Hi List, Ive made contact finally after years or researching with GA family who had info on my gg grandfather. We had always been told his name was Nathaniel Hawthorne Bird from Troup Co., GA. His tombstone had date of birth as 3-1-1841. But census records all show he was born closer to 1845. He claimed he left Mountville, Troup Co, GA about 1872 with wife Lucy Pollard Bird and three sons Thomas Oswald, William Oscar and Charles M., leaving his large family of 8 brothers and 6 sisters. We had never found any proof of Hawthorne as middle name...all records were either Nat Bird or N.H. Bird. Quite happily I received a pkg three wks ago with Bird info from a gentleman in Macon, GA who had enclosed a letter from a lady researcher of twenty five years on Bird line. Her great grandfather was a brother to my Nathaniel. I found her name and phone number on search and gave her a call. What a surprise for us both as she has so much info on all the family. Biggest surprise for me was Nathaniel's middle name was Howell. You see his son William Oscar named his second son Howell Lee Bird, my grandfather!! She even had notes on Uncle Nat and his Pollard wife! I had found Nathaniel H. Bird son of James Madison Bird and Elitha "Tilithey" Roseline Oliver on 1850 Meriwether Co., GA census last year. They lived just over the Troup Co line. Four houses away lived Joseph Pollard and family with little Lucy who Nathaniel married. James Madison Bird was a son of Hiram Bird and Temperance Wheeless (Wheliss, Whealiss, Wheeliss) daughter of Hardy Wheeliss. Lady even sent me photos of Nathaniels brothers who look just like my great grandfather and grandfather. She even had a picture of Elitha Oliver's grandfather James Oliver. WOW. What a gold mine. I know have listing of siblings of Bird lines and some of Oliver line....so if anyone connects with this line please let me know, will gladly share... Good luck, Sherry

Bill and my fellow Bird researchers: I posted the following last year. It includes a will of a John Bird in Rowan Co NC, with son Valentine. My experience is that those fellows didn't really pay close attention to the NC/VA state line. My Choates, while seemingly based in Franklin and Henry Counties VA (and yes there are Valentine Choates, too, and they are with the Birds from Pittsylvania to Robertson Co TN) dipped down to NC and then went over to SW VA counties as well. So..for what it is worth her are the wills Janet Hunter (John Bird & Nancy Couts>Henry Bird & Lucinda Choate>Caselia Bird & Wm Michael Marsh>Lucy Bell Marsh & Charles Sexton, my grandparents) CNIDR Isearch-cgi 1.20.06 (File: 126) ========================================================================= Date: Sun, 15 Aug 1999 12:58:49 EDT From: <Janmim@aol.com> To: BIRD-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <7aee7309.24e84bc9@aol.com> Subject: [BIRD-L] Wills, John & Thomas Bird, d. ca 1805 Rowan Co NC Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Fellow Bird Researchers: While researching another line in Rowan Co, I stumbled across two wills for Birds in Rowan Co. (below). I am one of at least three people on this list that are trying to sort out who the ancestors of the Thomas T. Byrd, John Byrd and other Byrds who ended up in Robertson Co TN late 1700s. We are also tracing Choate/Byrd connections Pittsylvania,Henry,Franklin, Augusta, Russell,Washington Cos VA, as well as Eastern TN. FYI, the family I was looking into was Chambers who ended up in Greene Co TN, where there are Byrds and Choates next door in Washington Co, among other counties there abouts. In the will of John Byrd the name Valendine stuck out because of Valentine Choate connections with these Byrds in VA and TN. Though not of the Birds in these wills, the name LARKIN Byrd in a recent post also stuck out because my ggg grandfather Powhatan Choate, b. 1804 Robertson Co TN (probably) named one of his sons Larkin. In Dade Co Missouri, one of his other sons and one of his daughters married Byrds, including a HENRY Bird, children of John Byrd and Nancy Couts of Robertson/Sumner cos....So I find the information below interesting. I am curious if any of you know who these Birds in the wills are. The first one is short, but the second one is an abstract said to take up three pages in a will book. The entire will might be able to make a connection between the two Birds or other families. I did not have time to follow up in any other Rowan County abstract books, etc. My best and I hope this helps someone out there in any event. I've included a few notes below on this John BIRD. Note that in 1784 he was counted on the census