My maternal grandfather JAMES WILLIAM BIRCH was born on 4 Apr 1879 at Deptford on Thames, England. His father was JAMES BIRCH (labourer) - born 23 Dec 1852, at Loampit Hill, Lewisham UK. His mother was EMMA JANE PECK MONK BIRCH. EMMA JANE was possibly dead before James' 10th birthday. His widowed father remarried. The name of James' stepmother is uncertain. James had an older sister, JESSIE CATHERINE BIRCH (later MONTAGUE). His younger sister (3 years his junior) was HARRIET BIRCH. JAMES and HARRIET were British Home Children and were exiled to Canada in March 1890. JESSIE CATHERINE remained in Britain. Their father and stepmother were both alive and well at the time of the exile of JAMES and HARRIET. I find that most Birch's on genealogy pages come from the north of England. Ken: I know of Birch blood which exists just on the Manitoba side of the US border. The area is Turtle Mountain. The people in question are descendants of Harriet (Hattie) Birch, a Barnardo Home Child. She and her older brother James (my maternal grandfather) arrived in Halifax in 1891, on James's 12th birthday. James was assigned to farmers in the Ottawa Valley; Hattie was sent to a rather good family situation in south Manitoba. She was later to marry a farmer named Robert Cummings and become the ancestor of many. My grandfather, James William Birch was born at Deptford-on-Thames, England on 4 April, 1879. Searching for relatives/descendants of a Colonel Birch/Burch/Berch who served in WWI and lived in Memphis, Shelby Co., TN in the 1920's. Colonel was Birch'es given name. He served in the war with my father, Willie Miller Hudson in France. Birch'es wife visited my father, mother Velva Mae and family in Blytheville, MS. Co., AR in the late 1920's and borrowed a scrapbook of military photos, etc. which was never returned. My sister Frencella recalls the visit and the scrapbook.
