BY JAMES SAVAGE, transcribed and corrected by Robert Kraft 1994 assisted by Benjamin Dunning. [[Corrected electronic version copyright Robert Kraft, July 1994]] I am taking the liberty to split it up into its original 4 volumes and posting it to the books online website. http://genweb.net/~books/ http://genweb.net/~books/savage/ http://genweb.net/~books/savage/SavageVol1.txt A-C http://genweb.net/~books/savage/SavageVol2.txt D-J http://genweb.net/~books/savage/SavageVol3.txt K-R http://genweb.net/~books/savage/SavageVol4.txt S-Z each file is still large but less than 2 megabytes. Robert if you are still at UPenn I hope that is OK with you. PC users can get the full zipped 2MB SavageDictionary file at MomJ <momj@mindless.com> website: http://capecodmouse.com/ http://capecodmouse.com/temp/savages.zip Robert Kraft has some other interest material at his old gopher site re: gopher://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/11/journals/kraftpub/ including some nice poems and diary transcriptions. I should add that the Savage book is very old and out of date, and hard to read with all the abbreviations. Many families have had genealogies done on them, and many towns have later and better genealogies on various families. Also the Great Migration Project at NEHGS is the latest, most complete, fully referenced, and documented work of this type. It (GMP) covers only the immigrant family not the descendants, but references other works (if available) where descendants and ancestors can be found. Only families that arrived in or before 1633 are available now in the first 3 volumes, later volumes will have later arrivals. http://www.nehgs.org/salesdept/ne.htm The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633 By Robert Charles Anderson, F.A.S.G. This three volume set is the most accurate, up-to-date information on over 900 early New England families by providing a consistent format for the information on each individual or family, which includes their port or country of origin, if known; the date and ship on which they arrived in New England, if known: the earliest known record of the individual or family; their first residence and subsequent residence, when known; return trips to their country of origin, whether temporary or permanent; and marriages, births, deaths and other important family relationships. To find the same information elsewhere, you'd have to refer to as many as 15 different books and dozens of historical records, if you could even gain access to them. Alphabetically organized by last name, it opens with an introoductory discussion of the methodology and sources used to develop the entries. There is also the "Phantom File," which includes names not covered in the main entries, along with the reason that they are not included. In some cases, it is because the individual actually arrived in New England at a later date than the period covered here. In other cases, it is because there is no primary evidence that he or she ever existed, as in the case of names that were once misread, then repeated incorrectly in the literature. This project reflects immense scholarly resourcefullness and is a tremendous source of helpful and pertinent genealogical information that should be of interest to the historian and the novice researcher alike. NEHGS. 1996. Index. 2,386pp. $125.00 Member price $112.50 Item #S2-84432 And of course the The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 1847-1994 fully indexed 9 CD ROM set is just an amazing resource for the serious New England genealogists. http://www.nehgs.org/salesdept/cdrom.htm Best Regards David C. 1. [BIRD-L] Rootsweb needs our support
    2. LCleversey
    3. Hi everyone, Rootsweb really need the support. Only 7% of Rootsweb users are contributors. Last months report talked getting commercial funding, hummm will we start seeing Ad Banners like on Geocities? Think about it, is $20.00 a year really that much to ask of each user of Rootsweb. Read below of what Karen and Brian want to do with Rootsweb and how your $20.00 a year will help. WHY DOES ROOTSWEB NEED YOUR SUPPORT? by Dr. Brian Leverich <leverich@rootsweb.com> Sometimes it is difficult for users to understand the costs involved in operating RootsWeb and why it is worth genealogists' time and money to support RootsWeb. For example, take the United States census. RootsWeb is currently providing server support to the USGenWeb Archives and Census Projects as they bring the U.S. census online. Our