Can someone do a look-up for Sarah (Sallie) Bird/Byrd married a Jack or Jesse Coleman. She died 1850 ish Flat Creek, Bedford county, TN. She may have been born in VA. This Coleman family was a large family and had slaves. I some time think my family must have come from outer space. The family history I read was undocumented and was wrong according to family letters from the 1800's. I will go with a family letter over what was gleamed with out proof.--Alicia

In a message dated 10/13/99 8:11:33 AM EST, eebird@worldnet.att.net writes: << Robert Bird (born about 1802) sold out about 1850 & moved to DADF County Missouri. >> Hello Ed, I owe you a response regarding the above statement, which you have questioned in earlier emails and I apologize. As much as we descendants of John Byrd and Nancy Couts would love to be firmly attached to a Byrd family, if you a referring to the Robert Byrd in the 1850 Dade Co MO census, he was only 27, and born ca 1823. He was the son of John Byrd and Nancy Couts (about whom you know). The Jane in the census is his wife Jane Wilson. Below you will find the census references to both Robert and his mother Nancy (as you know John is not there and his whereabouts are not known, although he could be presumed to have passed away...I am trying to dig up some old files with information). There is alot more information on this couple's Byrd descendants, myself included (in many, many geographical places) at this website for the Couts Family Association. While John's birth is a mystery, he was in Robertson Co TN. Nancy Couts was born there. She was the daughter of John Couts and Leah STARK. The information was collected from a variety of sources, and has not been verified. My mother personally confirmed most of the 20th century information on the descendants of William Michael Marsh and Casselia Byrd (daughter of Henry & Lucinda). http://www.syix.com/bevans/barbara/barjohn.htm There is a larger Byrd File here: For some of John's possible siblings, assuming he is the son of Thomas T. Byrd. http://www.syix.com/bevans/barbara/bird.htm Here is the information from the Dade Co census. In Nancy's household, the "Huey" should be Henry (my ancestor). Henry and Nancy "Parolee" married CHOATE siblings: Lucinda Choate and Nicholas Houston Choate. They were children of Powhatan Choate and Winnie Haley/Hailey who it is believed were married in Robertson Co TN, where the children were born. I am a direct descendent of William Bird, born about 1792 in Tennessee County. He married Margaret Jernigan in Robertson County TN on February 8th, 1815 (William H Jernigan in Independence County Arkansas in 1872 attested to this marriage). William Bird served in the war of 1812 for John Bird, who was drafted. I don't know for sure who my William's father was but it is my guest he was grandson of William Byrd (died 1809 in Robertson County) and maybe son of William, some say born about 1776. Carroll County TN became a TN county in 1821. Carroll County Court records reflect that in Carroll County in 1823 John Bird, 1825 Robert Bird, 1828 William Bird, & 1836 Francis Bird were all there. William Bird died in Carroll County May 31, 1864, Robert Bird (born about 1802) sold out about 1850 & moved to DADF County Missouri. John is believed to have died about 1849 in Carroll County, Francis is believed to have died before 1840 in Carroll County. All these Birds were in the northern part of Carroll County at all early census. Can anyone help me with the relationship of these Birds or have information on them? Thank you for your consideration. Hi! I am a desendant of Larkin Bird and Nancy ? Larkin died in 1847. I was looking at the L.D.S. site and saw 2 listings (of course they may not be right!) Anyway there were two Larkins listed. One the son of John and Cynthia @ 1853 (of Tenn), and one the son of Joshua West (of Oklahoma and Alabama)@1909 Well, my Larkin had sons named both Joshua and John. Some of Larkin's kids lived in Mo.,Ia,Ind. etc They may very well be these two. Or at the very least very closely related.I would like to find decendents of these people

I found this on the "Longhunters List", does anyone know anything about it? Glenda >pp 42, Oct 20, 1789 : Walter CROCKETT, >ounty Lieutenant of Montgomery Co, reported to Gov. Beverly RANDOLPH, >"On the first of this instant, a party of Indians took one WILEY's >family, killed and scalped four of his children, and took his wife and >her youngest child prisoners".... The Benge that you are talking about is Robert Benge. He was a halfbreed Cherokee. His white father was indian trader John Benge of VA and NC and his mother was Wurteh of the Bird Clan. Robert, often called Capt. Bench, The Bench, Chief Benge, etc., was never a chief, but did lead several very small bands against white settlements. Apparently, he was white skinned, tall, red haired, and spoke excellent English. Although there are many raids attributed to Robert, this one is not attributed to him by members of the Benge research group. Stories are told that Jenny was given to an elderly Cherokee chief by the Shawnee. Robert Benge would have been in his late twenties in 1789, certainly not elderly. Cherokee Benge researchers assert that Robert was not the father of any of Jenny Wiley's children. I have a chronology of Robert Benge's activity at the Benge website at... http://www.users.mis.net/~chesnut/pages/benge.htm Don
