.com/johnf14246/internet.html> GenForum is located at: http://www.geocities.com/ and I am asking you to please boycott his site. Cliff has violated copyright issues. John and Chris have worked very hard to create their huge and useful site. They asked permission and cooperated with EVERY listowner to provide a site where folks like you could find out what surname and regional lists were available. This Cliff person was too lazy to find the surnames and every spelling variation on his own. He apparently copied everything at his site from John and Chris' work. I am placing in my signature block a blurb about "Genealogist against plagerism--Boycott GenForum" to show my support of the effort to prevent copying someone else's hard work. If you care about what happens to your free resources on the Internet, you will also consider showing your support too by not posting to Cliff's site and keeping our surname lists as the main clearinghouse of our surname info. Please realize that the spelling variations are not listed at each surname. You have to use his search engine and type in each spelling variation and then compare to the list at John & Chris' site to see what Cliff has done. If you choose to check it for yourself, try an unusual name at John & Chris's site and write down all the spelling variations and then go to GenForum and check it. What Cliff has done is extremely lazy, unoriginal, and unethical. Please treat it as such. It's been suspected that his site is an effort to eventually use your hard earned research to make money for himself. Thanks and your comments are welcome. 1. From Listowner - Copyright violation
    2. Hello everyone, Was easiest to send this to all my lists at once. There is a GenForum on the internet that has stolen my copyright to all of my surname lists. In fact this man has stolen about every surname list there is an put it on his web site. People then are posting messages to his site instead of to the surname lists. This can cause our lists great harm. People will start posting messages, that just sit there, instead of to the list where someone will read them. As a list owner, I ask you not to post there. He never asked permission to use my surname lists. All listowners are requesting their lists be removed immediately. He is even using states and counties, which is direct violation of USGENWEB and WORLDGENWEB. I requested removal of mine today, I will check in a couple of days and see if they have been removed yet.
