I have some Bird/Byrd's in my Hamilton's also. My ggrandpa Richard Bird/Byrd Hamilton oldest child of Joseph Hamilton, son of John, was born in Cabarrus Co., NC on Apr 15, 1793. He was married to Salina Bird/Byrd in burk Co., NC on June 10, 1831. They moved to McMinn Co., Tn., sometime prior to 1836 where seven of their nine children were born. Richard Bird b. Mar 20, 1832 at Old Fort, NC; John B. b. Jan 4, 1834 at Old Fort, NC; Joseph W. b. Jul 23, 1836, Englewood, Tn; James W. A. b. Jul 26, 1838; Englewood, Tn; Robert N. b. Dec 14, 1840; Englewood, Tn; Mary E b. Dec 10, 1844 Englewood; Albert L. b June 19, 1847 Englewood; Daniel W. b. Oct 3, 1849 Englewood, and Sarah Ann Hamilton b. Jun 21, 1852 at Englewood, Tn. Richard B. Hamilton is buried at Horntown Cemetery having died Dec 9, 1909 at Holdenville, Hughes Co., OK. His mother Salina Bird/Byrd (I have a picture of her) was buried near Englewood, Tn. Just wanted to add the above to your search for a possible link in your search. Thanks, Bye, Frank Mayberry in Muskogee, Oklahoma USA - Native America. "The Deane Family" NEHGR 3:4 (Oct 1849), p. 387 states that Zipporah Deane, wife of Benjamin Deane, was the daughter of John Deane who married Hannah Bird, 21 Sep 1699 in Taunton, Massachusetts. However, I cannot find any other children of this couple. (They have no children born in Taunton) Does anyone know where this family resided? Were there any other children? Is there a documented source for this family? Thank you. I will gladly share any info I have found. Hal Bradley
My grandfather had a cousin to visit him that had dogs that came from Dick Byrd's dogs he used in his adventures to the Arctic. Granddads grandmother was Sarah(Sallie) Bird/Byrd. She married Jack?( we have a n open debate on this gentleman's name) Coleman, they had 4 children John, William, a daughter and a son. John died in the war, I presume the Civil War, the daughter died in her teens from a spider bite and the other son drown. My great grandfather William S. Coleman b. 1848 so I think he was the youngest since Sallie died 1850. This family group livied in Flat Creek, Bedford CO, TN As for the two spellings of Byrd, I was always told it was Bird but changed as the family was more educated. This is an interesting family.--Alicia
Letter to my late mother. 2037 Holmes Avenue Springfield, Illinois February 20, 1964 Dear Mrs. Hurlbutt: I always read the Hobby Column in "Together", especially the genealogy group, for that is my hobby. I have just put into the hands of a professional typist the manuscript of a family history I have been working on for years, for the final typing. My great-grandmother Springer was before her first marriage in St. Clair County, Illinois, Elizabeth Byrd, or Bird, born May 1, 1802 in Tennessee. Seven or eight years ago I found the probate record of a John Byrd at Belleville, the county seat of St. Clair County, and the name was spelled Byrd sometimes and sometimes Bird, and I know that before the Revolution spelling did not mean much even in literate families. We were always told that we belonged to the Byrds of Henrico County, Virginia; and our old History of Madison County, Illinois, published in 1882, said she was a daughter of John Byrd, of Alabama. Following up on that, I wrote a letter to the Historical Society of Alabama, about fifteen yeas ago, and asked about him; and got back a rather sarcastic letter in reply, saying some of the Virginia Byrds did come to Alabama, but much later, about 1840; and there were practically no white people in Alabama as early as 1802. We were living in Springfield at that time, and I had met the director of the Archives Building, Ernest East. He got the original mortality census for 1849, when she died in the cholera epidemic, and brought it to me, and the regular census for the same year, 1850, which gave the state of their nativity, and it said plainly she was born in Tennessee, not Alabama, so if her father went to Alabama, it was after she was born. The census for 1850 was the first one that gave the native state, anywhere in the United States. So I wrote to Nashville. >From the Archives of Tennessee I found four grants of land in 1788, 1790 and 1792, to John Byrd (1788), John Bird (1790) and John Byrd (1792) all in Green County, and obviously the same man, but he died in Greene County, and when I sent for his probate record, there was an Elizabeth, all right, but not married to either George Biggs or John Springer. So I suspect that that John Byrd (Bird) may have been my Elizabeth's grand-father, for many of the early settlers of St. Clair and Madison Counties came from Tennessee and Kentucky. The County Seat of Madison County, formed in 1812, is Edwardsville; Madison was once a part of St. Clair County. Does any of this ring a bell with you? If so, I may be able to give you some material on your Bird line, or put you in touch with someone who can. I know that my Elizabeth had sisters, Nancy, born in 1806, and Mary, born in 1808, and a brother, William, who had died by 1850; and there may have been a brother John, age unknown, who married as his second wife, Mrs. Mary Kinney, and had two daughters, Louisa and Sarah, and a son Cornelius Byrd, as named in his father's will, and Neil, as named in his mother's. I am looking for information on Mary (Polly) Bird, born in Tennessee, in 1825. She had, it is believed, one sister, Bettie Bird Wilson, and two brothers, Albert and John. She married David Stillwater Gray 10 June 1842-41. They had seven children. she died 31 Dec. 1891. Enclosed is SASE . . . Sincerely, Mrs. Robert Granicy
