    3. Hey Greg, I'll look forward to seeing it soon. I checked out your COBBERS website. Wow, it looks like the same type of political mess exists in Australia as it does in the US... Well, this part is off topic, so I'll stop. At least, I get the gist now of what a "Cobber" is. Thanks. --Carol (Huffington) Menges ----- Original Message ----- From: "Greg Baldwin" <kennethb@melbpc.org.au> To: <BIRCH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, August 25, 2005 7:12 AM Subject: BIRCH Genealogy > G'day Cobbers, > > Just thought I'd let you know that I've just added some BIRCH information to > my homepage. > > Homepage: http://member.melbpc.org.au/~kennethb/ > > > Regards > > Greg Baldwin > Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia > Homepage: http://member.melbpc.org.au/~kennethb/ > Email: kennethb@melbpc.org.au > All incoming & outgoing files & emails checked by VET Anti-Virus software. >

    3. Hey Greg! Pardon my ignorance but I'm a mere Yank. Please educate me: what's a "Cobber"? I'm sure I've heard the term but can't remember it's definition lately. I'm still working my way through John William BIRCH's book, having just finished transcribing parts of Chapter 13. I have the rest to go except for #19 which I'd done first off. I'm Cc:ing this message to one of my husband's 17th BIRCH cousins (who contacted us just recently) because he cannot get a copy of John's book (they're sold out) and he may be interested in this list, I don't know. He's a nice guy and is working on his genealogy in the Seattle area. I see that you have BRUCEs as well in your maternal line. BIRCHs are my husband's maternal line. CARLISLE--a sept of BRUCE--is one of my paternal ones through King Robert's sister's husband. So you and I are probably distant cousins of one sort or another, as well as in-laws. Oh yes, I have paternal CLARK(e)s too, but have only tracked them as far back as into Colonial America, to their Quaker roots. I'll enjoy looking at your website more into the coming months. Take care, and thanks so much for putting us in touch originally with John William and his book! --Carol & Jay (Huffington > Carlisle > eventually to Clarke) Menges ----- Original Message ----- From: "Greg Baldwin" <kennethb@melbpc.org.au> To: <BIRCH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 17, 2005 2:09 AM Subject: Surname Interests > G'day Cobbers, > > Please have a look at my homepage to see my research interests: > > http://member.melbpc.org.au/~kennethb/ > > > Regards > > Greg Baldwin > Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia > Homepage: http://member.melbpc.org.au/~kennethb/ > Email: kennethb@melbpc.org.au > All incoming & outgoing files & emails checked by VET Anti-Virus software. > AIGS 9842 > A&NESFHS 9933 > KFHS 7736 >

    1. Birches from Garforth, near Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire
    2. Joyce's Mail
    3. Hello Listers, I am new to the list, though not new to family history research. I am currently researching a BIRCH family from Garforth and surrounding areas such as Barwick in Elmet, and Swillington. My current tree starts with a Thomas Birch born in Arncliffe in 1820. One of his sons George Birch, born 1849 in Parlington, near Garforth married my ggggrandmother Alice Ellen Smith, though not before she had produced my Gggrandfather Edward Smith. They produced 11 Birch children in and around the Garforth area and were a well known couple in the town - he being a coal miner and game keeper at nearby Barrowby Hall. When they celebrated their Golden wedding in 1921 a series of photographs were taking showing different groupings of the family members and it has been fun contacting the surviving relatives and fitting together which person was which in the photo. I'd be very interested to hear from any other Birch descendents who might have further copies of this series of photographs and perhaps know about some of the other lines that descend from the family, or from anyone else researching either George's descendents or other descendents of Thomas and Sarah (nee Goodhall) who were his parents. 1. BIRCH, Allen D., Martin Jackson, and William