Anyone missing a BIRD from you family tree? We have found a Susan Margaret BIRD b.abt 1825 Kentucky. She was married to my G G Grandfather Thomas COLLINS they were married in Andrew Co., MO in 1844. We would sure like to fine her family and put them into our Tree. Jo McBride djm@etex.net
My mother researched for many years her Bird family. I don't believe these Birds are related to me, but this may be of some help to someone else. I have a couple more letters like this which I'll try to put out on the list so they will be archived for other researchers. It is a letter she received in conjunction with her research and please note that it is over 30 years ago: ???? Goodview Street Lynchburg, Virginia February 23, 1964 Dear Mrs. Hurlbutt (my mother Lucile W. Hurlbutt), I am writing you in regard to your listing under the genealogy heading of "Name Your Hobby" in the March issue of Together magazine. I am very interested in the Bird family. I do not have very much information on the Bird family that I am related to however I would like to find out more about them. I can trace back to William Bird who was married October 28, 1823 and died November 1875. His children were: Andrew Bird; Peter Bird; Elizabeth Bird; Jacob Bird; F. J. Bird; James Bird. James Bird (wife Mary J.) was born March 17, 1827 and died Mar 1, 1864. Their children were: Uriah Bird (my great grandfather); B. Frank Bird; Martha E. Bird; Emma J. Bird, Bertie Permelia Bird. A few of these people were born in Virginia but most were born in West Virginia. If you can add any to my information I would greatly appreciate it and if you would like any more information of the Bird family that I have please let me know. I have enjoyed writing to you and hope you receive the information you are seeking. Sincerely, Mrs. W. F. Billingsley, Jr. Lynchburg, Virginia
Greetings, I am new to the list and am on again off again as I can't keep up with all my mail. It is nice to know that the archives can be searched at Rootsweb. This is the Bird line I am researching, and it is incomplete and may have some errors. If anyone else is researching this line, I would love to hear from them. To the best of my knowledge, no one has been able to find the parents of John Bird III in Virginia. FIRST GENERATION 1. John III BIRD was born on 4 Nov 1792 in Pendleton County, Virginia. Mother's notes. He died on 12 May 1869 in Trivoli, Peoria County, Illinois. He was Methodist. Tom Wilson, Boca Rato He was married to Margaret "Paggy" HAYS (daughter of Moses HAYS and Sarah? UNKNOWN) on 3 Mar 1814 in Pendleton County, Virginia. Search at Ancestry Hometown Margaret "Paggy" HAYS was born on 3 Apr 1793 in Augusta County, Virginia. She died on 19 Apr 1871 in Trivoli, Peoria County, Illinois. From Tom Wilson query on Peoria archived list. John III BIRD and Margaret "Paggy" HAYS had the following children: 2 i. Sally BIRD was born in 1814. 3 ii. Allen BIRD was born in 1816. +4 iii. Jacob BIRD. +5 iv. Nancy BIRD. 6 v. John BIRD was born in 1823. +7 vi. Ury BIRD. +8 vii. William BIRD. 9 viii. Harvey or Harry BIRD was born in 1828. +10 ix. Tabitha BIRD. +11 x. Jesse BIRD. SECOND GENERATION 4. Jacob BIRD was born about 1819 in Kentucky. Mother's notes. He died in 1881 in Chicago, Illinois. According to correspondence with Golda Lee Bird June 8, 1966 He was buried in Concord Church Cemetery, Trivoli, Peoria County, Illinis. He was a Farmer. Mary UNKNOWN was born in 1825 in Kentucky. Illinois 1850 census. My mother's data which appears to have been copied from the 1860 census for Peoria County Illinois shows Bird, Jacob b 1819 son of John and Pagy Bird (?) b Ky; Mary wife b 1825 b Ky; Sarah b 1841 b Ill; John b 1843 b Ill; and Mary (would be Mary Louise my gr grandmother) b 1845 (really 1844) b Ill. 1844 is no problem, but the discrepancy of Jacob's wife being Mary 'Polly' Lane, born 1825 in Kentucky (mother somehow thought Hardin County) rather than in 1812 (would make her 5 years older than Jacob) in Sumner County Tennessee is just too great. Some of this possibly misinformation may have been started by me in my eagerness to attach a surname to Jacob's wife Mary or my information may somehow be flawed, but it appears to have been picked up by different people and incorporated into their family trees. Jacob BIRD and Mary UNKNOWN had the following children: 12 i. Sarah BIRD was born about 1840. +13 ii. John BIRD. +14 iii. Mary Louise BIRD. 5. Nancy BIRD was born on 27 Jan 1821 in Hardin County, Kentucky. She was married to Johnson H. PROCTOR. Johnson H. PROCTOR was born in 1818 in White County, Illinois. She was married to Lemuel LANE about 1820 in Illinois. She was married to William C. WILSON on 3 Jul 1857 in Peoria County, Illinois. William C. WILSON was born about 1836 in Illinois. Nancy BIRD and William C. WILSON had the following children: 16 i. Nancy E. WILSON. 17 ii. Charles A. WILSON. 18 iii. Andrew W. WILSON. 19 iv. Marion M. WILSON. 20 v. Frances WILSON. 7.