Letter to my late mother, Lucile W. Hurlbutt, dated August 10, 1967: Dear Mrs. Hurlbutt, My son Sam is still unable to write as he has been kept in bed most of the time since wounded last January but he asks me to thank you for your throughtfulness. There seems to be no near relationship in our families. My father was born in cincinnati, Ohio. His father, Nicholas and Uncle Richard for whom he was named moved to Wichita, Kansas in the 1880's. My great Grandfather came to the States from Cork county, Ireland the town of Banby I believe. He had a brother that disappeared in the States and there could be a conection there. I am taking the liberty of sending your letter on to Gertrude Byrd Barnes, 730 W. Princess Anne Rd., Norfolk, Va 23517. she has studied the Bird & Byrd genealogy back a number of centuries and has been kind and thoughtful of Same. Thank you again for your kindness and good wishes, Sincerely, Richard E. Bird <can't find envelope it came in>

Searching for proof that Donnan Byrd is the son of George Byrd, Jr. and Sarah Frierson. He is listed in the Byrd Family History written by Robert E. Byrd, along with his siblings. Verification of this is needed for DAR papers for a friend who is descended from Donnan. Thank you, Carolyn B. Henderson, Sherrod Byrd Descendant
My fellow Byrd cousins: A woman on the Greene Co TN, who probably didn't realize what she was offering, offerred to do lookups in a relatively new Cemetery Book for Greene Co TN. So of course, I asked for Byrds (no Choates are there)... Here are the results. I don't recognize anyone, but I hope this helps someone out there. I recently ran across a few deeds from Mansfield Twp, Sussex/Warren Co, NJ, that link all these Birds together. It seems in 1818 Benjamin and Edward owed money to a Thomas Martin, so property in Mansfield Twp, then Sussex, now Warren Co, was auctioned off by the sherriff. After a few auctions and no buyers, Birtis Bird eventually bailed them out. Bitis later sold the land in 1833. There were other sales between the four. Here's my question - does anyone have any other info about these guys? They are probably all sons of Edward Bird of Beattystown (son of James Bird). I really want to know about Benjamin, because I have nothing else on him except a marriage date. Furman and Birtis moved to Michigan in the 1830's. I have him on the 1850 Census of Pendleton Co., KY but by 1860 he is not present. Eloisa in 1845 was born in INdiana and Francis in 1848 was born in KY and died there. I really am most interested in What happened to Arthur (George?) 11 in the 1850 census but not found in 1860 Census. He is believed to have been in the civil war possibly captured. Columbus 19 in 1860 served in the KY Calvary and was captured in TN and was discharged from Rock Island, IL in 1865 with consumption. I don't know if he made it to KY or not. ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Amond your Birds of TN, do you be any chance have an Elizabeth Bird whose parents moved to Indiana before 1837? Elizabeth married Thomas Blair then, and she positively had to have parents, and come from somewhere! The census says she was born in PA, but since Tom's parents came from TN, maybe Elizabeths's did too. I know it's a stretch, but I've been looking for many years. Sue
The Edward and Mary Ann (Jennings)Bird family arrived in Victoria, British Columbia about1895. Not sure which coast they arrived at first. I have for the most part figured out the part of the family that stayed here in British Columbia. In both Edward and Mary Ann's obit two sons are mentioned living in New York. George b abt. 1874 and Douglas b abt. 1871. Years ago when I asked my grandparents to tell all, I was told that one of my great grandmothers brothers was a famous (Opera??) singer in the early 1900's in Chicago. Could be either one. I have reason to believe one of them did travel back to Victoria about 1904 for a visit. Does this ring a bell with anybody?? Many thanks! Updated information: Still searching for help on my gggrandfather, William T. Bird, b. about 1845. He married Julia Sarah Hatton August 15, 1869 in Pope County, IL. They had two boys, ages 8 and 11, before William died at age 37 in 1882. Their mother had to post $100 bond Guardians Bond ( I guess so that she could keep them.) Didn't women have any rights in Illinois back then? The children were my ggrandfather, Walter W. Bird, b. November 23, 1873, and his older brother, Hal L. Bird, b. 1870, also of Pope County. Walter died in 1908 in Rose Bud, Pope County, IL, at the age of 35, leaving two young boys, himself. It seems that the male Bird side of my family tree usually didn't make it past the age of 40! I didn't include her birth around 1820, she died 2 years after my gr grandfather was born in 1848 in Flat Creek, Bedford CO, TN.---Alicia