    2. I have recently found the following 3 generations of BIRCH men: Allen D. BIRCH, b. 1865 in Ohio; d. abt 1931 in Topeka, Kansas, married to Clara Van Scoyk. These are the parents of my grandmother, Lenore Velma Birch COMBS and her siblings, Opal Birch ENTRIKEN, Van Lloyd BIRCH, and Vreda Birch RIGBY. Allen D. BIRCH was the son of Martin Jackson BIRCH, b. Oct. 17, 1824 in Ohio. Martin Jackson BIRCH was married first to Christina BAIN, and they were parents of George Mills, Sandy Clark, David, and Sarepta BIRCH, all born in Marion County, Ohio between 1848 and 1854. Martin Jackson BIRCH's second wife was Octava WASHBORN, and they were the parents of William, Mattie, Allen D., Ella May, Miriam, Ida Bell, and Anna BIRCH, all born in Ohio between 1860 and 1874. This family then moved from Ohio to Jewell County, Kansas in March, 1878. Martin Jackson BIRCH was the son of William BIRCH, b. abt 1789 in North Carolina. William moved his young family from somewhere (as yet unknown to me) to Montgomery Township, Marion County, Ohio in February, 1835. This pioneering BIRCH family was only the ninth family to settle in this tiny new town in the uncleared woods. I hope this info connects with, or fills in some gaps for, someone else "out there." These are my ancestors, so I have more information on some of them, which I will gladly share. Can anyone tell me more about William? Where in North Carolina was he born? Who were his parents? What was his wife's name? Were there other children besides Martin Jackson BIRCH? Help! Thanks, cousins. Lyn Griffiths

    3. Greg, I am researching the Birch family but my line is for Elizabeth Birch who married Jacob Reynolds in the USA. Sorry I don't know the date but I do know that Jacob Reynolds died in 1900 in Fulton or Mason County, Illinois, USA. I am also researching the Whitehouse family from England. Would be John Wilhelm Whitehouse who married Rosannah Robinson. Again not sure of the date but John died 1880 in Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois. He is buried at Pleasant View Cemetery. With this little information do think there is a chance we can connect? Sure hope so. Have a nice day. 1. EARLY LAWS OF MISSOURI. Names included: CARSTARPHEN, DALE, BOWLIN, BOLTON, BURTON, GARNER, McALEXANDER, VALLE, DEGIER, DeKELLIGAR, BIRCH, MOBERLY, KENELY, HAMILTON, MARCUM
    2. jomorgan
    3. This is a compilation of early Missouri laws picked at random. It is surprising how many of these laws apply to the study of genealogy. Over the years the Missouri legislature passed many laws affecting individuals directly. For instance, it could be that one of your ancestors had a name changed by law, or perhaps someone in your family did some work for the state which required a special law for him to get paid. All of these early laws, which are indexed after a fasion, may be seen at the Supreme Court Library in Jefferson City. An ACT, to dissolve the bonds of matrimony existing between Joseph HAMILTON and Rebecca HAMILTON, his wife. Whereas, Joseph Hamilton, of the county of Ripley, in this state, has petitioned this General Assembly to have the bonds of matrimony contracted with his wife, Rebecca Hamilton, late Rebecca MARCUM, dissolved, and whereas it appears to the satisfaction of this General Assembly that the facts set forth in said petition and documents accompanying the same are sufficient to entitle the said Joseph to the relief for which he prays: Therefore, be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri as follows: 1. That the bonds of matrimony heretofore contracted between Joseph Hamilton and Rebecca Hamilton, late Rebecca Marcum, his wife, be and the same is hereby dissolved. This act to take effect and be in force from and after its passage. Approved Jan 31, 1837 An act to divorce JOAB MOBERLY and SALLY, his wife. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri as follows: 1. The bonds of matrimony heretofore contracted between the said Joab Moberly and the said Sally KENELY, be and the same is hereby dissolved. This act to be in force from after its passage. Approved Feb 6, 1837. An ACT for the relief of James H. BIRCH. Whereas, it is represented to this general Assembly, that James H. Birch did furnish, at the request of the Secretary of State, for the use of the State, about one hundred sixty copies of the journals of the two houses of the General Assembly, of the session of '30 and '31, and has never received any compensation for said copies; and whereas, said Birch did expend $20 in transportating a number of copies of said Journals to St. Louis, for which he has never been remunerated: Therefore, be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Missouri as follows: 1. That the Auditor of Public Accounts be required to draw his warrant on the Treasurer for the sum of ninety-seven dollars, in favor of James H. Birch, and that the Treasurer be required to pay the same out of any money in the treasury not otherwise approprited. This act to be in force from its passage. Approved, Jan 14, 1837 An Act to change the names of certain children herein named, and