    1. [BIRD-L] Washington Co TN/Gates,Hertford Co NC & New Va Southside lists
    2. Fellow Bird Researchers: First -- at the end of this list is a message announcing the establishment of new non-rootsweb lists for several Southside VA Counties. Thought you'd be interested. Second -- frustrated with my Byrd's I am turning to an even bigger problem researching my Margaret MARTIN who married Isaac Horton 1810 in Washington Co TN. Martin is exponentially more common than Byrd and the less we say about Margaret the better and she is the only one of my 8 ggg grandparents in Greene Co I can't out of the state. Anyway, I am running across AMOS Byrd and other Byrd families in both Washington and Greene Co TN where Isaac and Margaret ended up. Are any of you following these Byrd's. I am copying some deed and marriage records on them, which I will post to the list eventually for the archives, but I just wondered if any of you were especially interested. Second, I am also looking at my Marsh/Harrell/Landing and possibly JORDAN ancestors in Gates/Hertford/Bertie Cos NC 1750s - early 1800s. There are several Byrds in tax lists, etc. there. Any of you looking to these as known ancestors?? Hope you all have a Happy Easter. 1. [BIRD-L] Rhett Butler if Charleston SC
    2. Tom Atkinson
    3. Rhett Butler of Charleston, SC- c 1830-1890- Posted April 1, 1999 I am looking for any info on ancestors/descendants of a most interesting individual, said to be from Charleston SC, from a book written in the late 1930's. He was supposedly from a prominent family, but left following a scandal which resulted in the shaming of a local lady. Her reputation was "ruined". He was in the Jonesboro/Atlanta Ga. area in early 1860's and entered the Confederacy late in the war after it was a lost cause. Some referred to him as "Captain Butler". He married the widow of a Charles Hamilton who was a casualty of that war. She was of Irish ancestry and temperament, the dau of a John O'Hara. There was one issue of this union, but her untimely and unfortunate demise as the result of a horse riding accident precluded descendants. She retained family property in Clayton County as well as being a very successful entrepreneur in the Atlanta area. Their spirited marriage, however, failed, and he expressed a callous disregard for her future at their very emotional parting. A hint was provided by her following this painful split when she vowed to restore their marriage by any means possible. She was described as determined and resourceful. He said he was returning to Charleston to restore what dignity he had of his life. The question is what happened following his departure from Atlanta. Did he remarry her and leave descendants or marry another? The same questions exist for his wife. The complete lack of any property or other legal records may be due to numerous fires in the area at the time, although most people are familiar with these individuals. Allied families include Hamilton, Wilkes, Kennedy, Tarleton, Watling. I would appreciate any information or speculation of this fascinating couple. This query is prepared for and in the spirit of April 1 1999............. I will keep a journal on similar replies. Please reply directly to prevent unnecessary and unwelcome board messages. 2. This is the URL for the Family Research Site: http://32.96.111.13/default.asp It is(as of 8:25 p.m. EST, March 30) working; it is slow; I only tried one name; got the same misleading Ancestral File information that makes it look like the second wife is the only wife BUT I did get 19 websites for possible gg grandmother Permelia Williams; the site gets too busy, but retrying is like getting a busy signal on AOL -- you usually get through within the next two or three tries. Looks like it will be great and we don't have to sign up for our alotted half hour at a busy FHC or library! Janet Hunter

This comes from a credible source - our main computer people. 2. This does NOT mean the lists are getting infected. 3. Before people get confused again, let me clarify their message. They say the email message with the subject noted has an attached file. They say don't even open the message, just delete it. Opening the email message WILL NOT spread the virus. Opening the attached Word file WILL spread the virus. However, their advice to just delete the email message itself is sound advice, because some people will open the email, then be tempted to open the Word file just to see what happens (sort of like the apple in the Garden of Eden). They are saying, "don't tempt fate, delete the email message." Good advice. 4. You'll see that CNet has information on this. That implies this is not limited to IU's mail system (which is logical). -------- -----Original Message----- From: IU Information Technology Security Office Sent: Saturday, March 27, 1999 1:26 AM Subject: E-mail virus/worm spreading rapidly at IU If you receive an e-mail message with the subject: "Important Message From ..." Do NOT open it, and DELETE it immediately. The message contains a Microsoft Word file attachment, which contains a dangerous macro "worm" (similar to a virus). If you open this file, the macro will send multiple copies of the file and worm to many other users, hence causing it to spread extremely rapidly. It will also infect your machine with a version of itself that will be present in any new Microsoft Word documents you create. This is not a hoax. The Indiana University IT Security Office and UITS have determined that the Microsoft Word macro "worm" is loose on the IU-Bloomington and IUPUI campus. This worm is also infecting other sites around the world. See the last section of this message for further technical details. WHAT WE'RE DOING We have reconfigured the main IUB and IUPUI mail relay systems to attempt to detect possible copies of the macro, and to return the message to the sender rather than allowing it be delivered. Although this may be limiting some legitimate mail, it has arrested the propagation outside of the campus Microsoft Exchange systems, which many faculty and staff use as their primary e-mail service. We disabled the Microsoft Exchange system for a period early Friday evening in order to temporarily halt propagation of the worm, and to allow time for a solution to be found to the problem. The Microsoft Exchange system will be returning to service shortly, although it may be necessary to configure it to permit sending messages to only one recipient at a time. We hope to have access to a better solution sometime over the weekend. Symantec (the company responsible for Norton AntiVirus) is working on protection and "disinfectants" for this problem. Once this update is available, we will send out another message to all IU e-mail addresses notifying users of the steps they should take to "disinfect" a machine that has been affected. In the mean time, if you haven't already, you should download and install Norton AntiVirus as soon as possible. It is available from SoftServe, or from IUWare: (this applies only to IU people) FURTHER TECHNICAL DETAILS A worm replicates itself by trying to send multiple copies of itself to other recipients, who, in turn, execute the worm and do the same. This particular worm is in the form of a Microsoft Word macro. An unsuspecting user receives a message with an attached Word document that contains the macro. If the user opens the document and allows the macro to execute (either by having disabled this protection in MS Word, or by confirming on a dialog box), the macro will execute and propagate itself. This macro also modifies your default document template to cause all new documents that you write to contain the worm. If you later send someone one of these documents, the recipient could start the propagation again, using your document as the base. HOW TO FIND OUT MORE C/Net's news.com has a story on this virus/worm: http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,34334,00.html?st.ne.fd.gif.e Updates specific to the situation at Indiana University will be provided at the following location: http://www.indiana.edu/~itiu/ --------------4D1620DF2D8D--

