    3. Hi Anne His second marriage certificate should state his 'condition'. One would expect it to say 'widower', unless you've stumbled on something more interesting! Assuming all is in order, I'd be looking for the death of Ellen between 1861 and 1867. Do you have a geographical 'fix' on him via the 1861 and 1871 censuses? Any children of the first marriage? When and where was William born?