record as a neighboring Head of Household to Mounce BIRD and Mounce's son Abraham in Shenandoah Co., VA. This makes me think that he might have been a brother to Mounce Bird. I've never been able to find "proof positive" that he was the son of Lt. Andrew Bird and Magdalene Jones; but I have much in the way of circumstantial evidence leading to that conclusion. We have communicated before, and I think that if anyone can help prove or disprove this, you can. I have more extensive notes that I can send you; but they were compiled many years ago as a means to record all of my sources, EVERYTHING I found, right or wrong, so they are kind of a "hodge-podge" Here are a few entries that might help. Byrd, sheriff of Dale county, was born in Dale Co., Al., 22 November 1855. he is a son of Curtis and Elizabeth (Harper) Byrd, the former of whom was born in North Carolina 20 June 1813. In 1828 he moved with his parents to Alabama, by wagon, and settled one mile east of where Ozark is now situated. Here a farm was entered, cleared and cultivated, the family living in part, and sometimes in large part, upon game shot or caught in the woods, such as bear, deer, etc. Curtis Byrd was a slave holder in a small way, freeing eleven slaves at the close of the war. Early in life he united with the Missionary Baptist church, of which he is still a member. He finds a comfortable home with his son Angus B. His wife was a native of Georgia, where she grew to womanhood. She was a daughter of Judge Harper, who was at one time judge of probate of Dale county. she was married in he twentieth year, and was the mother of fourteen children, eight of whom reached maturity and six of whom still survive. Early in life she united with the Missionary Baptist church and remained a consistent member thereof until her death, which occurred 23 October 1889. Angus B. Byrd grew up on the farm, and received a somewhat limited education. Upon arriving at manhood he engaged in farming, and has continued in that occupation ever since. he was married in his nineteenth year to Miss Callie Chalker, daughter of William and Rebecca Chalker, the former of whom moved to Russell county A., settling near the river, and a few years later moving near the town of Ozark, where he has lived ever since. Mrs. Chalker was also a native of Georgia, was married in that state when in her eighteenth year, and was the mother of fourteen children, twelve of whom still survive. She is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, south. Mrs. Byrd was born in Dale county, and there grew to womanhood. her educational advantages were the best the country afforded at the time. She married in 1875, in her nineteenth year, and has two children. viz.: Alberta, born 30 August 1877 and Mary Emma born 17 December 1878. she united with the Methodist Episcopal church, south, while yet young, and has ever since been a consistent member of that church. In 1888 Mr. Angus B. Byrd was elected sheriff of Dale county, which office he has filled ever since, to the general satisfaction of the public. He has always taken an active interest in the advancement of home industries, contributing liberally to the support of church and school, and assisting to secure the building of the railroad through this place. In 1891 he was elected to a membership in the municipal board, without any solicitation on his part, and without opposition, and his sentiments are such with reference to internal economy that he must naturally be found on the side of progress. ==== ALDALE Mailing List ==== How long has it been since you checked your records. Byrd.- This native born and enterprising merchant and farmer of Dale county Al. was born at Newton, 18 September 1840, and is a son of Burtis and Mary (Anderson) Byrd. Burtis Byrd was a native of North Carolina, born in 1814, but in 1830 came to Alabama, and located in Dale county, near the present town of Newton, began farming and married. Shortly afterward he moved to Barbour county to avoid the depredations of troublesome Indians. When the Indians had been removed to the west of the Mississippi river he returned to Dale county, and erected the first business building in Newton, and in company with R. Yelverton laid a stock of general merchandise. He then, in order to facilitate trade, put in circulation a petition for the building of a bridge over the Choctawhatchee river, but the settlers were slow to subscribe to the scheme, when Mr. Byrd constructed the bridge at his own expense, and demanded a toll for passengers until the enterprise had paid for itself, when the gates were torn down and the bridge