goal is to have both a searchable index to the census *AND* images of all the pages available on an open basis for all Internet genealogists. Our best estimate is that bringing the census online will require about 3.6 terabytes of data storage. That means we will need about 200 18 GB hard disks, and each of those disks costs about $1,000. That means the data storage alone is going to cost $200,000, and that doesn't include the servers and the bandwidth to make that storage accessible over the Web. Is $200,000 a lot of money? Well, sort of. Regardless of how much they want to help, Karen and Brian couldn't pay for that even if they mortgaged their house and cashed in their pension savings. On the other hand, $200,000 is only about 67 cents per user at RootsWeb. That is about 1/100 of what some commercial firms are charging for data they have locked up in members-only areas. Bringing the U.S. census online is not the only project RootsWeb supports. We are hosting literally hundreds of other data projects, some American and many for other countries (like the British FreeBMD Project). If all (or even if most) of our users were contributors, there is a lot RootsWeb could be doing to accelerate the rate at which public records are brought online and opened to the public. You can help us bring those records online. For details about support levels/benefits and payment options, visit <http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html> or send e-mail to <RW-info@rootsweb.com>. 1. [BIRD-L] Baylor Bird/Byrd
    2. Hello, I'm a new subscriber to the BIRD list and want to post what I have so far on my family. I first discovered that my gr-grandmother Sarah Ellen Garton's parents were George Garton and Eliza L. Byrd/Bird (b. 1827 NC) who were married in Williamson Co., TN 8 Aug 1844. George and Eliza then migrated to Ripley Co., MO where they appeared on the 1850 census there with their children. Living next door was James Byrd, age 58 b. NC (1792) wife Sarah age 46 b. NC (1804) and is, I believe the father of Eliza L. There is a marriage of James S. Byrd to Sarah Ann Buck in Williamson Co., TN in 1837 and I believe she is #2 marriage for James. A check of the Williamson Co. records revealed James Byrd was the admin. of the estate of Baylor Byrd in 1830. I then found that Baylor Byrd's wife Nancy filed for a pension on his Rev. War service (#R853) and the papers in this file reveal their marriage 4 Oct 1785 and a bible record naming the children as follows: 1. Catherine Byrd - July 9, 1786 2. Temple Byrd - 24 Oct, 1787 (court record in NC show Nancy was admin. on his estate - he died Dec 1809 without issue.) 3. Jenne Byrd - March 23, 1789 4. Richard Byrd - 25 July 1790 Caswell Co.,NC - d. bet 1837-1840 Williamson Co., TN - wife Sina Osburn is a widow on 1840 and 1850 census. 5. James S. Byrd - 5 April 1792 Caswell Co., NC - (is on census 1820 NC, 1830-1840 TN and 1850 MO. Not found in 1860, either died or moved on.) 6. John Byrd - 9 Feb 1794 Caswell Co., NC 7. Mary "Polly" Byrd Sept 1796 Caswell Co., NC 8. Sally Byrd 9 Feb 1799 Caswell Co., NC m. Elijah King Baylor Byrd/Bird is on the 1790-1810 census in Caswell Co., NC - Hillsborough Dist., St. Lukes Twp. He also appears on many land records "Caswell Co.,NC Will & Deed Abstracts" by Kendall/Donaldson 1983. I lost him in 1820 and by 1830 he has died in Williamson Co. I could find no record of a marriage to Nancy in either NC or VA. >From the Genforum website I received information that Baylor Bird is named as a son of Braxton Byrd/Bird and Mary Price of the Middlesex/King & Queen Co. area of Virginia. That marriage a matter of record in several places. James S. Byrd moved to Ripley Co., MO by 1850 and a Mary Byrd who lived with his family, died that year, age 82. Possibly an aunt as I think his grandmother, Mary Price would have been older. I do not know the name of his first wife, mother of the children shown on that census. James and Sarah are gone by 1860 and I would like to find where they went. The children of James S. Byrd and #1 wife as follows: 1. Eliza L. Byrd - b. 1827 NC m. George Garton 2. Susan Byrd - b. 1830 TN - not married by 1860 - lives with brother 3. Emile E. Byrd b. 1831 TN - m James Rawlings in Ripley Co., MO 4. Mary F. Byrd - b. 1832 TN - m. Joshua Jones in Riply Co., MO 5. Alpheous L. Byrd - b. 1833 TN - not married by 1860 - lives Ripley Co.MO with sister Susan 6. Sarah Aremintha Byrd - b. 1834 TN - m. Geo. W. Young Ripley Co., MO - - - - - #2 wife 7. James K. Byrd - b. 1840 TN 8. Edmond Byrd - b. 1842 TN Possibly James and Sarah moved on and someone out there looking for this family. I'm happy to share further details I have and would love to learn more of this line. Pamela Geisler Smith Gresham, OR

