    1. [BIRD-L] Bird/Byrd/Burd
    2. HI.. I have TWO seperate lines of Byrd's......... One went south and one went west.... Here is my western bound Byrd's.... I have a Bird/Byrd/Burd ancestor which is on my husband's side. I don't know very much about her....but here is what I know: The following was taken from a little family booklet that a relative just took the time to write and send to several of us: I will type it just as he has written it: "In the year of 1815 in the state of Tennessee, a fullblood Choctaw baby was born. I can't find the names of her mother and father, but they named their baby Christina, which was unually written in the short form "Tennie." She was 21 years old when her folks were (by the order of the federal government) started on the "Trail of Tears" move to the Indian Territory. The Indian Removal Acto of May 28, 1830, moved the Choctaws to Indian Territory in 1836. Tennie's family either bought their way out of the march--they could well afford to--or just slipped away. That was the two ways they could have gotten out of coming to I.T. Both were common occurrences during the march. The soliders were sympathetic to their plight, for one thing, and the other reason for not guarding them closely was that each Indian who was let slip away was just one more Indian that the soliders didn't have to worry with. Tennie's folks settled around Casseville, Mo. There was a large group of her brothers and sisters; I can fine none of their names, except one sister's name was Sarah. Tennie married a man named BIRD/BYRD/BURD. In 1844, when Tennie was 29, on the 18th of November, a baby girl was born to her. The baby was named JULIA ANN BIRD. she had brothers and sisters, some of them settled in Arkansas and for a time some of granny's folks lived at Panama, Oklahoma. The BIRDS/BYRD/BURD moved to Crawford County, Arkansas before the war, near Van Buren, it was the home of her mother and step-father that JULA married her beau that she had met in Missouri....JAMES AKINS." More of the material continues: "The newly weds made their home with James's father, Jimmy Akins, nother of Greenwood......" Here are some of the children recorded that were born to JULA ANN BIRD and Jimmy Akins: John Nicklies, March 1, 1867, Greenwood, Sebastain County, Ark. Mary Ann, August 8, 1871, Greenwood, Sebastian County, Ark. George Washington, July 15, 1874, Texas James William (WILL) April 21, 1876, Greenwood Vandia Lee (Frost) May 1, 1879, Greenwood Victory (Vic) July 15, 1881, Greenwood Henry, March 17, 1884, Greenwood Minnie B., June 6, 1886, Greenwood Christinia (Tennie) March 13, 1888, Greenwood Havey Bishop, June 25, 1891, Greenwood They moved to the Indian Territory.....and.....she finally got her Civil War Widow's Pension granted, Oct 7, 1898.... certificate number 469508 and the money was sent to her on November 16, 1898. This is when she lived at Skullyville, OK..... She took the check to Keota, Ok.... When she had her first stroke (1914), she did not fully recover.... They doctors that were used were: Dr. Newman, Dr. Lett, Dr. Van Matri, and Dr Bush. The lawyer used by Julia Ann Bird Atkins was Clark from Stigler, Ok..... She died May 10, 1923....She was 78 years old and six months. She is buried in Ok...... Remember some of this is written just as it was written down... I do have a picture of Julia Ann Bird and James Akins.!!!!! Thanks!!!! kaite....

