A group of citizens called the Covington Fencibles (homeguards) was organized by Hiram S. Travis in 1845. They had their first meeting at the George Treible Hotel in Dalveville, August 22, 1846. They were subject to the military laws of Pennsylvania, they existed until 1861. The first uniform was Scotch Plaid Coat and white pantaloons, black hat wityh white feathers, red top and plate (1847). Issac Bird and Joseph Bird joined in 1856. 3. Does anyone have a decendent list for the Byrds of Westover Plantation? I am trying to locate a connection to a Peter Byrd b. abt 1860 in VA. The connection would be through a marriage of possible sister of Peter to a Robert Tate. Tates and Byrds were traveling preachers and I am still trying to locate census records, etc, According to a great-aunt and a grandmother, we are supposed to be decendents of William Byrds. Both aunt and grandmother died before I started doing genealogy and I didn't listen when I shoulda. Shirley Moore [email protected]

    1. BIRD/BYRD--late 1700's-early 1800's--KY
    2. Hello, Can anyone help me identify the parents of Elizabeth BIRD (nicknamed Betsy or Clarkey), b. ca. 1806 in KY, who married in Clark Co., KY, Benjamin Franklin Tuttle, b. 1798 in VA (son of John Tuttle who moved from VA to KY). Census records indicate that after residing a short time in Clay Co., KY, Elizabeth and Benjamin lived most of their married lives in Estill Co., KY, where at least seven of their ten children were born. Family legend says she served as a local midwife and was always ready to help those in need; census records identify Benjamin as a schoolteacher. Recently I received information from a family researcher that Elizabeth's father may have been Richard Bird/Byrd, who married Cassandra ____, but no evidence was furnished. Any help in identifying the BIRD/BYRD family from which Elizabeth came would be most appreciated. Mary Ellen Sharp [email protected] or [email protected]

    1. BIRD POEM 3
    2. Paul or Dana
    3. "I must suffer for deserting From the brig Niagara; Read this letter, brothers, sisters, 'Tis the last you'll have from me." Sad and gloomy was the morning Bird was ordered out to die Where's the breast not dead to pity But for him would have sigh Lo! he fought so brave at Erie, Freely bled and nobly dared Let his courage plead for mercy, Let his precious life be spared See him march and bear his fetters, harsh they clang upon the ear; But his step is fir and manly, For his heart ne'er harbored fear See, he kneels upon his coffin, Sure his death can do no good Spare him! Hark! O God, they've shot him! Oh! his bosom stream with blood. Farewell, Bird, Farewell forever. Friends and home he'll see no more; but his mangled corpse lies buried On Lake Erie's distant Shore. Walter Clark Eden Center, February 11, 1895

    2. Paul or Dana
    3. continued: Aye! Behold him! See him, Perry! In the self same ship they fought; Though his mess-mates fall around him Nothing can his sould afright. But behold, a ball has struck him See the crimson current flow! "Leave the deck!" Exclaimed brave Perry "no!" Cried Bird, "I will not go" "Here on deck I took my station Ne'er will Bird his colors fly; I'll stand by you, gallant captain, Till we conqueor or we die." Still he fought, though faint and bleeding, Till our Stars and Stripes arose, Victory having crowned our efforts, All triumphant o'er our foes And did Bird receive a pension? Was he to his friends restored? No, nor never to his bosm clapsed the maid his heart adored. But there came most dismal tidings From Lake Erie's distant shore; Better far if Bird had perished 'Midst the battle's awful roar. "Dearest parents," said the letter "This will bring sad news to you' Do not mourn your first beloved, Though this brings his last adieu. Continued BIRD POEM 3

    1. James Bird/Poem
    2. Paul or Dana
    3. My uncle, who passed away, left this poem he had in his family notes. If anyone can identify anything, dates, time, place, events, I would be very appreciative: THE BALLAD OF JAMES BIRD In "Everybody's Column" of Feb. 5, "A.J.W." asks for the author of James Bird. "Mrs. C.M.F.," under date of Feb. 8, gives Chas. Miner as the author. I have the poem, given to me by my grandmother, who died several years ago. She often related to me the story of the desertion and murder, as she termed it, of Bird. "Judge E.F. Warren" of Fredonia brought as his contribution tothe relic department the military coat and sword of James Bird, who was shot upon a charge of desertion from the Niagara at Erie, PA, in the War of 1812. he also contributed a copy of the old and popular ballad written upon the subject by Lawyer Price, then of Mayville, which has long been out of print. JAMES BIRD Sons of pleasure, listen to me, And ye daughters, too, give ear; You a sad and mornful story, As was ever told shall hear. Hull, you know, his troops surrendered, and defenseless left the West; But our forces quick assembled the invader to resist Among the troops that marched to Erie Were the Kinston Volunteers; Capt. Thomas then commanded, To protect our west frontiers Tender were the scenes of parting; Mothers wrung their hands and cried, Maidens wept, their swains in secret, Fathers strove their hearts to hide. But there is one among the number, Tall and graceful is his mein, Firm his step, his look undaunted Scarce a nobler youth was seen. One sweet kiss he snatched from Mary crav'd his mother's paryer once more, Pressed his father's hand, and left them, For Lake Erie's distant shore. Mary tried to say farewell, James, Waved her hand, buth nothing spoke; Good bye, Bird, may heaven protect you, From the rest at parting broke. Soon they came where noble Perry Had assembled all his fleet; There the gallant Bird enlisted, Hoping soon the foe to meet Where is Bird? The battle rages, Is he in the strife, or no? Now the cannons roar tremendous Dare he meet the hostile foe? Continued next message BIRD POEM 2

As I recall, someone said to put a slash (/) between the % and the 7...tried it and it worked--or maybe the / went before the %...seems more likely. In any case, I got through and didn't save a bookmark. Tom

    1. William Byrd
    2. Dennis Pearson
    3. William Byrd of 2242 N Carlisle St, Philadelphia, PA 19132-4505 seems to have changed his name from Joseph John French. Investigation shows he was adopted. Did he assume the surname of his natural parent(s)? Also his DOL shows a birthdate of 12-00-43. This obviously is not correct. We believe it is 12-29-43, but not absolutely certain. Attempts to go further on this have failed since he has no listed telephone. Anyone from Philadelphia interested? Contact me first.