    1. [BIRD-L] Bird Marriages -- Gates Co NC
    2. Fellow Bird Researchers: Here are some Bird marriages in Gates County NC I ran across. I have no idea if these are related to my Birds of Sumner/Robertson Cos TN>Dade Co Missouri. The only name that I recognize is CROSS. My NC Gates ancestors lived near/bought land from Cyprian Cross and his descendants, relatives in 1700s, early 1800s. FYI, the first names, Aaron, Levi, Kedar, Moses, Elisha are VERY common in Gates/Hertford and environs. Hope this helps someone. 1. [BIRD-L] Elizabeth BIRD m. George SEXTON, Westfield MASS
    2. Fellow Bird/Byrd researchers: In the process of looking for some important scrap of paper, I came across the above couple headlining a ten page very, small print outline descendant tree. The information was sent to me by Rupert Sexton of Georgia. FYI, Sexton is my mother's maiden name (research stuck in Wake Co NC, Miller Sexton marries Lucy Deming Ford 1817, is in Wake Co War of 1812 regiments). My mother's mother was Lucy Belle MARSH, daughter of Wm. Michael Marsh and Casselia BIRD/BYRD, d/o Henry BYRD and Lucinda CHOATE, son of John BYRD and Nancy Couts of Robertson/Sumner Co TN. There is absolutely no information on Elizabeth Bird in the Sexton outline, but I will transcribe the information for Elizabeth and George. FYI the descendants of this couple followed a rather unusual migration pattern. Massachusetts>Long Island>SC and GA after Civil War. I guess they were involved in the Reconstruction? 1. James Sexton b. 1604 Limerick, Ireland, occupation Shipbuilder, wife unknown. 2. George Sexton Sr., b. 1632, England or Ireland. Came to America 1650-1660. Occupation Shipbuilder. Married Katherine BIRD (not clear where they were married, but children were born in Massachusetts beginning 1656. George died October 31, 1680, Westfield Massachusetts. June 10, 1663 George purchased land lying at Warrenoko River at Westfield from Thomas Cowper. He was agent or trader because he lived in Hartford, Windsor, Westfield and Boston. He and Thomas Molde were appointed to appraise all buildings in Westfield. Being a strong believer in naming traditions, their children were: Charles Sexton m. Sarah unk; Daniel; James; Joseph; Benjamin m. Mary STRONG; and John. Hope this helps someone. Janet Hunter

The odd thing about this court case is that this same story has been passed down through the descendants of a John Bird(bn. 1750's) wife Jane, who came to Lincoln Co. KY 1783. John Bird later came to Barren Co., Ky and married a second time to a Farris woman. Anyone who might have some information on this, please reply. Thanks, Dave Bird and Norman Warnell

    1. Unidentified subject!
    2. Hello All! I am desperately searching for a Lucy Byrd, born around 1900. Her mother's name was possibly Susan or Susannah, called Suzie. Lucy Byrd married Guy Evans, and her name was blacked out of the family Bible because her father didn't approve. I have no date on Lucy and Guy's marriage, but they did have three children in or around Charlotte, North Carolina. Helen Eloise Evans, born 1925 Lucy Juanita Evans, born 2-Dec-1927 Guy Rajah Evans, born 1929 Lucy left Guy while their children were still young. She later remarried to a John Forbes, and had at least two children, Roger and Patricia. I have no dates on this family whatsoever. John flew military command, and was at one point in charge of the Chicago airport. Lucy was a breeder and trainer of a type of dog called "Samoyed." She is pictured in at least two books on the subject, and the names of her family is listed. My grandmother, Lucy Juanita, would like to know where her mother is buried. If you have any information on Lucy Byrd Evans Forbes, please e-mail me: lucybyrd@iname.com Thanks, Nicole Hand Nicole Hand d. of Walter Hand s. of Phil Hicks Hand s. of Isaac Uriah Wilkes "Bud" Hicks s. of Isaac Madison Hicks s. of John Hicks and Elizabeth Bird ------------------------------------------------------------- Get free personalized email at http://www.switchboardmail.com

In the will of Joseph Bird of Hanover, Hunterdon Twp, NJ, dated 1733, he leaves to his sister "all the lands due me from my father's estate in the county of West Chester in the government of New York"..