    1. [BIRD-L] Byrd, Duren family bible
    2. Scott Terri L
    3. Hi..found this on ebay..please read below for their description, once again I have nothing to do with seller, just want it to have a home..where it belongs.. Terri go to www.ebay.com do a search for family bible..sale ends in 4 days.. This is the family Bible of a family out of Dubuque, Iowa. The family name is Duren, and this leather-bound bible, weighing in at around 5 pounds, was presented to Charles McKean and Gertrude Eliza Duren at the Congregational Church in Dubuque. At the end of the Old Testament, there is a section for 'Family Record', and handwritten is the family record of the Durens. Here is a listing of Births, Deaths, and Marriages. The last Birth entry is for December 23, 1872, belonging to James Craig Bryd (Byrd?). The last entry for marriages is For James Craig Bryd and Fanny Duren on July 2, 1941. There is a WONDERFUL c.1940's photo showing a family gathering, and a Lovely Victorian notecard. These are included. The bible itself is over 1300 pages, as the type is READABLE! and the pages are thicker than what we have available to us now. This was DESIGNED to be passed down from generation to generation. It is in Fantastic shape for being over 130 years old! In fact there is quite a bit of the gold on the pages, and on the embossing on the binding. What a splendid Dare to do, what you Dare to Dream.!!

He has a large farm of 240 acres, on which there is one of the finest orchards in Cedar Falls Town-ship; he has over 400 trees of all varieties, of the following sorts of fruit: Apples, peaches, cherries, quinces, plums, besides a thrifty and well kept vineyard. Mr. Bird's success with fruit on the mountain has convinced him that it is one of the best locations for that branch of agriculture in Arkansas. Mr. Bird is a native of Walker County, Ga., where he was born October 7, 1852; is the son of Jacob and Nancy (Brickey) Bird. They were natives of Tennessee, father born in 1814 and mother in 1813; they were married in Tennessee and were the parents of thirteen children, seven sons and six daughters, of whom John, the subject of this sketch, was the tenth child in order of birth. Father and mother died in Walker County, Ga., the former in 1868, the latter in 1880; they were long time members of the Baptist church. Our subject was married in Yell County, Ark., July 11, 1880, to Miss Nancy A. Marcum, who was a native of Yell County, born April 8, 1862. They are the parents of six children, three sons and three daughters, two of whom are dead: Nancy E. Maggie J., John A., Jacob W., Mary A. (deceased), and one died unnamed, and Mrs. Bird departed this life November 6. 1889. Mr. Bird is an intelligent and enterprising citizen, taking an active interest in the advancement of all things pertaining to Cedar Falls Township, and politically votes with the Democratic party. ------------------------------------------------------------------ William T. Bird, of the firm of D. J. Bird & Snyder, dealers in general merchandise at Springfield, is a native of Monroe County, Alabama, where he first saw the light of day in 1857. His parents were Georige Thomas and Malinda A. (Gilliand) Bird, who removed from Alabama to Conway County, Arkansas, just prior to the breaking out of the late war. Mr. Bird was a farmer by occupation, and a worthy member of the Masonic fraternity. He was killed near Batesville, Ark., in 1866, while in the service of his country in the Federal army, leaving a family of four children to be reared and cared for by a widowed mother. Mrs. Bird departed this life in 1886, a devout member of the Methodist Church. William T. Bird is the third of two sons and two daughters, all of whom are yet living. Mr. Bird grew to manhood on a farm in Conway County with nothing but the country schools for educational advantages. On the death of his father, the main support of the family devolved upon him, which deprived him of the advantages common to most boys. In 1878 he was married to Miss Sarah E. James, a native of Mississippi and a daughter of Samuel James, who died in that State. Mrs. Bird afterward came with an elder brother and sister to Conway County, and is the mother of six children. Mr. B. followed the occupation of farming till December, 1888, when he engaged in his present business. He owns a farm of 160 acres, nearly 100 acres of which is under cultivation; also owns business property in Springfield, all of which is his own accumulation. Politically, he is a Republican, and is a member of Mason Camp, Sons of Veterans, at Center Ridge.

    1. [BIRD-L] Byrd Family of Falls Mills Va.
    2. Hello, I am interested in any information on Charles Edgar and Annie Margaret (Hackworth) Byrd. They were born, (I am guessing) ca. 1870's to 1880's. They should be in the Tazewell co. census in 1880, 1890, 1900 and 1910. They moved to Huntington WV around 1920. Some of the 12 children were, Clyde, (my grandfather), Howard, Harry, Earnest, Sybil, Orville, Charles L., and Earnestine. Any information would be greatly appreciated! I apologize for my lack of knowledge on the Byrd family, but I am just beginning my research on my mom's side of the family and have not yet found anything on them. Thank you! John Sullivan
