    3. Hi Mike, I have corresponded with a person who, I believe, has done extensive research on your Bird line. She believes that her Birds and mine have a connection somewhere. My Birds were in Spalding and surrounding areas. My family emigrated to the US in the early 1850's and settled in Oakland CO Michigan. We haven't made that connection, yet. Hopefully, it will happend some day. I haven't written to her in some time, but I will be glad to pass on any information you may think is helpful. I know she has mentioned the Bird Custard and connections with Birds who were members of Parliament. Doug Bird Saginaw, MI

    1. [BIRD-L] Birds in Civil War -- 2nd TN Vol Infantry Regiment
    2. Fellow Bird Researchers: I found several Birds/Byrds in a list of members of the 2nd TN Vol Infantry: The 2nd Tennessee was a Civil War (Union) volunteer infantry regiment formed August 20, 1861 at Camp Dick Robinson, Kentucky. Nearly all of the men were from East Tennessee. Colonel James P. T. Carter was in command. The regiment was at Wildcat, Mill Springs and Stones River, but saw little action. In the fall of 1862 it was at Cumberland Gap. The regiment was converted to a mounted infantry in June, 1863 and was one of the regiments in pursuit of Confederate raider John Hunt Morgan through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio in July, 1863. Returning to Tennessee, the unit helped recapture Cumberland Gap and was heavily engaged at the Battle of Blue Springs on October 10, 1863. A month later on November 6, two thirds of the regiment was captured in a rout at the Battle of Rogersville in Hawkins County, Tennessee. About two thirds of those captured died at either Belle Isle or Andersonville prison camps before the end of the war. What remained of the regiment after Rogersville was assigned to duty in and around Knoxville and Cumberland Gap until it was formally mustered out on August 3, 1865. The Table of Contents for information on this infantry is: http://home.fuse.net/damathew/contents.html Here are the Birds/Byrds: Bird, James A; 2nd Lieutenant; F; Hawkins Co TN; 43; 26 Oct 1861 - 7 Nov 1862. 1. [BIRD-L] Birds in Civil War -- 4th TN Volunteer Inf. Regiment
    2. Bird/Byrd Researchers: I found some Birds in Civil War lists for TN. I will do separate posts for each list so it isn't too confusing: I found the following Birds (no Byrds) on a website with excerpts from "Forgotten Soldiers: History of the 4th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment (USA) 1863-1865" by Eddie M. Nikazy published by Heritage Books Inc. and is available through them at: 1540-E Pointer Ridge Place Bowie MD 20718 (800) 398-7709 or Thomas W. Gentry at: Rt. 1 Box 2800 Mountain City TN 37683. "The 4th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment was one of many Southern Units which fought for the preservation of the Union during the Civil War. The 4th Regiment was composed primarily of men from the eastern mountains of Tennessee. Men for the regiment came from "Greene, Grainger, Carter, Johnson, Cocke and Washington Counties. The majority of men enrolled in Greene County. .....The book Tennesseeans in the Civil War published in 1964 by the Tennessee Civil War Centennial Commission states that the 4th Tennessee Regiment was recruited in East Tennessee in the spring of 1863 and that seven Companies were mustered in at Nashville on June 15 1863." The entire list is at: http://www.tiac.net/users/mkatzman/jct/john4inf.html Bird, David F. priv., Co. E 19 enrolled in Loudon, TN, b. Greene Co. Bird, Jacob N. corp., Co. D 20 enrolled at Rutledge, TN Bird, James priv., Co. D 19 enrolled in Greeneville, father William Bird of Greeneville, TN * Bird, James priv., Co. Those marked with "++" indicates they were reported as deserters and then returned to duty. Janet Hunter

Do you <<eat it or use it to load a gun? <<Grant __________________ Hi Grant, Alfred Bird was, by trade, an experimental chemist and, when it was discovered that his wife couldn't tolerate custard (egg-custard in those days) he investigated. He found the cause to be live, yeast-based products or eggs and so he embarked into research into products which she could take without any adverse reaction. In 1843 he succeeded with a product called 'Birds Fermenting Powder' which could be used as a substitute to live yeast in baking bread, buns and cakes. Since there was an immediate commercial demand, he began to produce 'Birds Baking Powder', and, encouraged by its success researched further and arrived at 'Birds Custard Powder'. As a further point of interest, after representations to the, then War Minister, the Duke of Newcastle, the product was shipped in large quantities to help support the UK's War effort in the Crimea. {So I guess that custard powder is used to feed the men who load the gun} Cheers, Mike (another non-cook)

    3. Hi all, I've just joined this list so thought I would post my area of interest I'm researching into the history of Alfred Bird (1811-1878) who invented custard powder in the UK. Coming forward is OK but going backwards in history is a bit stickier. In particular, I am trying to prove a reference on the cenotaph of his son (also Alfred) in Robin Hood cemetery, Birmingham, UK which states that he was a "descendant of John Bird 1709-1770 who was distinguished by his services to astronomy and navigation by his accurate division of the Greenwich and other quadrants and for the construction of the standard yard." Particularly frustrating is that in all the references to John Bird (1709-1770) he never seems to have married or had children. So maybe this is family folklore or maybe I'm not looking in the right areas. Does this link with anybody else's research please or .....? Thanks in anticipation > Mike (michael.lowcock@capgemini.co.uk) > > Interests LOWCOCK (Derbyshire ) > FROGGATT (Derbyshire) > BIRD (as in custard and/or astronomy > Warwickshire, London, Lincs) > OLLIER (Cheshire, Ayrshire, Ireland > RAISBECK (Cumbria) > > > > >

Bye for now George ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: Internet Access Fees, Look Out!!!! Author: MARGARET FLANAGAN at DOMPO1 Date: 2/10/99 2:40 PM Thought that I would forward this to you. I know some of you are ardent internet users. A co-worker's wife just forwarded this to us. Best wishes for preventing this new pocket grabber. Everyone take care, Margaret ______________________________ Forward Header __________________________________ Subject: Internet Access Fees, Look Out!!!! Author: GREG CORDES at DOMPO1 Date: 2/10/99 2:35 PM Just thought you'd all be interested. Our phone companies and elected officals want to give it to us again. Enjoy reading. Greg Subject: FW: Internet Access Fees - Vote No READ THIS................Believe it or not Congress will be voting in less than two weeks. CNN stated that the new Congress is scheduled, in two weeks time, to decide whether to allow or not allow your telephone company to levy a charge on your phone bill equal to a Long Distance call EACH time you access the Internet. Tell your Congressman to vote against Internet Access Fees! If EACH one of us, forward this message on to others in a hurry, we may be able to prevent this injustice from happening! We all need to respond to this-don't want to lose another one of our "freedoms." And they talk about Bill Gates having a monopoly-HA!!!! This is one more way the phone company can get to our money. I am sure a lot of peoplewill have to restrict their use of the internet if Congress passes this. Check out the website <http://www.house/gov/writerep> to find the address or phone number of your elected official. --------------F837A7E36AFADE9DD8E83899--
