also the GENCONNECT boards where you can post Queries, Bible records, Bio's,Deeds, Obits, Pensions and Wills. These boards are a great place to put those documents you have tucked away that are not your line. I have the BIRD and BURD boards on my webpage, the BYRD boards were adopted by someone else. That would be me, and I just wanted to add to Lisa's very informative letter that all the Gedconnect boards are archived also. Have a great one! Hello All! Gosh...seeing all these Byrds/Birds/Burds is wonderful! I know I've bumped up against so many of these names in my own research that I figure we must be related somehow, even tho I haven't found the link. My Byrds were in the Shenandoah Valley of VA from about 1700 until my adventuresome 3G-grandfather Adam headed west. He lived in Greene Co Ohio, JoDaviess Co IL, Missouri (haven't found much here), Richland Co WI, and then to the Washington Territory in 1852. We've been West-Coasters ever since. I have to be out of town a few days, but will post more when I get back. I have copies of the 1810-40 Federal Census for Shenandoah Co VA and I can post all the Bird/Byrd/Burd entries if that would help anyone out. For now, here's my line back to Adam! Adam BYRD, b 9 Oct 1796 Shenandoah Co, VA, d 26 Apr 1853 Steilacoom, Pierce Co, WA. Married Mary HOUCK b 28 APR 1797 in Rowan Co NC, d 20 Sep 1877 in Steilacoom, Pierce Co, WA. Daniel Houck BYRD, b 12 May 1827 in Sugar Creek Twp, Greene Co, OH, d 9 Aug 1875, Pilot Rock, Umatilla Co, OR. Married Maria ALEXANDER b 5 Feb 1833 in Grant Co, WI, d 28 APR 1917. Lewis Irwin BYRD, b 11 Feb 1874, Pilot Rock, Umatilla Co, OR, d 26 Sep 1953. Married Luella HUFFAKER, b 29 Mar 1877 in either IL or UT, died 13 May 1948. Loretta
Marcia, Don't assume that Calvin died before 1939 just because he is not listed in the SSDI. This only means that no payments were ever made under his name. Also, I want to let you know that you have to sometimes wade through the SSDI just like any other database. How did you perform the search? Did you put in every piece of info that you knew about him? Was is a simple search? Did you use just his name? I ask, because when I first tried finding my father in the SSDI, he did not appear. I had filled in every piece of info that I knew. Full name, where he died, when he died, and I got no hits at all. This was not possible. I collected SS under him because I was only 13 when he died, and I collected until I got married. I started minimizing the info. I took off the death place, then I took his residence. Still no hits. I took everything out and just searched on the surname (too many to search through). I added his first name back on, and finally found him. I knew he was there. What I'm saying is that sometimes less is more. sometimes, you don't have to or need to fill in every blank. Also, what we knew them by, may not be their legal or first name. Also, I just wanted you to know that, if he was old enough to pay into SS, you may still be able to get a copy of his application. Not every man or woman who paid into this, had payments made under them. He could have died at a time in his life where his children were grown (therefore, they would not collect benefits), he and/or surviving spouse were not quite old enough to collect their retirement benefits. Keep this in mind when searching the SSDI. It's also possible that he missed getting in on SS. I hope that this has been informative and helpful. happy hunting, Tina Hall

You have requested something to liven up the postings: This may help(get me banned). The many postings to various boards has convinced me that we may need more specific lists due to the high percentage of information not useful to a specific subscriber. Accordingly, I would like to explore the feasibility of making lists that would attract specific individuals with more similar interests. Any suggestions or additions would be appreciated. 1- Earlybirds- for those interested in the English Heraldry works. 2- Snowbirds- for those who have retired and moved south. 3- Blackbirds- for those interested in African American/Byrd connections. 4- looneybirds- for those a few twigs short of a nest. 5- dodobirds- for those prone to making dumb choices- May be combined with #4. 6- Redbirds- for those Birds in communist countries. Tom Byrd Atkinson- i will volunteer for 4/5.

What a great (and inspiring) idea! I've been researching the 1900 Franklin Cty., Iowa census and have found several BIRDS. Only one is from my family but thought I'd share everything I found. MY BIRDS are: Calvin Bird b. 1869 in Iowa. Lists parents as born in Ohio. Married Martha "Mattie" Burns in 1896. Children on census were Barton b. 1897 and Lance b. 1899. Other children, born later, were Gladys, Elaine, Russell and Calvin. Calvin and Mattie lived in Elgin, Illinois (Kane Cty.) most of their married life. Calvin must have passed away before 1939, as I find no reference to him on the S.S. Death Index. Mattie died in 1954. I would love to find some of their descendants as I have a few wonderful pictures I would like to pass on to them. Calvin and Mattie had BEAUTIFUL children! Other BIRDS on the census were: Matthew Bird b. 1840 in Canada. Parents born in England, wife Catherine. Charles Bird b. 1867 in Wisc., parents from Canada and England, wife Lillian, children Forest b. 1896 and Mable b. 1899 in Iowa. David Bird b. 1871 in Iowa, father b. in Wisc., mother in Indiana, wife Laurilla. Child Blanche b. 1893. William Bird b. 1838 in England, as was his wife Elizabeth. Children Irma b. 1869 and Margueritte b. 1880. Hope this is of some help to someone and if anyone out there knows any of my second, third or fourth cousins, tell them to get in touch! Thanks Marcia