made free. In 1848, Mr. Byrd moved to Honeytown, near the present town of Ozark, and bought a farm. He was elected sheriff of Dale county three times on the democratic ticket, and was the incumbent of that office at the time of his death, which occurred in 1852. Mrs. Mary (Anderson) Byrd was born in South Carolina, in 1816, came to Alabama with her parents, in 1820, and was married in Dale county, in her seventeenth year. Of her ten children, seven grew to maturity, and six still survive. She, like her husband, was a devout member of the Missionary Baptist church, in which faith she died, in 1889, in her seventy-third year. Her father erected the first frame and painted house in Dale county, the lumber for which was cut with a whipsaw; he also erected the first mill in the county. Thomas A. Byrd was reared on the home farm, and secured a sound general education. At the age of twenty he enlisted in the Confederate army, 23 April 1861, in the seventh Alabama Infantry, which was assigned to Gen. Bragg's army. At the end of his term of enlistment for one year, he returned to his home, and enlisted in the fifty-third Alabama cavalry, under Col. Hannan, and took part in all it's marches and engagements until the battle of noonday creek, when he was shot through the ankle with a rifle ball. Returning home, he worked the first year after his recovery on his mother's plantation, and then went to Crenshaw county, where he lived two years on a farm. Returning to Dale county in 1869, he bought a tract of 120 acres, to which he has added from time to time, and now owns and cultivates a tract of 520 acres. In 1891, in company with his son, Edward R., he opened a general store in Daleville, in which the transactions amount to $20,000 or $30,000 per annum. The marriage of Mr. Byrd took place 19 October 1865, to miss Catherine Mullins, daughter of Lewis and Catherine Mullins. The lady was born in Dale county, in 1845, and she is now the happy mother of twelve children, born in the following order: Fannie E., wife of J. Ellis, of Coffee county, Al.; Benjamin B., who married Miss Ella Stephens, and who also resides in coffee county; Edward R. in partnership with his father; Mary E.; Hattie B.; Mattie; Cora O.; Georgia; Edward L.; Wilhelmite; Dovey, and Tommie (a baby girl). Mr. and Mrs. Byrd and four of the adult members of their family are members of the Missionary Baptist church. In 1871, Mr. Byrd was made a Mason, and now affiliates with Dadeville lodge. No 144. While he has never been an aspirant for public office he was nevertheless elected by the democrats, in 1889, to the office of county commissioner, which position he filled one term with credit to himself and satisfaction to the citizens. He is public spirited and progressive, and his business reputation without a blemish. ==== ALDALE Mailing List ==== 750,000 men from the South faced 2 million men from the North . 2 million men could not defeat 750,000 Southern troops what did defeat them was disease, hunger, lack of money and supplies. >>

Looking for any info on James Madison Bird (son of Hiram) and wife Elitha Oliver. I would really like to know where they maybe buried. I have recently received info that they had 13 children. Does anyone have all the names?? Son, Nathaniel is my gggrandfather. His middle name began with a H. possible Howell. Some in family thought maybe Hawthorne but that is proving incorrect. Nathaniel left GA for Rusk Co., TX in 1872 with wife Lucy Pollard and 3 young sons, William, Thomas and Charles. Appreciate any help or leads. Sherry Douglas in TX

I've been searching for the family of Fred Bird. All I know: Met & md my gAunt (Myra Sutherland, b 1882 in Teheran, Persia (Iran) about 1915. Fred was a professor at American U., Teheran. They had daughter, Jean, b abt 1917 in Iran. Family returned to US just before US entered war, 1918. They were divorced, but don't know when. Fred was a Sociology Professor at Columbia University. Jean married Marc(k) Abrams who was a newspaper person in England, according to family lore. Sure need help! Thanks.
Would the person who sent me information on the William Bird/Byrd who married Bridget Huling please contact me? Or anyone with knowledge of the children of this marriage. Thanks. Glenda
List, I am searching for the parents of Launa Victoria Bird born Dec. 18, 1851, probably in Blount Co., TN. I am almost sure that she is in the Jacob Bird line from all the posts in the Bird-L archived queries but have not been able to locate specific information. Would there be anyone researching this line enough to give me an idea of her ancestry?? Joe Payne