for other purposes. Whereas, it is represented that FRANCOIS VALLE, of Madison County has three illegetimate children by NANCY DeKELLIGAR, otherwise the three youngest children of Nancy Degier, to wit: FRANCOIS DEGIER, JOHN B. DEGIER AND LEWIS DEGIER; and whereas, the said FRANCOIS VALLE, is desirous that the names of the said three dhildren shall be changed to the names of Francois Valle, John Baptist Valle and Lewis Valle; and that said children shall be declared the ligitimate heirs of the said Francois Valle, and capable in law of inheriting as such; Therefore, be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows: 1. That the names of the said three children of said Francois Valle, to wit: Francis Degier, John B. Degier, and Lewis Degier, otherwise the three youngest children of Nancy Degier, shall be, and the same are hereby changed and altered, and shall be known and called hereafter by the name of Francois Valle, John Baptist Valle, and Lewis Valle. 2. The said Francois Valle, John Baptist Valle, and Lewis Valle, be and they are hereby declared to be legitimate children to all entents and purposes, in every respect as though the said children had been begotten in lawful wedlock, and that said several children shall be able in all respects to inherit all the rights and privileges in law and equity of the said Francois Valle, as other legitimate children could or would do; anything in any law to the contrary notwithstanding. This act to take effect from and after its passage. Approved, Dec 12, 1836 (I don't know why they call the mother DeKelligar and then Degier, unless the first is just a typo.) An ACT for the relief of E. McALEXANDER, late sheriff of Saline county. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Missouri as follows: 1. That the auditor of Public Accounts be, and he is hereby authorized to draw his warrant on the treasurer, in favor of E. McALEXANDER, for the sum of two hundred and seventy dollars and eighty-seven cents, to be paid out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after the passage thereof. Approved Dec 23, 1836 An ACT for the relief of Moses BURTON and Jesse W. GARNER. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows: 1. The sum of two hundred and seventy dollars is hereby appropriated out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated in favor of Moses Burton and Jesse W. Garner, in addition to the amount agreed to be given said Burton and Garner, as contractors for the carpenter's work on the penitentiary. 2. This appropriation shall be in full of the claim of said Burton and Garner, as set forth in their petition on the 16th day of February, 1835, for the loss of time complained of by reasons of the non-compliance of the stone masons. Approved, Feb. 2, 1837 An ACT to refund money to Lewis BOLTON. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Missouri, as follows: 1. The auditor of Public Accounts is hereby required to draw his warrant on the State Treasurer in favor of Lewis Bolton, for the sum of one hundred and ninety-eight dollars and six cents, and that the Treasurer pay the same out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated. This act to be in force from its passabe. Approved Feb 6, 1837 An ACT, providing for the pay of James B. BOWLIN. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows: 1. That the sum of fifty dollars is hereby allowed the said James B. Bowlin, for the services in the above preamble mentioned, to be paid out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated. This act shall be in force from and after its passage. Approved Dec 12, 1836 An ACT, appropriating money for the pay of Librarian, for a part of the years 1834 and 1835. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows: 1. The sum of fifty dollars is hereby appropriated, out of any money in the treasury unappropriated, to pay George C. 1. Birch of Scioto County, Ohio
    2. Joan L. Asche
    3. My ancestor William Birch was born in Scioto County, Ohio in 1888 according to the 1900 Census. At this time he was living with his widowed Grandmother, Margaret Dutiel. I recently came across a marriage license notice in a Portsmouth, Ohio (Scioto County) newspaper dated 1887 for Sylvester Birch and Mary Dutiel. I believe these people may be the parents of my ancestor William Birch who was born in July, 1888. In census records for 1880 Sylvester was not living to far from the Dutiel household however there is no Mary Dutiel but three Dutiel daughters with the middle initial "M." I would dearly love to hear from anyone with a connection to this family. Thanks, Joan A.
