Hello Den, Do you have any connection to my Birch family? Hannah & Joseph were married 1797 at Henbury. Their son Henry was bap. 1801 at Chester and he married Anne Penelope Kennerley. He traded in Huddersfield between 1824 and 1844. Anne and family lived in London from 1844. Their son Hubert arrived in Australia in 1852. I look forward to hearing if there is a connection. Hi List, Having viewed the BIRCH Family Trees online before posting this, I am hoping for some verified information in regards to Caroline’s actual birth record. Caroline married in the Protestant Church, Elizabeth Street Sydney NSW in 1859 to William who was born in Devon UK as William BEWLEY but their marriage record and some children’s births have their name as BULLEY. She had 10 children but 9 of those birth records say her birthplace was Tasmania, and for the 10th one it is stated as Ireland. Descendants claimed that apparently one of her daughters said that Caroline’s accent was very broad, and it was difficult to understand her (so possible she was Irish?). Caroline died in May 1915 at Cowra NSW as confirmed by the death notice found on Trove newspapers for Mrs.Caroline Agnes BEWLEY dated 4 June 1915. I have searched Tasmania’s online records including Convict and Birth records etc. We all know that Death Certificates can be misleading for age but the Obituary notice states she was born in Tasmania in 1842 and spent 66 years in NSW. The “Sydney Morning Herald” newspaper article found on Trove dated 29 September 1854 titled “LOST CHILD” speaks of Caroline BIRCH aged 13 years usually called RYAN, missing since 26 September 1854. No follow up notice found of finding her. I know that Irish civil registrations did not commence until 1864. Can anyone produce evidence of where Caroline Agnes BIRCH (possibly RYAN) was born please? Many thanks for any assistance with my query. Michele in Sydney Australia

Hi List, This came through this afternoon. Cheers Anne Thought you all might be interested in this email from another list .. regards Maree Larsen Hobart Subject: [AUS-NSW] Flood damaged family history? conservation advice Hi listers The State Library of Queensland is temporarily closed to the public as a result of the flood, but have posted advice online for those who might have documents photos etc which have been water damaged ... 6 January 2011 Flood victims urged to put documents on ice Flood victims worried about what to do with precious mementos damaged by floodwaters should look to the power of the family freezer to help keep their keepsakes. The State Library of Queensland is urging the state's flood affected residents and business owners to take some simple steps before throwing out damaged photographs, books, papers, videos and cassette tapes. State Library Manager of Collection Preservation Grant Collins said the key to salvaging as many items as possible is "don't panic" and start with the most valuable. "It can be an emotional time, and people may throw out cherished and irreplaceable possessions damaged by water," Mr Collins said. "However, in some cases they can be saved by washing mud and silt off with clean water, and careful drying." A Salvaging Water Damaged Collections fact sheet offers simple, home based solutions for preserving books, documents, photographs, films, tapes, and digital media. "In many cases all you'll need is a kitchen table, pedestal fan, some absorbent paper, a clothesline and following the basic process in the fact sheet," Mr Collins said. "It's important to prioritise based on deterioration time. We recommend people start with photographs and film, and move on to any paper documents and digital media." "Wet paper can be held over for recovery just by popping it into a freezer, in a plastic bag, within 48 hours. Freezing is the best way to buy time as it reduces the risk of mould outbreak," he said. "If no electricity is available, you may have to reassess your priorities based on the documents you feel most attached to." "The key to recovering most of these documents is to get them dry as quickly as possible." Tips for drying include pegging film and paper on an internal clothesline, using pedestal fans, lying loose papers flat on paper towel, and separating pages of books, and magazines. Advice on how to rescue water damaged collections can be found on the State Library of Queensland's Preservation webpage www.slq.qld.gov.au/services/pres/advice. Badly damaged precious items may require professional conservation treatment. The Collection Preservation staff offer advice to organisations and community members, they can be contacted by email conservation@slq.qld.gov.au.
