    1. SHERWOOD BIRD/BYRD, LENOIR COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA
    2. SHERWOOD BIRD/BYRD was born ca 1805 and died ca 1872. He married PENELOPE "PENNY" TILGHMAN (TILLMAN) in Lenoir County. Although most all of the BIRD/BYRD families left Lenoir County in the early 1800s, SHERWOOD seems to be the only intact family that remained in Lenoir County. He is in the 1850 , 1860, etc. Census of Lenoir County with his family. Also in the 1850 Lenoir County Census, NANCY BIRD is with her children ALEXANDER, MARGARET, & SHERROD, also in all probability her mother CATHERINE TILGHMAN who is living with her. In 1860 CATHERINE TILGHMAN is living with her son in Greene County, but NANCY and her children are gone and who her husband was and where she and her children MARGART and SHERROD went to is a mystery. Her son ALEXANDER came to Leon County prior to 1860 and settled in Wakulla County with his wife prior to going to war and being killed. Who were the parents of SHERWOOD and the husband of NANCY ? Since both married TILGHMAN girls, they were most likely brothers. SHERWOOD had a large family. One of his sons was JOSHUA who married MARGARET "MAGGIE " PHILLIPS. They had children THOMAS M. BYRD, LOUISA "LUDDIE", NANCY GABRILLA "NANNIE, MARY, and MAUDE. If you have any information concerning the above, no matter how sparce, please get in touch with me. JOHN B YRD

    3. >I might be interested in buying the Byrd book. I have been researching >my Bird/Byrds for 30 years. But, if the author will not reprint, what >can we do? Is it in a library anywhere? Who has a copy? >What is the title? Launa, You perhaps should have addressed this to someone other than me, as I cannot answer those questions. I do know that the author, Lloyd Bailey, lives in Yancey Co., N.C., and has concentrated on history of that area. His address is Lloyd Bailey, 4122 Deepwood Circle, Durham, NC 27707. He has done a number of books, I understand; but I have seen only the Heritege of the Toe River Valley. It includes some Byrd material, none of which was of any help to me. I don't know if his Byrd book includes any Byrd lines prior to the Revolution...outside N.C., etc. If you have any Byrds in the Yancey, Burke, Buncombe County area of North Carolina, I'll be happy to check the index of this book for specific names. But I repeat, to all who may be reading this, the book I have does not cover family lines throughout the rest of the country. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who might have reference to a Susan Byrd, b. ca. 1790, who m. Jacob Honeycutt in the general area I've referred to. Regards, Tom

    1. From List Owner - Halberts, Bath, OH
    2. Good morning everyone. Just wanted to send this message out, especially to new researchers. The company listed in subject, surfaces from time to time. There are also similar companies all over the US and in Canada and England. What you get is a mailing from them saying they are now ready to publish your family history. The letter will state your surname, tell you that they have the family history, when they came over to the US, etc. Usually the price runs (I believe now) $39.95. They try to make you believe that what you will be getting is a whole history of YOUR line, and up to the present time. Ask yourself one question first, were you asked by this company to submit your information? The answer is usually no. What you will actually get is a brief history of that surname. Then, basically what you get is a list of names and addresses of people of people in the US having your surname. More like a telephone book. The Post Office has been after them for years, finally does get something against them, shut them down, and then they start all over again. So watch anything, especially coming out of Bath, OH, and read carefully. They say that if you are not satisfied they will refund your money. But, while you might be one of the lucky ones to get your money back, more than likely you will not. What they hope to hit is new people starting in research that do not know much of the history yet. I received one such mailing not too long ago on the Straight line. I really had quite a laugh, the letter stated that the first known Straight in the US was in 1700+ (whatever), and it is well documented that the Straight's were here at least by 1652. So they were over 100 years off. Hope this will help some avoid being taken in by these people. I am trying to get the author, Lloyd Bailey to reprint the book. If >any of you are interested in the book, please contact me. We have about 8 >people so far who would like a copy of the book. >Barbara Ward I had heard at one point that Lloyd Bailey had enough information to do a separate Byrd book (another pun). I talked to him over the phone a year or so ago and he made no mention of this book. I'm surprised that if it was published earlier that he did not have more Byrd material in his Toe River Valley book. I'm interested, of course, in the book--but only if I can access it in the next month or two, as I am about to put my own book of family history to bed. If anyone happens to have a copy of the Byrd book, I'd appreciate a lookup of the lone Byrd presently nesting in my family tree. Regards, Tom ([email protected])