    1. [BIRD-L] Richard Bird
    2. Torres Household
    3. Someone e-mailed me but I couldn't answer at the e-mail address on his message, so I have to send it to the list so he'll get it. Hi. I don't know if we connect or not. I am assuming Larkin was a possible son of Richard. He was on the 1840 Estille county, Kentucky, census. He moved to Hendricks county, Indiana, sometime in the 1840's. My gr.gr.grandmother, Sarah Bird(Byrd?), his daughter, married Moses Alexander in Hendricks county in 1850. Larkin was dead by the 1850 census, but you see his wife as head of house, and some of his children on the Hendricks county census. His children on his will included both a Richard and John. John was aged 15 on the Indiana census. On the 1850 Estille county, Kentucky, census, we see a John Bird, his wife Polly and his children Mary Catherine, and Orthonile who was aged 2 at the time. Also in this household was an elderly Richard aged 75, born Virginia, and a Cassandra aged 60, born N. Carolina. I don't know that this is Larkin's mom; perhaps a previous wife was. There is one other thing that ties this family together. Sarah and Moses Alexander moved to Putnam, Co., Mo., before 1860 and lived the rest of their lives there. John Bird moved to Adair, Co., Mo., which was the neighboring county. John's son, Orthonile(Outchnille- both spellings are on his military pension record), died in the Civil War in his teens after being bushwacked by rebels. John and his wife, Polly, recieved Orthonile's pension. I have had that military record for years, but I was just waiting to tie it together. Then I found the correct counties in Indiana and Kentucky, and it now seems to fall into place. I don't know if Larkin had a middle name. I have sent for military records for both he and a Richard Bird, that fought in the Mexican War. Both were from Hendricks, Co., Ky. Waiting to see what I get. Brother or Son of Larkin??? Time will tell. Do you think we have a connection? Tell me about your Richard. Thanks for answering, Elsetta.

    3. I am looking information on a Francis Bird who was in Washington Co. VA in the mid to late 1700's. His daughter Mary Bird married Joseph Bounds before 1797. Joseph was the son of Jesse Bounds. Jesse and Francis are named together in various records of Washington Co. He died in 1844 from injuries he substained in the War with Mexico. He and his family lived in Hendricks Co, Indiana prior to the war. He lived in Estille Co, Kentucky in the cen. of 1840. He was born in Va. I would like to trace this line further back but I am stuck. I found a list of Soliders in the War, and noticed that a Richard also fought in the same company and also from Hendricks Co. I am assuming this is his brother. He also had a son Richard, but, think he was too young to fight in this battle. Can anyone tie into these lines? Thanks, Elsetta- torres@netport.com

    1. [BIRD-L] Wills, John & Thomas Bird, d. ca 1805 Rowan Co NC
    2. Fellow Bird Researchers: While researching another line in Rowan Co, I stumbled across two wills for Birds in Rowan Co. (below). I am one of at least three people on this list that are trying to sort out who the ancestors of the Thomas T. Byrd, John Byrd and other Byrds who ended up in Robertson Co TN late 1700s. We are also tracing Choate/Byrd connections Pittsylvania,Henry,Franklin, Augusta, Russell,Washington Cos VA, as well as Eastern TN. FYI, the family I was looking into was Chambers who ended up in Greene Co TN, where there are Byrds and Choates next door in Washington Co, among other counties there abouts. In the will of John Byrd the name Valendine stuck out because of Valentine Choate connections with these Byrds in VA and TN. Though not of the Birds in these wills, the name LARKIN Byrd in a recent post also stuck out because my ggg grandfather Powhatan Choate, b. 1804 Robertson Co TN (probably) named one of his sons Larkin. In Dade Co Missouri, one of his other sons and one of his daughters married Byrds, including a HENRY Bird, children of John Byrd and Nancy Couts of Robertson/Sumner cos....So I find the information below interesting. I am curious if any of you know who these Birds in the wills are. The first one is short, but the second one is an abstract said to take up three pages in a will book. The entire will might be able to make a connection between the two Birds or other families. I did not have time to follow up in any other Rowan County abstract books, etc. My best and I hope this helps someone out there in any event. Janet Hunter Will of Thomas Bird, Rowan County, North Carolina Will Book C, p. 325 Date of Probate not available In the name of God Amen: I Thomas Bird of Rowan County and State of N. I also will and bequeath unto my son WILLIAM five shillings and my daughter ELIZABETH five shillings & to my daughter MARY five shillings, & lastly I now constitute my beloved wife Ann Bird my executor of this my last will & test: In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th day of January 1803.
